Also ... in other news ... not sure if it has made the rounds on here (if I missed it I apologize ... every time I revisit this site there are 5 new pages of CCIW chat to catch up on). But Hayden Monix (6-7) of Lowell High School has committed to play basketball at Illinois Wesleyan.

Thanks Gregory Sager for offering a response to my questions.  Much appreciated.

I agree with you that Ken Falkner wasn't a bad ref, and indeed probably was as good or better than most others.  The thing about his "air"...(not hair, which of course is a very nice coloring job)....but air,... is that he seemed to have bigger rabbit ears than many of the ref's.  It seems like he delighted in talking with coaches, players, and fans (at times) which slowed down the action.  To me, he carried himself as if "this is only a game" when in fact the players were out there fighting for their team to win. ...
because it is only a game   And, the really good officials and coaches find good ways to remind all of us.
"Rabbit ears" :). Add read body language and lip reading to traits that make good officials because the better ones actually have terrific people skills.  They are just "tuned in" better than most.

Gander...as far as I know they still keep score, and there are winners and losers, coaches get paid a lot of money, kids get grants to play, people pay to see games, grown men with money in their pockets take the time to follow blogs, etc.  So, while it is just a game....each game has purpose, and I would hate to think the ref is just out there earning his $70 bucks with little regard for the "importance" to the players.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of officials who are just earning a pay check. Every coach in every league can point to its share of those type of officials. It's sad, but I'm not sure it is avoidable ... Especially on Saturday games when EVERYONE in the country is playing.

Also --- D3 officials are making significantly more then $70 a game.

Blackburn's Chris Davis now over 1000 pts. Impressive feat playing at a miserable school with terrible leadership. Surprised he has stayed this long
Jason was a good guy, we went out for dinner before a game, wondering where he is now, what he's doing.. I remember his wife wanted to get back to upstate NY to be near family... hope things worked out for him....

I believe he is back in New York working in Finance.

RIP Jim Shaw. He was a good man who I enjoyed seeing almost every year in Salem. I am so glad I took the time to chat with him last year. He always had a smile on his face. He will be missed: http://athletics.rose-hulman.edu/sports/mbkb/2015-16/releases/20151110ebut8a

I know that Jim and your dad were close

IWU won the two varsity periods vs Hanover by 10 points total today.

The Titans open at home a week from today vs Benedictine.

Any recap of the scrimmage from our faithful IWU posters? I'd be curious to find out why Hanover was able to stay with the Titans. While both were picked 3rd in their respective leagues ... I would think IWU would have been favored by more, especially how it sounds like they played against ONU. Hanover is traditionally a pretty good program so ... perhaps not unexpected? (Of course a 10pt game could be a close game that blew up at the end, or a blowout that ended up closer then the final score would indicate)

DIII Blackburn College (IL) has named Steve Kollar as their new head coach.  He replaces Jason Baribeau who resigned back in April.  Kollar was most recently an assistant Benedictine University (IL), and has also been an assistant at St. Francis (IL).  Since 2014, he has been involved with the Mercury Elite AAU.

Looking at Augustana's chances to host a sectional, here are the relevant seeding numbers in Augie's Sweet 16 grouping...

(I'm looking at this from an Augie perspective, so assuming a win over DePauw.)

Augustana: .852/.584/7-2 (Central #1)

Mount Union: .786/.555/4-5
Calvin: .800/.511/3-1

Defiance: .769/.478/0-1
St. Olaf: .808/.527/1-5

Marietta: .893/.519/4-3 (Great Lakes #1)
Wooster: .786/.551/3-2

The first question is, who is the highest seed?  Marietta is the only one of these teams that could be a higher seed than Augie...but I'm confident Augie's numbers have the Vikings as the higher seed of the two.  So Augie is in great shape as far as seeding - the Vikings seem to very clearly be the highest seed in the Sweet 16 grouping.

So then we look at geography.  Using Massey to pick winners, let's say...
* Augustana (Rock Island, IL)
* Mount Union (Alliance, OH)
* St. Olaf (Northfield, MN)
* Marietta (Marietta, OH)

This is two flights either way.  Either Augie and St. Olaf have to fly to the Ohio schools, or vice versa.  So Augie wins as the highest seed.

Now where it gets interesting is...
* Augustana (Rock Island, IL)
* Mount Union (Alliance, OH)
* Defiance (Defiance, OH)
* Marietta (Marietta, OH)

Defiance as the sectional host would require zero flights - all 4 schools are within 500 miles.  But I just don't see Defiance as a realistic option based on seeding.  I think it comes down to Augustana or Marietta.  Marietta would mean just 1 flight...Augustana would mean 2 (Defiance can bus to Rock Island).  And Marietta might be close enough to Augie as a seed to justify saving the $$ and giving it to Marietta.

So bottom line, if you are an Augie fan, you are a big St. Olaf fan tonight.  As long as St. Olaf is in the Augie Sweet 16, providing another "west" anchor, Augie is a lock to host the sectional.

Hope I'm not missing something obvious, but that is how I see it.

Bob --- would Defiance's gym be big enough to host next weekend? D3 hoops lists it as capable of seating 1800, but having watched a game there before, there is absolutely no way that is an accurate number (perhaps if you include floor seating for graduation or a concert).

With all the talk about POY consideration ... a question to those who have been following the CCIW for much longer then I. When is the last time a POY has been awarded to a team that did not finish in the top 4 (i.e. make the conference playoffs post 2006).

I'm not saying that Mr. Henry does not deserve to be named Player of the Year ... however, I think there is something to be said for winning. I know that each year is different... but my contention (without doing the research) would be that should Mr. Henry be named POY --- it would be an anomaly (not that he wouldn't deserve it).

I think that winning is one of the factors that goes into coaches minds when they vote.

The decision regarding whether or not to archive games for later public viewing is a judgment call for the programs that are able to offer the service; I know that Tom Slyder is reluctant to put most North Park games online after the fact, because it's in essence offering upcoming opponents more game film for them to look at. So I appreciate that, after a couple of this season's big wins (vs. Augie, vs. IWU) he's allowed North Park SID Kevin Shepke to post the archived webcasts online.

Not sure I buy that argument ... all CCIW coaches have access to every game that every other conference school plays. There may be a well thought out reason for being reluctant to post games online, but I doubt that competitive advantage within the CCIW is one of them.

Again, maybe his concern lies outside of the conference, in which case I'll defer to Tom as he is much more of an expert then I.

Is the CCIW doing the coaches chat this year? I've always enjoyed reading the coaches thoughts. Also, any idea when preseason coaches poll comes out? In the past I believe its been mid October.

5. North Central -- impressive talent returning at both the perimeter and post, but I'm not sure about the depth yet.

Out of curiosity, and really not trying to pick a fight, but what impressive talent do you see returning for NCC? I think I have more questions then answers for this years team. Only time will tell. Hopefully they can replace Vince and Landon ... But that is easier said then done. Just my opinion.
