UMD moved from the MIAC to D2 in the mid 70's. I don't think any of the MIAC schools continued playing them. I think SJU had a decent rivalry with UMD over the years.

Concordia Morehead played D2 Morehead State D2 school for many years. Not certain why they stopped.

There was a final SJU-UMD meeting in early '80s at Metrodome. JG vs. Jim Malosky. Two tremendous coaches. Malosky was a throwback to the great old Gopher teams, a teammate of Verne Gagne. I believe the UMD qb was the late Bruce Grant, Mike's younger brother. Bulldogs won, I believe.

This seems to indicate the waters may be a bit muddy for UST Football finding a home. From Tommie Media school/student site.

Interesting and especially interesting that she is the commissioner of both conferences. I would think any formal request for the affiliate memberships for hockey and football would come after NCAA waiver approval but would be surprised if they have not had preliminary talks.

One of the major reasons for the SJU/U$T rivalry has always been the similarity of the institutions.  Most players were recruited by and considered both schools, and many have friends/HS teammates/HS rivals on both sides of the field.  The institutions appear to be diverging, and with that, I think the rivalry will fade.

From the article:
QuoteSaturday in the spectacular soccer stadium — and then one last time in Collegeville next November. Unless it's moved to a larger venue?

"We're not moving it," Fasching said. "We like playing on our field. If it's the last one, it should be in a true college atmosphere."

* How does Dolan deal with a strong defense and the pressure he will undoubtedly feel? Against UW-EC pressure, he looked a bit frazzled at times but hopefully has grown since then.

Tommies will be hoping that Dolan puts on his man-pants this game because he will be feeling pressure.  Tommie receiver #6 is pretty dangerous so you would think he sees a lot of double coverage.  Dolan will need the patience and skill to move down his selections.  If the Johns get to him early and get him rattled it could get ugly.  Biggest performance of his life yet for this game.

* Health: will Parks and Loeffler be back? Typically in big games, we will see a significant dose of our primary RBs, although FB Molina carried a load at Target Field. J-Rob wasn't healthy in that game, and the other RBs didn't have great games.

If fumbly is in for this game then I'm happy.  :)

Less the runners than the O-line I think.  Those boys have got to control the LoS for the Toms to win.  When you beat us at Target, it was the O-line play that was demoralising.  It kept coming and we couldn't break it.  UWEC caught your boys sleeping.  They better have a good does of smelling salts before this game

Re: Dolan and the passing game, I think Slavik will be a key receiver in this one, may even see some involvement from the fullbacks and other TEs.

Re: Parks/Fumbly. You sure about that? He ran for 200+ yards and also his knee was down before the ball came out  :P :P
In the Target Field game, the o-line was decisive because we were able to pound the rock and control the clock after getting a lead. We didn't really bust any major runs, Parks/Trettel/Roberts were all in the 2-4 yards per carry realm.

If we can control the line and establish a ground game early, plus bust a few longer runs, we'll be in good shape.

Catholic and Georgetown played a series for 20 years when both were at the D-III level, but when Georgetown went I-AA non-scholarship, they dropped the series.

They did play this year, and the result was ugly.  Not sure how it benefited either team

Catholic might lose to Hamline this year if they played.  The Johnnies are absolutely capable of beating a Pioneer league team most years.

Agreed. I'm not suggesting that the game will continue after we move on, but I don't think the calculus for continuing the game changes all that much if we are Pioneer League. Honestly, the downsides to playing it OOC are less if we are Pioneer League than if we were D3 WIAC (or even staying in the MIAC where the teams couldn't avoid it aside from voting to kick one of the teams out of the conference).

And until St Thomas actually reaches whatever aspirations to be the "BC of the Midwest," UST and SJU are way more similar than they are different.
