OH NO,  Saints just lost their young, successful coach to a D1 program.  The overnight turn around in the Saints program was directly attributed to his hiring and now he is gone.  Well, let's see if the new AD can match his first hiring with another successful hiring.  That is the chance you take when you hire a first time head coach at a D3 school. If they are successful, they leave.  Saints have been a lot of fun to watch the last two years, they moved the ball, took good shots, and played tough defense.  Hope they can find another coach with that combination.

Incredible comeback by the Falcons.  When you guys were down 6 points with a minute to play I really thought the game was over. All Lasell had to do was get the ball over half court and shoot free throws to end the game. Not sure why Laseell was unable to get the ball into their front court. That last free throw with 0.1 seconds left was nail biting. Good Luck on Sunday.

Stunning upset, as the Saints watch Lasell knock down 12 first half 3 point shots to jump on the Saints by 22 points in the first half.  Saints were playing catch up all night long and could only watch as Lasell coasted to a 98 - 77 first round victory.  Giving up wide open 3 pointers as been a major problem all year long for the Saints and it finally caught up with them at a most in opportune time.
The defensive effort to move on in the playoffs was no where to be seen tonight.  A bitter end to a once very promising season. Well, as the Cubs fans say, " there is always next year . "

Back in the middle of January the Lasell Lazers beat the Saints on a last second buzzer beater.  At that time I felt the Saints were not prepared well enough for that game. Tomorrow the Saints get a rematch with Lasell.  I am sure that the Saints will be better prepared for this game.  It should be a close game but I think the Saints will not be surprised by Lasell.  I expect a better defensive effort from the Saints and I expect them to move on in the playoffs.

I was surprised that the Saints continued in a man to man defense after getting blown out three minutes into the game. Down 21 - 6, I was expecting a change in defense, and maybe better close outs on the perimeter shooters, who were on fire. Playing from behind against a very good team is a difficult position to be in. Saints spent a lot of energy to get back into the game but had nothing left for the important last two minutes.  It did not look like the Saints were ready for the intensity that Albertus showed at the start of the game. Looks like a two team race for the GNAC championship.

WE played well in short spurts, but could not sustain the intensity needed over 40 minutes to knock off a ranked team.  The offensive explosion just appeared overwhelming.  Saints were up 31 - 22 with 7 minutes to play in the first half and then within  a few minutes they were down 46 - 43 at the half. Second half was the same way, five or six minutes of solid play, but not good enough.  Should be a good game on Tuesday.

It was bombs away for the Monks tonight in a 90 - 81 win over the Saints.  The Monks attempted 40 three point shots and connected on 18 of them to shoot down the Saints in an important GNAC contest.  The Saints defense was just not good enough tonight.  They did not run the Monks off the 3 pt line, but allowed them to set their feet and get plenty of wide open looks.  Saints effort level in contesting shots was also sub par tonight.  I was a little disappointed in the Saints game plan.  This was not the first time the Saints played the Monks this year.  The Saints know that the Monks don't have a strong post game and have to live and die by their perimeter shooters, and yet the Saints were not out behind the arc contesting the Monks shooters. I hope this loss does not cost the Saints a home playoff game.

Saints used their X-FILES connection to defeat a strong Colby-Sawyer team 89 - 70 tonight in an important GNAC game.  Fox (19) Moulder (24) combined for 43 of the Saints 89 points to break open a close game and push their league record to 5 - 1.  Saints were patient, moving the ball, finding open men, and knocking down 11 threes, while holding the Chargers to just 18% from the 3 point line. Colby-Sawyer is usually a much better shooting team then they showed tonight so there must have been some mysterious forces at work in the air tonight in the Saints gym. The answer is in the playoffs.

Saints hold on for a good road win, 95 - 79 , over a very athletic Regis team.  This game was close for the first 36 minutes, then some timely shooting by the Saints put this game in the win column.  Regis was a very tough opponent, full court pressing for the whole game, and attacking the offensive boards at opportune times.  Glad to see that when the Saints broke the Regis press they did not run wild and take bad shots.  The Saints did a good job of making the correct decisions in transition.

Saints did win the game with the Amcats 95 - 82, but I was not happy about the style of play. Saints are usually a very deliberate, patient, team moving the ball to find the best shot.  Tonight, the Saints matched the Amcats style, running up and down the court on every possession, taking the first shot available.  The tough, half court defense and patient, moving and cutting offense was not on display tonight.  Saints pushed the ball as much as the Amcats did, the big difference was that the Saints shot the ball better.  Saints showed very little defense tonight, and took advantage of the Amcats poor shot selection.  Any win is a good win, but let's hope this style of game is a once in a while occurance and doesn't become the norm.

Cannot believe the Saints won this game at JWU, 86 - 84, OT.  JWU was playing well and in control of this game for 39 minutes and 45 seconds. With 15 seconds left in the game, Saints guard drove the lane and hit a short, 10 foot jumper to tie the score at 74. After a time out, JWU set a few screens and took an open jumper from the foul line that missed. Saints grabbed the rebound and threw a long outlet pass to a streaking guard who got fouled shooting a lay up with under 1 second to play. Saints guard stepped to the foul line for two shots with 0.9 sec on the clock and the game tied at 74.  Saints guard missed both free throws to send the game into overtime. The overtime period was back and forth with both teams exchanging baskets. Saints were up 85 - 84 with 17 seconds left, and the Saints guard on the foul line for two shots.  Saints guard made one free throw, and missed the second free throw.  JWU did not call time out but pushed the ball in transition and missed the layup. Saints big man took the rebound and the Saints started to run off the court in apparent victory.  However, out of nowhere, a referee came running across the court with his arm and fist raised, calling a rebounding foul on a Saints guard.  A JWU player went to the foul line for two shots with 0.7 sec on the clock.  Now it was the JWU players turn to miss two free throws.  Instead of tying the game, he missed both shots and the Saints were fouled again on the rebound with 0.3 sec on the clock.  Saint player went to the foul line holding an 86 - 84 lead and again missed both free throws.  Fortunately, as the JWU player took the last rebound no more fouls were called and the Saints were finally able to run off the court with a well earned road victory.

Hate to say this but clearly, the Saints took the 3 - 11 Lasell team lightly.  Saints only made 5 of 25 three point shots and only 11 of 19 free throws, both uncharacteristic statistics.  The real telling statistic was only 11 assists for the Saints, they were just not moving the ball. They let Lasell hang around and lost on a last second jump shot at the buzzer.  Hopefully it will be the only time that happens this year.  Interesting game coming up on Tuesday.  J&W likes to press and push the ball in transition, while the Saints like to walk the ball up the floor, spread the floor and play a very deliberate offense. Who will control game tempo?  Saints will have to shoot better from the perimeter and reduce the number of J&W run outs. Moving the ball and will be the key.  GNAC games are starting to get good.

Nothing special about the Saints 90 - 76 win today over the Rivier Raiders except the names on Rivier roster. Two names specifically caught my eye; Greenaway and Bardanese.  Those are the names of two great GNAC players from a few years ago, just wondering if the two Rivier players are related? Maybe brothers or cousins?

Saints win the Regis New Year's tournament with an 82 - 78 win over the host team.  The game was close throughout, but the Saints were able to hold on at the end for a nice win. Saints had eight players contribute to a nice team victory.  Sometimes, when teams return from winter break they look sluggish, rusty, and not ready to play.  The Saints were none of those things, they looked in good shape, running sets with precision, and making clutch shots.  Hope that continues.

Saints pull off a stunning comeback over St Joe, Maine, 96 - 91, at the Regis New Year's tournament. St Joe was in control of the game 89 - 83 with 1:12 left to play, and had possession of the ball. All St Joe had to do was not throw the ball away and the Saints would have been forced to start fouling. The Saints switched screens at just the right time, St Joe threw the ball out of bounds, and the Saints scored the next 13 points in the last minute of play.  Good comeback win over a very solid team and great way to start the second semester.
