Interesting start to the West brackets as Trinity drops game 1 to the four seed Franklin.  A little bit of a sloppy game that Trinity climbed back in when they tied it in the 7th, only to give up the lead in the 9th, ultimately dropping the game 8-6.  Trinity commits 4 errors and gives up 6 earned runs but they used 5 pitchers, 3 of which threw 25 pitches or more.

Hernandez from Chapman is coming off a 1-hit shutout last week but has been touched up for 4 earned runs on 6 hits in 3 innings so far.  Whitman came out very aggressive and knocked the ball around in the first.  Curious to see if the Chapman bats can get them back in this one.

On cue, Chapman posts 6 runs in the 4th, now looking to extend their 10-5 lead with bases loaded and 2 out in the B7.

Yep, pretty good offensive game by Chapman and they definitely got some help from Whitman in the 10-5 win.  Hernandez didn't have his best day but Turner out of the pen was lights out.  We will see if Whitman can come back tonight and even things up.

Concordia in the driver's seat after two complete games pitching: a no-hitter in today's game against Franklin by Matthew Williams (12-1) and a three hitter yesterday from Calvin Bush (6-0).   That leaves them Taylor Barksdale (5-1, 3.14) for the survivor of the Franklin-Trinity elimination underway.   Oh and they have Michael Smith (7-1, 1.83) who normally relieves but has a couple of starts if it goes to a second game.

With starting pitching like that how did they lose 10 games?

Ron Boerger

It'll be Franklin trying to win two tomorrow.  Disappointing end to the season for Trinity who lost 6-3 in the nightcap.

Chapman and Whitman are set to battle it out tomorrow in game 5.  Game 5 is slated for noon but that could be pushed back due to rain in the area that has already started falling and is expected to continue through until around 10am.  Chapman is running very thin on pitching and threw 3 guys today that had a combined 7.2 innings pitched on the year.  I am guessing they will start their closer Garcia who's longest outing of the year was 4 innings.  I figure they will try and get everything they can out of him and it's all hands on deck after that.

Whitman has been very pesky in the regional and has used a pair of complete games in their wins.  No idea who will start tomorrow but I am sure they will have everyone available to try and advance to the super regional.

No matter who comes out of this one, they have a tough task at hand with the winner of the Texas Lutheran regional.  It will be either Concordia or Franklin, and both teams have showed they are more than worthy of playing in the tournament.

It took Coach Tommy Boggs half the season to solidify the starting rotation.

There are 20 starts, and only Diego Cruz-Garcia appeared to be effective.

Mostly what Ralph said.

They didn't start starting Game #1 winner Bush until late in the season.

They lost 2-3 in games where the bats didn't provide much support and 1-2 others throwing everyone in a mid-week game.

Two losses to playoff team Wash U to (11-0, 1.06 ERA) John Howard and (2-1, 1.77 ERA) Ryan Loutus.

The one outlier is that they got swept on the road against Louisiana College in Pineville.

Looks like even when Davenport and Limon started okay, the intent was always to give way to the bullpen early. [I know some coaches (Justin Hill at McNeese, etc.) are currently implementing that strategy (i.e. trying to let the stronger back-end throw more innings to finish games.]

Looks like Michael Smith may get his chance because Franklin jumped all over Barksdale (who didn't get out of the fourth) and lead Concordia 10-4 with the Tornado at bat in the bottom of the eighth.

I'm not much of a baseball fan but had to watch Franklin. Grizzlies almost managed to go down and take the Texas regional... heartbreaker with Concordia getting 2 in the 8th to tie and 2 more in the 9th to win. It was definitely exciting right down to the wire though.
Good luck to the Tornados and their still TBD opponent (Whitman-Chapman tied at 2 in the 7th inning) in the next round.

Congrats to Concordia (Michael Smith picking up the win with 4 innings of relief) and to Franklin, who surely overachieved and came oh-so-close to making it to next week's super regional at Chapman, 3-2 winners over Whitman.

Ron Boerger

Chapman gets a walkoff two-out RBI single from #9 hitter Aaron Wong (3-3 on the day) in a 3-2 win that clinched a trip to the D3 CWS. Concordia ends their season 37-13.
