The few pitchers I compared had better ERA's and/or better W/L percentages and/or more saves if closers.

BUT Still a very dominant pitcher. The game in Appleton was one of the most dominant performances ever at that level.

I found it interesting that we did not have more that 2 players from D-III All Decade teams reach MLB.  Just goes to show that to reach the big leagues, (from D-III, and stay there), you have to be a truely exceptional athlete.

Zimmermann had a great tournament and a good career but All-Decade?   Not in my opinion.  Maybe if he stayed for his senior season he might have but compare him to Lutz (who also left after his junior season) on the All-Decade list.   I would rather have Lutz on my team if I had to chose between the two players.

The fallout from College to the pros is amazing. In general, 20-25 D3 guys get drafted every year - and there are only 7 currently in the majors. Probably averaging less than 1 out of every three drafts.

Looking at the bigger picture, every step along the way there is tremendous fallout - studying it has been a hobby of mine for years. I've used the following steps to analyze the data

0-12 Year olds (essentially the little league years)
13-14 Year olds (the transition to the big diamond)
High School
College
Pro
 
Numerically, the biggest drop of is probably from 12 YO to 13 year olds - since roughly half of those who play 12 year baseball don't go on to play on the bigger diamond in Junior high and there are millions of participants at the 0-12 levels.

Leaving high school and playing college ball is probably the biggest drop off from a percentage point of view. The data I have gathered suggests that, 1 in 23 HS baseball players play some form of college baseball.

College baseball to the pros is probably equally high - but at least what I have been able to find suggests that it is 1 in 20 for all forms of college baseball to any form of pro ball. Narrow it to 4 year schools and a major league affiliated team and then it probably goes to about 1 in 30. (so no independent or overseas leagues).

One interesting factoid - take a 12 year old at random from a US Junior high school and then see what happens - they have a better chance of ending up in an Ivy league school than in a professional uniform.
