Today in ridiculous high school sports stories:
Longtime Faribault B.A. volleyball coach Franz Boelter was relieved of his duties by the school, for emotionally mistreating players. Supposedly. Franz has 7 state volleyball titles and 5 runner-ups. This is basically like if Mike Grant was let go. Except Franz also won over 600 games as a boys basketball coach before retiring in 2014.

Talking to a few B.A. folks, it sounds like some parents were not happy at playing time for their kids, raised a ruckus over made-up complaints and the admin caved.

I competed against Franz's teams on the basketball court and his teams were an absolute pain to play against. Disciplined, tough, physical, extremely well-coached. Over the past 15 years, I got the opportunity to know Franz and it's been an absolute pleasure. Just a great guy, in addition to his coaching abilities. I actually got to know him after my longtime high school hoops coach was unfairly dismissed. He had been longtime rivals with Franz, often heated, but after his firing he and Franz became friends.

There are so many stories about just how insane high school sports is getting and stories like this make you wonder who in the hell would ever want to coach and what the future is for prep athletics. Here's a little tribute I wrote after he retired (voluntarily) as basketball coach.

Nice piece on Coach Boelter. It is a sad state. What a crappy example. It is exactly the opposite of what we want our kids to get out of sports and competition. If we cry and whine loud enough we'll get our way regardless of right or wrong. Apparently the message of "we don't always get what we want" and "being a small part of something bigger than ourselves" is fading fast when it comes to HS sports. Anyway, I'm preaching to the choir. Thanks for sharing Fury. I hope Coach Boelter knows this isn't about him and continues to hold his head high and lead by example.

It's a piece of paper with a nice letterhead with the NCAA logo and the school logo. It has some congratulations about selecting a school and I believe a paragraph about academic and athletic excellence. It is not binding obviously.

First google search for it came up with Mount's form.  http://athletics.mountunion.edu/recruiting_central/celebratory_signing_form.pdf

Yeah. That seems a lot like the forms I've seen in other pictures. It's really just to provide a ceremony. Something to build around. I like it, especially when schools group their athletes together and allow each one a time to sign and say a few words, but let them celebrate as a group. My h.s. has done something similar for the last 3 or 4 years. They had one big-time D1 recruit in football, a few in soccer, two for baseball and a couple for softball, but only the football guy did his own thing. The other FBS, FCS and DIII kids all had their signing celebration together. I don't think any of the kids went DII. It's just not really a popular choice in NJ.

Yep, this kid can really play. He's probably a holdover from signing day. Not sure what the plan is for him, but it appears he can play either side of the ball extremely well.

I'm a little late posting this - The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported athletes "signing" on "signing day", and they actually had some language in there to acknowledge DIII kids were "committing" and not "signing".

I'm pretty sure the Johnnie and Tommie commits have been reported here (I reported the Johnnie signing), but there's a couple others:

Max Myers, Brookfield Central, St. Thomas
Joey Lang, New Berlin Eisenhower, St. John's
Seth Bickett, Pewaukee, St. Thomas
Jake Nation, Shorewood/Messmer, Macalester
Angus White, South Milwaukee, St. Olaf

Thanks MRF, nice to see some other school commits. (Outside of UST)
