Quote from: Ryan Scott (Hoops Fan) on March 26, 2024, 10:05:10 AMI suspect annually entering the portal will be pretty routine for the top players in the division going forward.  Nothing wrong with checking out the offers available and it gives them leverage at their current school.

What kind of leverage?

There is and will be NIL money in d3, probably increasing going forward.  It won't be in the millions like D1 stars get, but if a college kid can get 5 or 10k to keep playing some place, they're going to try, right?

The other thing is hires and budgets - some star might enter the portal to get more say in the next coach, if there's a change - or negotiate for better accommodations on the road.  I'm not saying it's good or beneficial, but players are definitely going to take advantage of their positions.

If the Dartmouth case goes through, even d3 teams will be able to unionize and bargain, if they so choose - because that's entirely unrelated to athletic scholarships.

The recruiting battles are going to continue right through their playing years going forward.  Players will get what they can get and the portal is definitely leverage.

What the actual numbers might be is interesting, but I haven't gotten that far yet in any conversation.  Like I said, it's all been rumors, but all involving players schools are very interested in keeping and schools that have alumni and fan support at the level where it's believable.  It could just be rumor - a lot of that happens this time of year, as recruiting heats up - but it's not unthinkable.

I do know of at least one d3 star getting $200 a month from a local business - but that's unrelated to keeping them in school - just a way the alumni owner is supporting the student and getting some publicity for the business.

In the 90s there were thousands of dollars going into "leadership scholarships" that schools were funneling to athletes.  The NCAA did a good job of getting rid of that kind of thing, but I'm sure the desire to essentially do the same thing still exists.

If an NIL collective can give two or three or five thousand dollars to a kid to help with school and get or keep them there, why not?  You won't be stealing recruits from d1 that way, but you might persuade a kid who was going to walk on somewhere to come your direction.

If a star is looking to take a half scholarship at a D2, you might be able to make up the difference through NIL.

A lot is possible, but only time will tell how it works out.

Definitely hearing rumblings from some of the bigger d3 programs that they're putting together NIL money to keep top players from leaving.  Nothing confirmed, but it wouldn't be surprising either.  I wonder if there's some measure of leverage here.  We might see the best players routinely entering the portal just to get the best deal from their current school.

Davidson Hubbard heads to the Portal.

From the way that post is worded, it looks like there's a chance he'll come back if the right opportunity doesn't present itself.

Last time the Bilas was a straight tourney, so it was winners vs winners - they can always change that if they want specific matchups, I guess.

Quote from: Greek Tragedy on March 22, 2024, 08:59:54 PMSo, I finally listened to Coach Dernbach's radio interview, I believe the last of this season, back on March 4. He was talking about the schedule and claimed it was finished. However, "when you win a few games" sometimes teams back out, so the schedule isn't complete yet.

Something that was noted is a tournament in North Carolina the weekend before Christmas where participating teams will include "a team that has won a National Championship in the last 5 years, a team that has won a National Championship in the last 3 years, a team that has played in the National Title game in the last two years and the Pointers..." Coach Dernbach is claiming it's going to be the best D3 tournament in the country in a really long time.

Two years ago Elmhurst played in a Jay Bilas sponsored tournament in NC the weekend before Christmas - it was largely coaches that've helped run the Jay Bilas camps there.  I wouldn't be surprised to see Elmhurst, RMC, and NWU there alongside UWSP - but I'm entirely speculating.  Merkel and Wellman used to work together, so that would fit all the criteria Dernbach mentioned above.

Quote from: KnightSlappy on March 16, 2024, 11:18:41 PMThe rumor I heard this weekend was that Megnanglo would be coming back to Trine.

It's been confirmed that Megnanglo will be returning for a 5th year.  That is great news!  I have also heard that Cam Awls will probably be coming back as well.  That means we'll be only losing 2 players from the championship roster for the 24-25 season, Cortez Garland and Brent Cox.

It's going to be another dogfight in the MIAA next season between Calvin, Hope and Trine.  I think both Olivet and Adrian will be much better too.

That was the assumption around Fort Wayne last week - just losing those two for next season. Also heard some very unconfirmed rumors of a transfer or two coming in - but that's pretty typical for a title team (the rumors, that is).

They couldn't really buy a basket in the first half either, they were just better at limiting Trine's looks.

Just looking down the list of indoor arenas with decent geography that aren't too old, in the capacity range we want:

There's an 18 year old hockey arena in Bloomington, Illinois that seats 6-7k.  I'm sure Bob would love that!

There's a 16 year old 5900 seat hockey arena in Youngstown, OH.

Austin Peay has a brand new 5500 seat arena in Clarksville, TN - that might be a little too far south, but not terrible.

There's a 4700 seat arena in Leesburg, VA, right near Dulles airport.  Not drivable for a lot of the country, but easy access for flights.

I guess if you're going that way, the new arena where the Washington Mystics and the DC G-League team play is only a few years old, in DC, and seats like 4200.  But that's probably as small as you want to go.  Oshkosh's 3500 seat G-League arena might sell out too quickly if a WIAC team were involved.

The Bulls G-League arena seats like 8000, but that would be convenient for a lot of schools.

I still think the coolest place we could do it is the Palestra in Philadelphia.  It seats 8000, but it doesn't feel that big.  Super historic, the seats are close to the court.  Parking might be an issue, but anyone staying in town could take public transit no problem and there are parking lots, I'm just not sure how affordable they'd be.

Greek, just a heads up.  Playing in the All-Star game no longer forfeits eligibility, but the coaches still ask if the players plan to play again - if the answer is yes, they don't invite them.  Mbangue may indeed play next year, but right now, it's unlikely.

Hope went from 91 points to 62.  That means the average voter moved one more team ahead of them than they dropped below them.  Not a huge movement, especially with four teams below them who made the second weekend.

Coe is the only team who passed them who didn't perform better.

Multi-Regional Topics / Re: Conference changes

Lots of rumors floating around Fort Wayne about conference changes upcoming - I suspect we'll see shuffling over the summer, even if those moves don't take place until after 24-25.
