Good luck to my Statesmen tonight against CNU. Just like four years ago nobody is picking you.....then you won the first 2 games only to be shut down by COVID. Good Defense, Ball Control, accurate shooting from the field and on the line and don't be intimidated by their BIGS. GOBART!

Hobart v Moravian week #3 at the Boz and RPI v UWLacrosse week#1 at Troy. Nice.

My two cents on Coach Drach is, you have a good one that'll totally change your offense if he feels he has the right QB and Offensive talent. Union was pretty boring and predictable last year on Offense, but you got it done. On the season forecast, remember that Union and Ithaca play at the Boz this year , which is advantage Hobart, IMO. We'll see, it's a great competitive league and Hobart has not won the LL since Ithaca joined, but they have to win their home games to have a chance. A short six months to go ;D

Quote from: Ryan Scott (Hoops Fan) on February 26, 2024, 02:00:15 PMI'll most likely be at Widener Friday - it's the closest site to my house - would love to meet any/all of you who make the trip!
Ryan, thanks for all your work at D3hoops. Four years ago I went to Springfield to see Covid eliminate Hobart from the tournament after they beat a #14 and a #17 ranked St.Joes(CT) and Springfield in 2 exciting games. Interestingly, our next opponent was going to be CNU. Well four years later we finally get to play them. While LL basketball might not be expected to do much in the NCAAs, this Hobart team could surprise this pod. They rebound well, played energized defense against SLU and can be a streaky team from behind the arc. Coach Thompson is a Hobart grad that was a great point guard and has done a fantastic job with the talent this year. Hopefully the Widener rims will be kind to them.
I won't see you in PA, because we've been fortunate with our Winter sports this year and I'll be attending the Hobart Hockey NEHC Championship game in Geneva as we hopefully advance and repeat as National Champions.
Have a great weekend and hopefully my Statesmen will surprise you.

I watched portions of the D3hoops show yesterday and they are projecting a Hobart matchup with Newport News in the first round which would be ironic since Hobart was scheduled to play NN in 2020 after they beat Springfield before the Covid shutdown. We'll see what the committee actually determines.SLU was one of the last few teams eliminated from PoolC , so it looks like just one team from the LL .

Quote from: stlawus on February 25, 2024, 04:03:59 PMHome and away splits were the story of the season, and it was fitting that it was the main factor today.  Nothing but kudos to the Statesmen for defending home court.  They made the tough shots that kept SLU at arms length the whole game.   Most SLU losses the last 3 years were a result of poor free throw shooting, and while that was not the only reason it was a big reason today.   The Statesmen forced SLU to take low percentage shot attempts all game, and SLU repeatedly took their bait.  There was a brief window of opportunity with about 2:30 left for SLU, but multiple bricks and missed free throws sealed it.

Well played to Hobart who were poised and never panicked and used home court to great advantage. Nothing but a tip of the cap to the Statesmen and I wish them the best of luck next weekend.  The Liberty League has gotten the shaft in NCAA selections the past few years as far as first round opponents, so hoping Hobart gets a good draw. Commentator for Hobart is good but I really don't know why he thinks Hobart will host, but I'd definitely love that to be the case.

Still a great season for SLU.  Hard to repeat in this league, and they played well despite the targets on their backs.   Future is still bright for this group, they bring back 4 starters and still have a decent amount of freshmen and sophs coming back along with a veteran starting core.
Great game to watch as a Statesman fan, as they win the LL title for the first time in 10 years. SLU has some great talent but were behind rather early that put them in a hole. Hobart moved the ball well on offense to counter the long arm defense of SLU and Hobart played one of its better games defensively as they were aggressive from the start. Having home court in a game like this is critical as the Hobart athletes/fans showed up in big numbers to support Bball . I think every hockey player was there, as they should pack the Cooler for the Conference Championship next Saturday against Skidmore.
I wore the same orange Hobart sweatshirt I wore to the Springfield game we won in the NCAA tourney before Covid shut us down, and it brought luck again. I'm sure we'll get a lousy pairing for the tournament and I'd be surprised if we get a home game as the LL usually gets screwed....but we'll find out tomorrow.
Great turnout by the SLU fans today, they should be proud of the team and their program. Today was just not their day, but I'm sure they'll be ready to go next year, and probably be the favorites.

Quote from: unionpalooza on February 23, 2024, 11:10:10 AMThe boards are back!  So much to discuss!  In Union's world, the big news is the hire of Coach Drach, who looks like a great fit and is off to a great start by all accounts.  Should make for some very special Union-Hobart tilts down the line.  I can't wait to see how Drach does - he is a major upgrade in terms of head coaching experience/maturity and playcalling over last year's staff, and he'll inherit a talented, experienced offense and strong overall roster.  Bigger holes to fill on defense with the retirement of DC Flanders and the loss of most of last year's elite front seven.  Apparently recruiting has gone very well notwithstanding the second head coach transition in as many years.  Only one real transfer that I know of (Landers Green, per above); a couple of graduating seniors are going to play their fifth year at D2s/elsewhere, but that was expected as Union does not have graduate programs, so harder to keep them around post-COVID.

What's the word elsewhere?
Coach Drach was a very good Offensive Coordinator at Hobart. He will take a special interest in the QB position based on his personal playing experience. He is a bit on the "arrogant" side, so he should fit in very well at Union ;D

Yeah, I'm very interested to see how he approaches the QB room.  Patch Flanagan has the inside track, and is a fast, athletic QB who can both throw and run, and there are a couple of well-regarded younger guys who are more pure passers.  For the past few coaches, Union's passing game was successful but pretty limited to sideline outs, WR screens and deep balls, which is not enough to get the job done against the best teams.  I am hoping Drach can develop a broader passing game with more throws over the middle, a QB who can patiently get to his third or fourth read, etc.

I'm confident that, whatever he does, play calling will be much improved.  (Last year it was a mess, often forcing things that weren't working and failing to recognize what was; never gave the offense a real chance at Ithaca or Hopkins.)
Coach Drach should not disappoint the Union football family. He is very smart and will handle communications well. Drach could have been a good choice for Hobart in 2018 but Hobart selected one of their grads in Kevin DeWall(Both were excellent Coordinators for Coach Cragg). Jon has been successful overall at Wilkes(except for a 2-3 record against rival King's College). There should be a competitive tension between these two coaches when the Garnet Charges meet the Statesmen this Fall at Jon's old Boswell home in Geneva.

Hobart fans were pumped tonight , the most noise I've heard in years. They played defense, shot well when they needed to and rebounding was sound. RIT had a ton of fans but not much to cheer for as Hobart dominated almost all night. I think Hobart stands will be packed Sunday with Colleges and Geneva fans(entry is free). The Statesmen are ready to play the Saints and even though Hobart has home court, I think SLU defense might be a challenge for the Statesmen. It should be a great game and I'm expecting a close exciting contest that will be a heartbreaker for the loser.
Great weekend with Hobart hosting the LL basketball, the reigning NCAA D3 Hockey Champs have a NEHC playoff game tomorrow. Also, Cornell lax on Tuesday in Ithaca ....This is a great sports time as Winter sports wind down and Spring sports begin.

Stlawus, thanks for restarting the discussion in time for the playoffs. I've been very happy with the job Coach Thompson has done this year as this is the "tightest"Hobart  team we have seen recently. After losing Jackson M, he had a real challenge to mold this team , which plays as a well balanced squad and does not give up.
As far as the tournament is concerned, anything can happen. Relying on defense(SLU is excellent) is a good strategy as well as ball possession , but I've noticed each of these teams can have a cold shooting night , and when that happens, they struggle. As far as Hobart, they will get their rebounds but they must defend well and hopefully have a good shooting tournament. They are good from the foul line which is always tournament friendly, and when Healy and Moesch hit their threes this is a tough team to beat.I'd love to see a Hobart -SLU final at Bristol, but any of the final four teams could come away with the tourney title. Good luck to the SLU boys tonight.

Welcome back to the Board. In Hobart Football news, Hobart Hall of Fame coach Mike Cragg has retired from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He was the most successful coach in the history of the Hobart football program having turned the reigns over to one of his own, Kevin DeWall. Most recently he was a Senior Director in the HWS Advancement office. A summary from the announcement:

"Hobart football's all-time wins leader, Cragg directed the Statesmen to 157 wins against just 62 losses, a .717 winning percentage. His teams earned 11 Liberty League Championships and 10 NCAA playoff bids, advancing to the national quarterfinals in 2012 and 2014.

After going 4-6 in 1995, his first season as head coach, Cragg finished each of the subsequent 22 seasons with a winning record. The Hobart quarterfinal teams of the past decade established new program records for wins in a season, each posting a 12-1 mark in the final ledger. From 2011 to 2015, Cragg led the Statesmen on an impressive 24-game winning streak against Liberty League opponents.

Cragg mentored 326 all-conference selections, including 24 players of the year (offensive, defensive, or special teams) and seven rookies of the year. He also coached dozens of All-Americans, including consensus All-Americans Dave Russell '98, Alex Bell '05, Tyre Coleman '15 and Ali Marpet '15. Several Statesmen have gone on to play football professionally, most notably Marpet, who was the 61st overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft and won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers."

Coach Cragg's teams were always prepared and feared no one. He was known as the "Riverboat gambler" for his calls at key points in the game (fake punts and field goals, unexpected onside kicks and trick offensive plays often devised by now coach DeWall). Thanks to Coach Cragg for putting Hobart Football on the national scene , especially with his special player Ali Marpet introducing himself on Monday Night Football as Ali Marpet from THE HOBART COLLEGE.

Thanks Coach and HIP HOBART(FOOTBALL) FOREVER!

Few days late but huge congrats to Cortland on an amazing win and run. That Cortland team never looked intimidated by North Central or the situation at any point in the game. Even when they'd give up big plays to let NC back in, Cortland came right back at them and responded. Lehnan was very good. I think it was ABUNDANTLY clear, Boyes is a step above. Boyes played what I would describe as a nearly perfect game. He was flawless, clutch, tough as nails, and led by example. The entire Cortland team came to play and I was psyched when the game was over and I didn't have to watch #99 on NC's D jumping up and down every other play like a tool. Act like you've been there before my man, you have been. The Stagg Bowl now runs through New York. Sounds good to the ears. Congrats! On to 2024...
+k Mach......Never would have thought it was possible....we were all Red Dragons in New York for the Stagg Bowl.

The Final Top 25 is out. It's great to see that Cortland was a unanimous #1 garnering all 25 votes as it should be. Ithaca moved up one spot from #19 to #18 and Union finally entered the poll at #21. It was an epic season for NYS football.
Congrats to Ithaca and Union on their final rankings, the only ranking that matters. With Cortland winning it all and some of the East success this year, I'm hoping that the coaches are taking advantage of this recruiting window. I still can't believe that a New York State team are actually Champions this year thanks to an awesome run by the Cortland Red Dragons. 2024 Football season.....can't wait. Best to you all and your familys  this Holiday season.
