Wally Wabash

I consider you the expert not only on Dlll, but certainly the NCAC. What the hell happened to Witt?
I thought, like most people, that Witt would play Mount in our bracket in round 3. I was really shocked. A storied program getting beaten by "Frostburg State who?"
Would love to hear your always educated thoughts. Thanks!

I unfortunately feel the NCAC was down this year and playing weak teams in a majority of your games does not prepare anyone for NCAA play!

I didn't see a lot of games but that was the feeling I had as well. For example watching the Bell game it looked like both teams were really small in size. That could just be from watching more D1 than D3 this year. I need to take a look at the rosters and see if this is true or not.

Credit where due, that was a great catch by Hagan.

They throw almost every pass at #2

Damn shame how much this program has degenerated in the last 2 years. It's really hard to watch.

Quote from: wally_wabash on October 28, 2017, 08:27:07 PMThe thing that has killed Wabash all season is that Knoche gets his ass kicked by every DC in the league and it isn't close.  The other DC might as well be calling Wabash's offense the way it gets read and anticipated.  With the players he inherited, it's inexcusable to have a pass offense ranked below 200 in the division, and yet here we are.  This team doesn't need a 300 ypg passer.  It does have to be able to complete passes at respectable percentage, and it has to throw competently enough to make another defense respect it.  It does neither, and a team like Witt will suffocate you with that deficiency, which they did.

I feel like a lot of the heat that has been directed toward Don Morel could be alleviated if Wabash had a new OC next year. If he doesn't make a change, then the heat is deserved. This offense is putrid and a change needs to be made.

Why would they get a new OC when they are just not that good. That kind of talk will just do wonders for recruiting. I don't see anything changing as long as they are .500 team.

I'm confused by this.  Who isn't good?

After the game during coach Morels interview he said they had to play perfect because they are just not that good. This isn't the first time he has mentioned this. I would never say that in an interview or to anyone at any time if it had a chance to get back to the players. But that's just me.

Love the comments coach made after the game. We had to play a perfect game because we are not that good and the refs made a terrible call in first half. How do you not get the ball in Ike James hands with a pass in the last series of plays. Is what it is and I don't see anything changing for the better for a long time. Wabash men played hard.

The punt return thing is incredible.  It really is. Wabash has forfeited at least 60 yards of field position today because they don't catch punts.

Last thing I'm going to post about the punt return this season.   On Saturday Oberlin averaged 52.9 yards per punt on 8 punts.  Their average coming in to the game was 36.6 yards per punt (very respectable already).  On the 8 punts, Wabash surrendered a total of 130 yards of field position vs. Oberlin's per punt average entering the game.  That's a lot of yards to just give away for an offense that sometimes (often) really struggles with long fields.  Wabash was fortunate to take back all of those yards on two very long runs by Isaacs James and Avant, but you can't really count on a 75 yard run to get you out of jail multiple times in a game.

Also of note here is that Oberlin p-b-p guy Don Vincent, who is clear and knowledgeable and funny and calls a fantastic game, pointed out that Oberlin's punter was punting a little more flat than usual and surmised, after 3-4 punts, that this was purposeful.  Wabash not fielding punts is now a thing that teams are game planning for because you can steal yards (lots of them) by short hopping the return guy. Everybody in the league sees it and is now weaponizing it on purpose.  Don Vincent astutely picked up on this just watching and calling the game.

I'd say there are two options.
- Have no return guy and sell out to block every single punt.
- Send two guys back, different depths, and fair catch everything.  No returns, just catch the damn thing.  Wabash did this against Denison to great effect.  They then immediately went away from it and got back to watching 65 yard punts roll dead inside the 5 on the regular.

[/end rant]

Beat Witt!

This has not been a problem until last year. Why not just put one guy back that can and will catch the ball like in the past. You can't tell me there's not one guy on the roster that can catch punts on a consistent basis. In 2014 Wabash caught and returned 29 punts for 239 yards. This does not include fair catches(don't know where to find that stat). If memory serves me, most of the time there was only 1 person back.
