mu pulls out a late win against apprentice today, 24-20...to be honest, they didn't look great on either side of the ball - offense struggled to move it at times, and the defense gave up too many big plays...could be a long season if things don't get on track...

chris perry was just promoted to triple a memphis redbirds - he has pitched in 27 games and compiled 40.1 innings in double a texas league (a notorious hitters league) with a 2.90 era, 48 k's, .200 baa and 1.36 whip - he has walked 28, which is more than he's walked in any other full season, but i imagine he's trying to expand the zone in parks where balls routinely take flight - at 6'2", 215 lbs and with a fastball that routinely sits in the low to mid 90's, he's got a shot to continue to advance - it will be interesting to see how he fares at triple a

congrats to hc...good luck in the ncaa's...rep the conference well

long, tough season for mu - i can't remember a year off the top of my head when mu lost to averett, greensboro and ferrum in the same year - happy for the seniors to go out with a win...was hoping that jordan vann might get a chance to throw some passes in his last action in green & gold, but he did make a catch :)

the monarchs figured out how to snap defeat from the jaws of victory after being up 28-7 to start the 4th...
#6
the monarchs finally win a close one, taking down ncwc 31-28...big final drive for degroot, taking mu 70 yards in a little over 1:20 to score the game winning td - he was under 50% for the day, but he got it done when it mattered most

the freshman qb for the monarchs had a coming out party, but wasn't able to bring mu all the way back...by far his best game, but the au offense overwhelmed the mu defense today, and the au defense made a couple of big plays late - mu had two td's called back - one on a holding call and the other a few plays later on a chop block - entertaining game to watch

another classic mu vs. mvc game...i was watching on live stats all afternoon, and i kept saying "just hold on boys"...i knew there would be a crazy finish...there almost always is with mu and mvc - when i saw that mu gave the ball back to mvc with a couple minutes left (in really good field position, too), i had a pit in my stomach

senior leadership at the qb position is big in close games, and pittenger is as good as it gets in this conference...kid went 5-5 for 48 yards on the game-winning drive...that's what senior qb's do

i'll make a note that accurate time keeping is one of the few things that is not your strength :)...per the box score, guilford starters appear to have been pulled with about 58 seconds remaining in the third period, as starters made every defensive and offensive play up until that point in the quarter

Three notes for ODAC and USASAC fans:

1.  Guilford football ranked (at #25) for the first time (to my knowledge) in school history.
2.  In related news, Hell freezes over at noon today.
3.  Any Averett fans making the trip to Greensboro on Saturday?  ... if so, make sure you say hello.
guilford is the real deal, and very deserving of the top 25 in my opinion, and not just because they dismantled mu last weekend - they have one of the best qb/rb/wr combo's in the region, and there is depth at rb and wr - 25 is almost as good as 27 and 10 might be the best wr on the guilford roster, although smith is going to get more "press" - what stood out to me is this...they were probably the first team i can ever remember where every person at every position was a better athlete than their mu counterpart - this guilford squad was as athletic as any team i've seen in monarch stadium in the last 2 decades - they have good size, are well coached, aggressive, athletic and have skill position players that are poised and know what they're doing - pawlowski never panics and throws such a good ball - the only thing i saw that could be a negative going forward is the number of penalties...but they've got enough talent to overcome those - they will not lose in the regular season, and if they do, it will be a massive upset

guilford could have scored 80 today...
Not sure about 80, but the Quakers were clicking ... 2nd and 3rd teams were in almost all the second half.  I was impressed with MU's kickoff returns, but the Monarchs are obviously still looking for an identity at QB.  Little bit of rain in the 2nd Quarter and overcast, so much less hot than other trips I've made to Methodist.
not to bicker, but i was watching late in the 3rd and 15, 18, 27, 25 and 10 (all starters) were still playing...i think the statement that 2nd and 3rd teams were in almost all the second half is a bit overstated...guilford dominated in every way, but let's not pretend that it was the 2nd and 3rd teamers dominating :)

before the season, i would not have thought the monarchs would be searching for an identity at qb with jordan vann - i'm a little perplexed by the fact that he has not started the first two games, but i trust the coaches know better than i do what the team needs

Narch. please check your personal messages.  Thanks
ralph - sorry i didn't get back to you...while i appreciate the offer, i don't feel qualified to be a member of the fan poll as my consumption of d3 football consists of the teams that are on the Monarchs home slate (if i can make all of the games) and what i read online and in box scores - i'm sure there are others who get to see much more d3 football in person than i, and are thus much more qualified to rank teams in the region...besides, i would have mu as the top team each week :)

let's judge the model after more than 1 year...i know that there are more in school than are on the roster, but i don't know how many more...there is no question that even i raised an eyebrow when i saw how few sophomores were on the roster - it's disappointing, but i'm not sure there is enough data to suggest this is a trend - i also know the commitment is there from the university to see this through more than a single year to measure success (or lack of success...we'll see) - this model has been proven to work at other places...i don't know what mt. union's retention was after year 1, but i'd be willing to bet it wasn't as high as it is now

nobody wants to address the concern that i have of schools that regularly roster 130 to 150 (which is also WAY more common and still WAY more than will ever play), have 6 to 8 coaches and play a token jv schedule (if any jv games at all) - the reason nobody wants to address that is because, by and large,  it's what is happening at their school(s) - it's easier to point out what others are doing "wrong" and ignore what is happening with the team you root for - in reality, there really isn't a "need" for more than about 80 to 85 on a football roster, and that roster size would call for 6 to 8 coaches - by that math, most of the programs (if not all) in this conference are recruiting way more than they can support with their coaching staff

i have a family friend who went to another usasac school fully aware that he could potentially play some jv as a freshman, but was incredibly disappointed when he realized that this particular school had scheduled just 3 jv "games" and that the "games" were nothing more than a glorified practice against another school, even down to wearing practice gear - there were no coaches committed to the jv program, little to no travel and very little interaction between jv players and coaches during the season (those coaches were focused, rightly so, on helping the varsity win games) - during the recruiting process he was sold on the fact that he would play as a freshman, even if it was on the jv team - i mentioned what mu was doing with a full jv program to this family and the response was that they wished mu had done this back when he was in school - had this kid stayed in school, i think he would have made a fine d3 football player and likely a proud graduate - instead he moved back home, attended local public u and got a degree...all while wishing he had been given a real opportunity to play as he had been promised

pat - you are correct...i would be willing to say that virtually every player thinks they are going to make an impact on the varsity, just as every pre-med student thinks he/she will be a doctor, just as every communications major thinks they'll work for espn or cnn or d3sports.com :) - being aware of possibilities and being realistic about probabilities rarely go together with the 17 to 19 year old set - hopefully a legit jv program which allows kids to get on the field and see the possibility of actually making that impact down the road will lead to more returners - i understand it didn't happen in year 1, but that doesn't mean it can't ever happen, does it?

can't wait to see some on-field football :)

The idea that a D3 school would recruit and admit far more players than could ever play, take their money for at least one term (and maybe more), and "limp them along until they quit" does not offer a pretty picture.  If by chance any of those young men are from poor families and/or are African-American and they incur debt and experience some degree of failure, the practice is even more unseemly.

It is not an uncommon practice.  It is especially ironic when it is in place at "Christian" colleges and universities.
and exactly why is incurring debt and experiencing some degree of failure unseemly specifically for african-americans? if they meet academic standards, want an education and want to take out loans for that investment, shouldn't they be allowed to just like their caucasian, asian, native-american and hispanic counterparts? i'm not sure why the color of skin is relevant in any way? do you think that BECAUSE they are african-american, they are more likely to experience failure?

many children in poor families are the most willing to take on loan debt for their education...because they realize that education is a way out - as a first-generation college student, i personally was more than willing to take on pretty significant debt...and i've never regretted it - because of my education, my life is very different from most others in my family...income, benefits, insurance, work-flexibility...you name it, i have it in spades vs. most in my family and it's all  because i've got a piece of paper - many of those poor and/or african-american kids will get that piece of paper that will allow them to break the cycle...i know MANY who have - some will not - it's sad, but there aren't many schools in the country where everyone who starts there gets a degree, and most students (poor and/or african-american or otherwise) incur some level of debt

mu has a full jv staff and a full jv schedule - i believe that every one of these kids knew exactly what he was getting into when he made the commitment - i don't believe that mu will "limp them along until they quit", as you say...why else make the commitment to a jv program? to be honest, i have a bigger issue with a school bringing in 130 - 150 with a staff of 6 - 8 and a half-assed jv program that is little more than a couple of glorified scrimmages than i do with a team bringing in 224 with 16 coaches and 9 jv games - not many schools can boast a 14:1 coach:player ratio, not many schools can tell kids they'll get 9 jv games, including 4 road games

the big roster model isn't for every school, but there are some pretty darn successful d3 programs that have similar models (see mt. union, as exhibit a) - i think as long as the model is supported with staff, facilities and a legitimate jv program, why not?
