Men's soccer / Empire 8
October 06, 2015, 06:06:52 AM
No thread for the Empire 8? No fans from Stevens, Houghton, St. John Fisher, Nazareth, Ithaca, Utica, Elmira or Alfred on here?
Time to get something started.

Got some important conference games Saturday, Oct. 10 with:
Elmira (4-4-2, 1-0-2) at Nazareth (0-11, 0-3)
Utica (4-7, 1-2) at St. John Fisher (0-10, 0-3)
Houghton (5-3-2, 2-0-1) at Ithaca (2-6-1, 2-1)
Stevens (7-1-2, 1-0-2) at Alfred (7-1-2, 2-0-1)

Men's soccer / Empire 8

As expected, the Alfred Saxon men's soccer team, under first-year Head Coach Matt Smith, (who routinely took Johns Hopkins men's teams to the NCAA Tournament) is having some early success. Will be interesting to see how it all pans out once Empire 8 Conference play begins.

General football / Rules of the Game
September 09, 2014, 07:18:45 PM
Pep was watching the Play of the Week nominees. The Millikin game put a question in Pep's mind about rules of the game. Pep has been reading up on college football through the decades and at one time perhaps in the early 1930s, a rule was made that a kicking team could not advance the ball on a kickoff should a fumble be recovered.

The reason the Millikin game stood out is because they did just that. My question is whether that rule still stands. Sometime between 1937-1940, Alfred's outstanding Sports Hall of Famer Walter "Bo" Johnson scored what was recorded at the game as the fastest touchdown ever scored. Johnson actually kicked off and while in full stride, a teammate hit the ball-carrying opponent, popping the ball into the air and into the path of Johnson, who caught it in stride and continued into the end zone. It was touted as the fastest TD ever scored. But then it caused great embarrassment because the officials had not ruled correctly and the ball should never have been allowed to be advanced.

Does that rule still exist in NCAA Division III football? In other words....did the officials blow the call in the Millikin game?

Just curious..... ???

General football / 2012 NFL Draft
April 03, 2012, 11:03:26 PM
Here's a list of the 2012 NFL Draft Prospects listed by college.

Happy to see a Saxon on the list. AU All-American LB Nick Clark continues to train in Dallas following a solid performance at the NFL Small College Combine in Akron, OH last month.

Because there is confusion in Pep's mind as to where to go to post regarding the NCAA Tournament clash between the Red Dragons and Saxons in Cortland Saturday, Pep thought he'd start a new thread. Let the fun begin!

While "canned music" (broadcast over the PA system) is used during pre-game drills at many D3 football stadiums, which I guess is okay because often the players are the only ones in the stadium at that time....I find "canned music" over the PA system during halftime and/or games can be offensive.

This Offenburger column from 2001 advocates bringing back the marching band/pep band rather than broadcast offensive music. Or, if you're gonna play a CD, play some college football fight songs. My son's XBox Final Four game has some great pep band music that I wouldn't mind listening to at a game--but it will never be as good as a live pep band!

The Alfred University Pep Band was begun (first year as a kazoo band) to bring back the Saxon fight song, generate some school spirit and, quite honestly, to counteract the Ithaca College Pep Band's biennial invasion of Merrill Field.

I say real colleges have football teams, fight songs.....AND PEP BANDS! What do you say?
