Luckily the roads going to and from Collegeville last night were fine. Great atmosphere at SJU last night to accompany a well played game by both sides. It was fitting that Jordan Dick was able to shoot the last two free throws, since he is the lone senior for the Gusties.

Should be another great one at Olaf on Friday. Within 30 minutes of the end of the GAC-SJU game last night, I had already heard rumblings of GAC students organizing fan buses to go to Olaf on Friday night. I would anticipate a minimum of 75-100 Gustie students at Olaf Friday night. Gustie students should easily get one fan bus full, if not two. If Olaf gets the same student section they had at their home game against UST, it will be LOUD in Northfield on Friday night. I am looking forward to that one!

Maniac...I and many others are wondering how many years the MIAC has been a two bid league to the NCAA tournament?

Go to the D3hoops.com home page and download the Conference Guidebook from under the men's menu. Gives you a great rundown of each conference's participation and performance in the NCAA Tournament since the current playoff format went into place in 1999-2000.

Pat - If any other team besides the Tommies or Oles win the MIAC Playoff - does the conference stand a chance getting three teams into the NCAAs? In this scenario St. Thomas and St. Olaf would each receive an at-large bid. Tough choice by the selection committee considering that St. Thomas is ranked #12 and the Oles are receiving 18 votes (essentially ranked #31)

I agree mostly with what you have to say Drake. UST and STO are clearly the conference front-runners. I have seen STO play twice, but haven't seen SJU or UST yet.

The Gusties looked like a much better team this afternoon. The rise of Gary Cooper helps significantly since Isaac Tapp went down with an injury. Cooper was a huge spark for the Gusties today off the bench. He brings size, speed, quickness and athleticism with a solid shot. Jordan Dick was hitting on all cylinders from the field today. He has a gorgeous shot!

I am interested to see how the Gusties will play against SJU on Monday night. They beat them soundly in the first go-around, but both teams have seemed the change quite a bit since then.

After looking at the league standings after tonight's game, looks like 11-12 conference wins will have to be the magic number for teams to get in to the playoffs.

UST, CC, and Auggie are all in. Carleton, SJU, and Bethel all have a great chance to get to that 11 win mark with their remaining schedules.

Gustavus has a tough road. With ten wins, they need 1-2 wins against UST at home, CC on the road - which is always tough - and Carleton on the road.

I think Gustavus has a solid chance to beat Carleton. It still looks like a tough road for the Gusties in their final three games though. They have always played UST tough at home the least few years, so we will see what happens Wednesday night.

Being at the Gustavus-Hamline game today, I noticed the Hamline team plays chippy and talks...a lot. Leadership from a head position definitely seems to be lacking. It will be interesting to see what happens after the season. A changing of the guard definitely should occur in my opinion.

I also enjoyed the fact Hamline was complaining about calls to the referees. And eventually a technical was given. I wonder if they stopped complaining so much and actually played the game that they might be successful. They have an ego and I don't know where they got it from.

I was at the game and for the most part they were letting both teams play - definitely favored Michigan because of their style of play. All in all, it was a great game to watch and be at, the Barn was loud! Free throws late in the game and turnovers hurt the Gophers and you can't let a Top 10 team shoot 54.9% in the game and expect to win. Great game to be at.

You would think St. Thomas would have a better SI department considering their athletic presence in the MIAC and the Nation. Why are they always last posting scores and stats to the MIAC and on their website? And you would think they could at least provide live stats as well. I'm not sure why they cannot when every other school in the MIAC can provide live stats.

Having had four years of first-hand and second-hand experience with MIAC athletics - I feel bad for the conference as a whole, mostly all of the other teams. It brings negative attention to the conference and unneeded attention, all because of one bad egg. I also feel bad for Hamline University as a whole, because of this one incident, their reputation as an entire university will take a hit in recruiting quality students. I do have to say, sadly, I am not as surprised an incident like this occurred with the Hamline team. Had it been Bethel, St. Thomas, St. Olaf, St. John's, etc. - I would have been much more shocked. Just my personal opinion and I do not intend to attack any team, player, coach, or institution.

Carls over SJU - Carleton playing well, will be interesting to see how SJU plays after big win at GAC
Auggie over Bethel - Auggies have too much depth
Hamline over SMU - Pipers handle Cards with ease
GAC over St. Olaf - this is assuming Gusties learn quickly, couldn't contain dribble vs. SJU, GAC size will beat up Oles with Shay, Hill and Sallstrom
Tommies over CC - Tommies to good overall, too much depth. We'll see how CC plays with UST

Bethel 75 Carleton 68 - Taylor Hall is too much for the Knights to handle
St. Olaf 80 MAC 57 - Oles ride their hot shooting guard play to an easy win
Augsburg 74 CC 72 - could go either way, Auggies to much inside and out
Gustavus 77 SJU 59 - Gustie crowd and experience win easily
St Thomas 85 Hamline 62 - Tommies too deep, skilled and talented for Pipers

Also my expected order of finish:

1. UST -- too deep, too talented
2. Augsburg-- Kprbaum gives power presence in paint to compliment 3-shooters
3. Carleton-- the cupboard is never bare with Kalland around...short bench hurts
4. Concordia-- size + experience= contender?
5. Gustavus-- never rule a Hanson-coached team out
6. Bethel-- Coulda been a title contender but injuries hurt (bad pun)
7. Hamline-- could be a sleeper, but front line is question mark
8. Macalester-- will be much improved
9. St John's-- it could be a LONG season
10. St. Olaf-- another potential sleeper
11. St Mary's-- wont go winless

The battle for 4-10 will be interesting....a lot of "ifs" and "what ifs" and "could bes"

Player of Year:  1. Hannon; 2. Peters; 3. Sawatzke; 4. Kornbaum (taller one); 5. T Hall

to the NCAAA field: UST, Augsburg and Carleton

Augsburg looked really good tonight against Gustavus. They were bigger and stronger than the Gusties in the post and their three point shooters were hot from outside. The Kornbaum (tall one) and Rasmussen could present a big problem for MIAC teams this season.

Gustavus other the other hand needs to find a new identity. With only four current players (Sallstrom, Hill, Biewen, Shay) receiving significant playing time last season, they will need Jordan Dick, Isaac Tapp and a few other sophomores to step up to fill in the roles.

As for the conference as a whole, St. Thomas looks ripe for another conference title and a deep run into the NCAA's (Natty 'Ship?) and potentially going undefeated in the conference if they are consistent. I feel the rest of the conference (teams 2-6) will beat each other up and 2-3 playoff spots will go down to the wire (go figure) and be decided in the last game of the season.

The Gustie student fan base has already coordinated 4 full bus loads for Friday's game in RF. What a lucky draw for the team to get a first round draw 2 hours from campus and 1 hours from the cities when 1/2 of the Gustie students are from the cities, including alumni.

Supe & DP-- you both underestimate one VERY important thing. I will be dining @ Kim's to the tune of a half fried chicken dinner. :)
All I can say is NEVER underestimate the power of the chicken!!

Panic mode is about to set in tho, as Kim's doesn't open till 2 on Sunday. Maybe I can bribe them to open early for me?

i am going to have to start eating that stuff before i play golf on saturdays.   :o

great game at st. thomas.  deberg and hall were both monsters for their repsective teams.  nice call on the shooting percentages, drake.  i really thought that at the half the royals were going to make their big run.  but the tommies athleticism and shooting matched and surpassed the royals.  bethel was unable to exert the same pressure last night that they had on the lesser talented gusties and oles.

how about baah's block and hall's subsequent dunk going the other way in the first half!!  wow, that was amazing.  royal fan's nearly convulsed with joy!  it was a great second half of the season for the royals, as they have now clearly returned to the upper tier of the league where they had been for years.

tommorrow's game in st. paul should not be close, but the gusties will find a way to make a game out of it.  if kim's won't open early for you maniac, i might suggest leftovers from tonight.   ::)

many of us await a report on the fan's behavior in st. peter last night.  any mr. burns sightings?   ::)

No Mr. Burns sightings last night at Gus Young....however, Andy Burns was seen bumping the shoulders of Gustie student fans as he walked into the locker room. The chants of "DUI, DUI, DUI!" and "Sober cab, sober cab, sober cab!" may have gotten to him....

The Gustie faithful was loud and proud last night as usual in these atmospheres....around 2000 people there total and easily 500+ students, maybe 750. They were creative and themed the game a "costume out" where the students dressed in their most bizarre and ridiculous costume they could find.

This Gustie squad is ready for the Tommies. Deep down though, they would have loved a shot at Bethel on their home court for the championship!

I don't know that we should exclude parents from RTC.    ---The only restriction I would advocate for is when the RTC is used as an excuse to taunt the opposing team or fans as may have happened this fall when the Auggies were on the other side of the upset at Clemens.

Good point AO. Not that this justifies it at all, but there was some taunting by the Augsburg players directed at SJU fans seated in the endzone after the miracle finish this fall. Given the number of SJU students sitting in those seats, I'm not surprised it carried over into this BB matchup.

Should be some great games to finish things out. I'm pulling for two upsets and the rare 5-6 matchup for the title. It's definitely been a crazy finish to the season!

If Bethel beats UST on Friday, I think Westlund might pull off the unlikely COY award. He'd have beaten three of the other most likely candidates H2H in three straight road games. Big if, but it'd make his second half finish that much more impressive.

I have no problem whatsoever with students rushing the court, but keeping Csid's perspective in mind - this was simply a quarterfinal playoff win, not a win over a nationally ranked opponent, a bitter archrival, miracle 1st place finish etc.  And as so many posters are fond of disparagingly commenting –the team the Johnnies beat was only "lowly Auggie Tech."  Plus, aren't the big, bad, Johnnies used to bullying their way through most athletic endeavors?  Given the number of times and years the Johnnies have manhandled most of the league in football, last fall's epic upset football win by Augsburg and post game celebration is to be understood.  The big dog always has a target on his back - Johnnies in football, Gusties and Tommies in basketball. Obviously, the post football game celebration was not appreciated by Johnnie fans, but Augsburg earned the win, and the right to celebrate.

On the other hand RTC by parents for the express purpose of taunting?!?  Give me a break. We're supposed to be role models.  I'm just glad the Augsburg students displayed more maturity than a middle aged, former jock living his life out vicariously through his son.

I'm hoping there's still a breath of creativity left in the Gustie student body.  With two days to prepare, they should be able create some great cheers, banners, and posters and give Mr. Tom Burns a nice, warm Gustie welcome on Friday night...and throughout the game. 8-)  Perhaps ROR or someone else at the game can provide a post game report Friday night/ Saturday morning.  :D

HAHAHAHAHA! Funny you mention that because the Gustie students did their research and found out Mr. Tom Burns' son, Andy, ran into a little trouble with the law in the past year....we'll just leave it at that. Anticipate many chants, jeers and cheers. I wonder if Mr. Burns will handle himself like he did at the Augsburg game? ;-)

Doesn't Bethel go to play St. Thomas, not the Johnnies?  I would think the top seed gets the lowest remaining seed, but I haven't kept up with things a whole lot this season.  Can anyone clarify this?

C'mon fellas...the Gusties play Saint John's and UST plays Bethel. The one seed plays the lowest seeded team remaining, and the two seed plays the highest seeded team remaining. MIAC Playoffs isn't the traditional bracket style it once was.

Definitely a good situation for the Gusties matchup wise for Friday. It'll be a showdown with GAC geared and ready to go, and the Johnnies coming off a huge win and looking for a little redemption after getting tossed around in Collegeville by the Gusties just over a week ago.

Someone better call the St. Paul fire marshall because the UST-Bethel game could be a barn burner! I'm sure it'll feel like a MIAC championship and not a semifinal game.

Lookin forward to it all!
