The D-I Handbook isn't even out yet. Could be a long wait.

I think we're getting close. Many Handbooks were posted in the past couple of days, including D-II baseball.

After this update, the Handbook has 36 Pool A bids, 4 Pool B bids and 15 Pool C bids.

I will go over those numbers tonight.

I encourage others to start proofreading the Handbook, too.

The 4 conferences that do not have the AQ in baseball that have the AQ in basketball are:
1) CUNYAC (5 teams)
2) Empire 8 (5 teams)
3) North Atlantic Conference NAC (has affiliation agreement with the NEAC).
4) UAA (4 teams)

Here are the changes I saw, most of which we already knew, either because it's been posted on the boards or prior sports' new Handbooks made the same changes. Let me know if I'm wrong about anything, and please give the Handbook a once-over yourself. Chances are I missed something. Or some things.
• Two new Pool A conferences (Landmark, CAC). One Pool A conference gone (NAC).
• Now "Once ranked, always ranked" in terms of record vs. ranked opponents.
• OWP=2/3; OOWP=1/3 in figuring SOS.
• Umpire pay is slightly different.
• Maryville (Mo.) is gone from the SLIAC/Central Region.
• Baptist Bible (M-A), Presentation (MW), Mitchell (NY) and Birmingham Southern (S) are newly eligible.
• Movers are: Alvernia (from Freedom to Commonwealth), Daniel Webster (from GNAC to independent), D'Youville (from NEAC to AMCC).
• UM-Morris found its way to the Midwest Region ... welcome back!

And the more important stuff:
• The Mid-Atlantic section is missing the Landmark teams.
• I count 64 teams in New England, not 65.
• The 2009 Handbook said there were 40 teams in the West. I counted 39 because East Bay was listed (incorrectly, right?) under Pool B teams, making 40 listed if you tallied every school entry. However, the number of Pool B teams in the section header reads three, which was correct (Chapman, Menlo, U of Dallas). Add the 2009 West headers and you get 39. Count the schools and you get 40. Forty was the number listed as West eligibles in 2009. Should have been 39. Could I have made that a longer story? Probably, but it would take some effort.

Daniel Webster is in the NECC which is still in provisional status as a conference.  The NECC gets its Pool A bids in Soccer and Basketball in 2010-11.  Lesley is adding baseball in 2010-11 so the NECC will have 7 full members playing the sport next year.  We can see if the NCAA awards then a Pool A bid then.

I was surprised to see Birmingham-Southern (in year 3 of re-classification) listed a full member.  I think that that is a mistake.

Great pickup on the Landmark Conference not being listed.

New update on the Handbook came out on Feb 18th.

They have corrected the things that Oshdude, others and I have found.

I see that they have correctly re-assigned Daniel Webster to the NECC.

The UMAC members are correctly listed.

http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/champ_handbooks/baseball/2010/10_3_baseball.pdf

I still believe that Birmingham-Southern is incorrectly listed as a full member.  They should probably have an asterisk to designate its re-classification status.

I am almost positive that Birmingham Southern can't win the SCAC because they aren't eligible yet...so I would think this means that they shouldn't be a full member yet.

Given that these numbers are correct below. What is the guess at this time how many teams per region will there be..This brings up some interesting numbers.
REGION            # of Teams
Central Region           37
Mid-Atlantic Region:   58
Mideast Region:         47
Midwest Region:        38
New England Region   64
New York Region:       39
South Region:            37
West Region:            39
TOTAL TEAMS         359

2010
The championship provides for a maximum field of 55 teams. Eight teams will
compete at three first-round sites; seven teams will compete at one first-round site;six teams will compete at four first-round sites

My guess is
New England, Mid Atlantic, Mid East 8 teams
Central, Midwest, South get 6 teams

BUT who gets the 7 team regional New York or West. Both have 39 teams...

It's kind of a futile task given that regions are not given proportional representation and teams from different regions can all be mixed together in the same regional tournament.

It's not really possible to guess which tournament will have 8, 7 or 6 teams until we have a better idea who is in and where they are located.

Just Bill is right.  The travel allocations and the distribution of Pool B and Pool C winners may impact the bracketing of the teams more than Regional factors.
