hello guys
A story previewing the NJCU womens season, it basically explains why NJCU wanted to leave the NJAC. Instead of replacing an ineffective coach lets embarrass the school with a misguided decision to leave the conference it helped found.
NJCU
Knightstalker
I haven't checked in here in a long, long time. I wish I had. I almost missed a quote for the ages:
It's really going to ENHANCE our level of competition," said DeFazio. "Most of the time going in to those NJAC games we didn't feel we had much of a chance, but now there will be a whole different dimension to our season."
Put her on the NJCU Athletic Steering Committee. The wisdom of the quote alone warrants it.
Hello
I am really curious how WPU loses to NEWARK!! What a disapointment. Anyone else following games or just talking about NJCU - Who cares
What up people; new to d3hoops.com but have been following. my number one concern now is what is going on with MSU? It just seems as if its an entirely different team...............umm And who is the new coach????
Phil, she was on the committee, she was one of the prime proponents of moving out of the NJAC. She is one of the coaches who should be replaced in my opinion. She has not had a winning season yet in several years as the head coach. She makes poor decisions, calls timeouts at an inappropriate time. A perfect example is the NJCU at TCNJ game last season. The Knights were on a hot streak, had a couple of your bigger players sucking wind, the girl with the bad knee that was wearing the heavy brace was having a hard time, and what does she do? She calls a timeout after her girls scored, because she wanted to let them know they botched the called play. Brilliant strategy, let a team that was struggling get rested and give them a chance to substitute players. After that timeout the momentum swung to the Lions. The Lions would most likely have won the game anyway, but why give them a break.
Keep her as the assistant AD and hire a new coach for the women, Make Jonathon Greene the womens head coach or bring in an assistant from a successful program, at least they know how to win.
Whatever happened to Ebony Allen? She seemed like a good kid and great basketball player.
So TCNJ does well in Ariz. I guess they are starting to gel. Tough start against good competition. Can the Lions win the NJAC this year?
PS: Coach Fazio was simply saying that her kids would be more competitive against the new competiion. Not that the compeition would be better. They have struggled for years in the NJAC. How bout coaches husband's girl, Tara Walker at St. John's (Bill Fazio Coaches Marist). Juco Transfer doing great.
Lionwatcher, Coach DeFazio' husband is a very good high school coach, funny she can't seem to recruit some of his players. She has a very fertile recruiting ground to work in and doesn't get many good players. She has been on the job for over ten years and has not had a winning team yet. She and other coaches that have not done well need to be replaced, moving the school to another conference was never the right answer. She alienates players, she has had some good players who quit because she didn't know how to handle them, if she was a winner like coach Brown is with the men she could tell them to do it her way and they will win, but she can't. NJCU needs to replace her with a coach who can recruit the area, and who doesn't have the stench of losing all over him or her. Just the opinion of someone who has been watching the Knights play basketball for over 12 years now, both men and women.
I don't know if she is a good coach or not, I only watched her for about 4 years, but I can say that she does not have the talent. Very tough to compete with the CNJ, Rowan crowd, where the kids are clammering to go to the school. NJCU is probably last or near to last on the "I wanna go to ......" list in NJ. She maybe stale by now, understanding the tremendous uphill battle. The good local kids go away to better schools. Maybe she should go, but not solely based on W-Ls.
I hate doing this, but I see how Shields gets player of week and a bunch of hype...she is a point guard, supposed to be running a team and she is a turn over waiting to happen, I don't get it
The NJCU women have impressed me this season; they are one game over .500 and playing great defense. They are playing the same type of defense as the NJCU men play, which can be credited to the work assistant coach Jonathon Green has been doing with them. He has brought a winning attitude and a defensive mindset to the team. He also brings a strong work ethic to the court and it is starting to work. This is the best womens team we have had at NJCU in at least 13 years. Good work ladies, keep it up.
On Saturday night they held Staten Island to only 46 points in a 46-43 loss. That point total is about 27 points below Staten Islands average and Staten Islands point differential for the season before the game was about 18 points. Good defense will keep a team with limited talent in the game.
Can someone explain to me how the coaches vote for mvp,coach/year, and conf team? Dimedio as co-mvp? newark not getting coach/year? Cooper not being 1st team conf? Cooper v pride. Let the conference numbers speak for themselves.
COOPER 13.2pts, 15.5 rebounds,2.13blocks.
pride 8.8pts, 8.2 rebounds,1.53 blocks.
You would think that after last years mvp disgrace that the coaches would drop the buddy-buddy system
It is time to find out who is in... and who is out.

Again... it all starts tonight at 8:30 PM EST.
Latrice McNair from NJCU is on the team of the week, as is Mark Washington from the NJCU mens team.
I would like to have seen Latrice McNair make All-American, she led the nation in steals but probably has to improve offensively some, plus she is only a soph. Good job by the Knight Women this season, best season I can remember you having.
A little bit of coaching news (rumor) from NJCU. Last night I found out that Alice DeFazio has stepped down as the Womens Basketball coach at NJCU and assistant Ashante Timoll will be taking over the program. I consider the source reliable in this as he is an assistant coach of the womens team. I have no other details at this time, perhaps an inquiry can be made.
It is official, Ashante Timoll has been named the new NJCU womens basketball coach. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction.
Timoll
Just got back from Glassboro, saw the NJCU men and women sweep an NJAC double header from the Profs.
NJAC
NJAC Player of Week for Week Ending 12-04-05. Who selects the Player of the Week? Alicia Morris from Stockton dominated William Paterson and controlled the boards against TCNJ. Stockton defeated both opponents (whom are selected #1 and #3 in preseason poll!), and NJCU goes 1-1, beating an average at best, Rowan team. I understand its NJCU's first win in Glassboro in decades, but come on people, Morris deserved this week's selection... Individual stats are a huge part of the selection, but points isn't everything. You can;t score without the ball, and Morris crushed both Paterson and TCNJ on the glass. She had five steals and 19 points against Paterson.
They should rename the award to the NJAC High Scorer of the Week !
For last week:
Goodman against RU-N:
16 pts, 13 board and 4 assists no steals.
against Rowan:
22 points, 6 boards and 3 assists and 2 steals
Avg for the week
19 points, 9.5 boards, 3.5 assists and 1 steal
Morris:
Against WPU (probably not as good as Rowan)
19 points, 17 boards, 1 assist and 5 steals
Against TCNJ
4 points, 13 boards, 3 assists and 3 steals
Avg for the Week
11.5 points, 15 boards, 2 assists and 4 steals.
When I look at this I see Goodman having a better overall week even though the team split the games.
I'm not arguing that Goodman did not have a solid week. However, your posting that Rowan is better that William Paterson is ridiculous. People in Glassboro are claiming that this years team is the worst since the early/mid 1980's. Paterson is by far a better team, and was picked third in the NJAC pre-season poll. You are also forgetting that Stockton beat pre-season #1 TCNJ in Ewing. Let's face it, Goodman scored more points and that was why she got the votes. NJCU goes 1-1, losing to Newark. Stockton goes 2-0, and from what Ive heard, Morris domintated both opponents inside....
So rebounds are more important than points. Goodman scored more points and had more assists. Morris had more rebounds and more steals. Both were even or seperated by one for turnovers so I did not include that stat. Player of the week doesn't always go to a player from a team that wins all games. I have seen the NJAC player of the week from a team that lost two games in a week. Again both players had comparable weeks.
what's your take on the best and worst coaches of the conference??
I think you better watch out for montlair; beth o'boyle is doing good things and her players are playing hard for her.
Stockton and TCNJ will be formiddable oppenents through the season, but montclair will be building a program to contend with.
Richard Stockton senior forward Lisa Zak was named this week's NJAC player of the week. Zak scored 22 points and had 14 rebounds in Stockton's 78-53 road win over Matymount University on Sat. December 17th. Zak is 4th in the NJAC in scoring, averaging 14.6 ppg. Stockton is atop the NJAC with a 9-0 overall record, and 5-0 in the NJAC.
Kean freshman Melissa Beyruti was named this weeks NJAC Rookie of the week. She averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 steals in two games, wins over York (NY) and Hunter. Beyruti currently ranks third in the NJAC in scoring with a 14.7 average. Kean is 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the NJAC (only loss to Richard Stockton).
Richard Stockton is ranked 23rd in the nation in the week 4 poll. Nice to see a NJAC team get some early recognition.

what's your take on the best and worst coaches of the conference??
This is a no-brainer for worst in the conference, Gabby Lisella at Rowan. She took a program that was once a powerhouse, always in the NCAA's, and doing quite well once selected, and now has a program that has not even won the conference a single time, yet alone made it to the Nat'l tourney during her tenure.
Henderson from TCNJ, Fussner from Stockton have to be regarded as the best coaches in the NJAC. Sharp at Kean and Monahan at Paterson are also very good coaches. Lisella at Rowan needs some better recruiting.
NJCU got a big win last night and right now are only two games out of the playoffs. Of course I don't expect the to make the playoffs but I think they will scare a couple more teams. I think Ashante Timoll has a very strong shot at coach of the year if the Knights keep playing like they are. They have an all-conference and possibly all-american pg in McNair, a probable all NJAC forward in Kabba and possibly Goodman. They are playing good defense and are moving the ball around intelligently. Will they make the NJAC playoffs, probably not, are they a fun team to watch, yes and they are building a good foundation. I hope they keep it up.
Who do you think will win the NJAC? I think it is pretty wide open. I'd like to see the domiance of the NJAC come back. It used to be there? What does eveyone think?
Looks like Stockton and Montclair are the best 2 in the conference right now. WPU and TCNJ should be in the semi-finals as well. Stockton is the best team, but can they play to their potential the rest of the way?
Was very impressed by the class of TCNJ players, coaches, and fans at UMW tonight. Congrats to the Lions on a great year and NJAC title.
The Fredericksburg VA newspaper on the game last night between Mary Washington and TCNJ:
http://fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2006/032006/03042006/172786
TCNJ picked up a transfer to make up for the four starters they lost. From the TCNJ media guide:
Hillary Klimowicz, a 6-2 center, joins the Lions after a season at NCAA Division I St. Joseph's University, where she was tabbed the Atlantic 10 and Big Five Rookie of the Year.
Not the normal DIII transfer to say the least. She broke the single season record for blocks at St. Joes as a frosh.
Any idea of why she transfered?
No idea. Better school? ;D
USA TODAY's College Preview Section had a quote from Coach Henderson on why Klimowitz transferred to The College of New Jersey:
"She didn't want to be a Division I athlete. She didn't want to play basketball four hours a day . . . she wanted more for her college education."
It also said that TCNJ might not be on anyone's pre-season polls, but to watch out for them as the season progresses.
how do you think the conference will breakdown the good teams solid teams and the bad teams?? Hopefully Ramapo will improve this year the last two years have been so-so at best.......
Ramapo is in for a long long season. They're turing the ball over way too much and the PG is taking the majority of the shots. That's certainly not the recipe of a winning team.
TCNJ will be tough to beat, especially down the stretch, since they added Hillary K. to their roster. At some point during the season, when they need it most, she will start to dominate the league.
MSU is always a tough team, however, I don't think they have enough firepower beyond the arc to be a serious post season contender. They need others besides Warrington and Horan to be a long range threat. Then again, recent loses to great teams like Kings, Scranton and Bowdoin may give them the experience they need to take the NJAC.
How horrible has the Rowan program become, they lost to NJCU yesterday. It seems that the two programs are going in opposite directions.
You're absolutely right Knightstalker, Rowan's woman's program needs a complete overhaul. Once the cream of the NJAC, the Profs have floundered in recent years. I am surprised that Rowan, who always prided themselves on having a winning woman's program, has stuck with Lisella this long... Who knows maybe a 2-11 NJAC record and 9-16 overall record will push the AD to make a change.
It was nice to see William Paterson make it to the big dance and even get a upset win over McDaniel! Nice Job Ladies!! Thankfully Kean doesn't have to travel too far for the next round. The only remaning NJAC team left in either of the NCAAs, hopefully they can put a run together and get to the final four.
Lets get out and support the NJAC and have a big turnout at NYU this weekend. Its local, we can all get there by bus, train, taxi, car etc.
Go Cougars...

I just read the press release from NJCU, former womens basketball coach Alice DeFazio has been the named Athletic Director replacing the retired Larry Schiner.
Interim athletic director.
Article from todays Jersey Journal (http://www.nj.com/sports/jjournal/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1184307398305160.xml&coll=3)about Alice DeFazio. No relation to Laverne.

Pat, thanks for the post. you guys do a great job on the broadcasts...
Alright people we need some chatter here on Women's hoops. We have an NJAC team that has been in the top 20 in the country all season long (Kean) and nobody is talking about anything regarding NJAC women's hoops.
Lets hear what everyone thinks about the following;
1. The best and worst teams in the conference and how to fix them
2. Does Kean have the horses to win the National championship
3. What do you really think about splitting up the NJAC into 2 divisions
Speak up people...
Since the NJAC had gone back to the 2 division format, there has been a lot of chatter with some good and some bad. What do you think
Any time you split a league into divisions there's the chance that you end up with an inequitable playoff structure. But I'm not sure the NJAC playing 18 games in a full double round-robin is a great idea either, so I guess it could be worse.
When I was an NJAC follower at TCNJ (mid-90s), I much seeing each team twice. It limits what you can do non-conference wise, but it really makes for great rivalries.
Rowan and William Paterson were the top teams then, and it was a big deal (at least to me, as student media) to go up to those schools for doubleheaders, and have them come to us...
The NJAC got three womens teams in the tournament which is kind of surprising, since it is tough to get more than two teams in the tournament these days. Kean (25-3) received the automatic bid for winning the NJAC and it looks like they are hosting the 1st and 2nd rounds. The open up against Utica(17-10).
William Paterson (20-6) and TCNJ (21-6) are in the same bracket and open up against St Lawrence 23-4) and Bridgewater VA (15-13). They could meet in the regional final but it will take a few miracles along the way.
Good Luck to the NJAC women !!!
Here is the bracket

No worries.
Whats the word with the upcoming NJAC season? Congrats to College of New Jersey and Kean on some lofty pre-season rankings by various publications. Any early season previews, or updates? D3Hoops has Kean ranked #4...
Is Melissa Beyruti injured? i was rooting for Kean, DeSales, & Messiah in that order, so hopefully Melissa will be back in the lineup shortly.
Yikes, in my previous post, i really didn't indicate that my Number One school is & always will be Delaware Valley College ;) Happy New Year!!!
Congrats to TCNJ on winning the NJAC Championship over Kean. Good luck to them in the NCAA

Congrats on making it to the Sweet 16! Now the stakes are getting higher!

We finally need to cap this season off with a WIN in the National Championship!!!
We only need 4 more wins!

Sumfun......nice to know you are still aboard on WBB matters. Caught your post and today, D3hoops has posted an article on the matter. Don't expect the conference to provide you a reply. Interesting thing is that whether Amherst gets a correction to their record or not, it is ironic in that the loss to Kean in OT may have helped the team in their title run.

As a retired academic at a D3 institution, I'm chagrined to see that a history professor at Kean
may be involved in some academic dishonesty. I wonder if this stuff goes on at other D3 venues.
Hard to say, Warren, but I would certainly hope not, as we all "talk up" the true student athlete of D3 sports and the stellar academic achievements of so many of the team members. As the NCAA likes to say---athletes, in all divisions, will be going "pro" in something other than sports. I'm sure you saw first-hand that the majority of athletes at your institution learned how to manage their time to produce good grades to get a start on their life-long career.

One hopes this is an "isolated" sin. However, there are persisting stories [rumors? wish-projections?] of even worse goings-on at D3 locations, some of which, rightly or wrongly, originate from D3 coaches themselves. For what it may be worth, there is the often-voiced claim: "D3 is the least policed division in the NCAA because there is so very little money involved in it."
Rumors -- I am sure there are probably some mild shenanigans at other schools, but grade-fixing? Creating classes? Sounds like a prep school (you know what I mean, the diploma mills) or a D-I school (Minnesota?) kind of thing.
Rumor has it that the current Kean administration will be interviewing former Upsala College administrators about their recent job opening.

I think you are being a bit naive here. I am sure this happens more often at all levels than is actually reported. With the economy being what it is you may see more of this as athletic success brings in money at all levels.
Apparently Keans' Crackerjack administration has other issue's at hand besides basketball players getting credits for essentially playing basketball. From AP.com's Bob Ingle:
"...Kean University and Essex County College have received warnings from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Both were cited for failing to adequately measure student progress and for not having adequate systems to gauge institutional effectiveness. They have until March 1 to show they've corrected the problems. If they don't improve, their accreditation can be yanked."
Methinks some higher-ups at Kean will be very busy padding their resumes this summer – if they're not busy hiring legal counsel.

Upsala closed its doors a number of years ago. Phil, a former New Jersey resident, can provide more details.
Upsala closed its doors in 1995 after trying unsuccessfully for several years to boost enrollment and secure more loans and donations to keep it afloat. They had land donated to them in Sussex County – but they stayed in urban East Orange rather than move their campus. Don't know about now, but through the 60's, 70s, 80's and 90's – you didn't want to wander into East Orange for fears you wouldn't get back out. Not the safest of places. Coming from West Orange I seem to remember a favorite chant of the East Orange sports fans:
"E.O, E.O....we don't win...you don't GO"
Yeah, fun place. As much a college town as 42nd street was a family destination circa 1981.
thanks for the update; I played against them in E Orange(62-63 season) and all i remember about the game/campus is having local alumni showing up to cheer us on.
Apparently grade fixing is a time honored tradition at Kean. http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2007/04/05/kean
The 19 page lawsuit is an eye opener. Grades changed. Courses made up in September and the woman's b-ball team enrolled. A student's "F" changed to an "Incomplete" in time for a game, despite the teacher's objection. If I were the head coach at the center of this mess, I would be preparing for a change of venue. Good summer reading...
media.nj.com/njv_impact/other/19-page%20lawsuit.pdf
Now, being that Kean is a NJ State college of "higher" learning – do NJ taxpayers pay for the lawyers defending the Kean administration from these allegations?
The more I read about the current Kean administration, the more it begins to stink like yesterday's fish. Using the taxpayer's money to hire Ex-N.J. Gov. Jim McGreevey to teach Ethics is a fine move for a school with a 16% four-year graduation rate. And as we see above, that's just the tip of the iceberg...
I hope that if Kean is found guilty of the alligations that the punishment sends a message to all that this can not be tolerated in college sports. The coach needs to go, the dean needs to go and anyone involved needs to go. How can you fire the one person who is trying to do what is right?? Hope the AD gets everything he wants and then some. All Kean Bball players involved should be baned from playing
What a shame to act like this just to win a few basketball games???
BigMac,
Agree 100%..set the example for the other schools!
Plus K to you!
Very sorry i don't have a link for this, but was getting dinner tonight when i heard on Philadelphia Channel 6 News at 4 pm that Villanova Law School was being censured - why? They were caught inflating grades!!! It seems as tho it's not limited to New Jersey schools. I agree that ALL the adults involved in the Kean case need to be shown the door, but still feel badly for the students, all between the ages of 18 & 22 presumably. The PA law school students could have known that something wasn't right. Is competition that intense now with this economy, or has it always been like this. I sincerely hope that something can be worked out with the Kean athletes involved.
One of the Kean students in question allegedly went to her professor and requested her grade be changed so she could keep her basketball elligibility. My sympathy for some of the players in question only goes so far. One would hope that between the ages of 18 and 21 a degree of common sense has been aquired. That said, any administrators caught up in this should be fired and then forced to attend an ethics lecture by former NJ Governor McGreevey who is currently been paid by the university to teach his brand of pretzel logic at the taxpayers expense.
Hello Phil, doesn't Kean University have mentors and tutors in place for students who may be considered at risk? It still seems to me that a professor might feel badly about the situation, but they're still the adult. Sure, i'd panic too if i was a really good b'ball player & was getting poor grades. It seems like more & more opportunities are opening up for these athletic program grads, even if it means leaving the country. There has to be a better solution that's legal, and it should start with the school's administration & the staff.
In this situation, a college administrator changed the student's grade to ensure her eligibility ... over the professor's objections. This was not an isolated case.
I think the more you look into this...the more you will find it is going on with other sports....just the way it works. If found to be rampant, the message and punishment will, and should be, harsh!!!!! No room for this in college sports.
Other sports at Kean or other sports at other schools?
I, too, have read the lawsuit and find it appalling. If even half of the allegations are true (and it's hard to believe they can be completely false given the extensively-quoted string of emails it contains), then I agree that every adult involved should be shown the door and the AD compensated richly for what he was put through.
However, I do NOT believe (or maybe do not WANT to believe) that this behavior is widespread in DIII. This whole discussion reminds me of an experience of mine when I was much younger and a new assistant DIII coach (different school, different sport). I overheard a casual remark by the head coach that sounded like he was contemplating something that I thought might be an NCAA violation. I shared my concerns with the other assistants (one of whom was in law school - how DIII!) and we quickly decided to talk to the coach about it. After a brief conversation in which we openly shared our concerns and were assured that he meant nothing of the sort, the issue was closed. Completely. Without recriminations. Without resort to the AD. Without regard to winning or losing. That kind of approach could have been taken anywhere along the line at Kean, but the only one who appeared to care about integrity was the one who was fired.
Do I think I was part of an exceptionally high-integrity coaching staff back then? NO. I believe most of the DIII coaches and administrators I have known would have done the same thing. And by the way, that head coach we confronted went on to be inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame, and the AD went on to a successful career in DI.
Integrity is always a choice, in sports, in business, in life. It is one of the primary lessons that coaches should teach, even though some fail to understand the lesson themselves well enough to teach it. If the young women who were the beneficiaries of those behaviors saw no consequences for the adults involved, what lesson would they learn? Winning trumps education? It's only wrong if you're caught? You get a degree for playing basketball, not for learning?
That's why I love DIII sports. Played by students who love to play and coached by coaches who love to coach. Neither doing it only for the money, as it should be. Let's keep it that way! GO DIII!!
Anyone know what NCAA is doing to Kean??
BigMac,
The latest I have been able to find is here:
http://www.keantower.com/kean-imposes-self-sanctions-for-soccer-volleyball-teams-after-ncaa-violations-report-1.2623762
It appears that their troubles are not limited to women's basketball. It also appears that their appearance before the NCAA sanctions folks won't happen until next March, if I read this correctly. (There's nothing like swift justice! ;) )
This spells things out a little better:
http://www.nj.com/sports/njsports/index.ssf/2011/09/ncaa_allegations_against_kean.html#incart_mrt
So the coach is still at Kean? How about the players that had grades changed?
Yes they are. Hearing in March 2012??? Do not get it, why are they waiting till after this season??

Whole lot a crap!!!
Wow, what a mess, and such bad lessons learned from watching the actions of adult leaders. I really feel for the kids in soccer and volleyball.
Don't you love it?
"The fifth violation cited an excessive number of scholarships rewarded to student-athletes under the Dr. James E. Dorsey Scholarship program, and the school took immediate and extraordinary measures to punish itself for that lesser infraction."
Punish itself?! No administrator or coach involved in the misdeeds bears a single consequence, while every athlete who received a scholarship loses all support, and several entire teams who were hardly involved get punished?!
Can you spell "WINDOW DRESSING"? How about "INNOCENT VICTIM"?
I think I'd like to retract my earlier statement that dismissal of multiple Kean administrators and coaches would be appropriate. It's beginning to look like public execution would be a better option. ;D If it weren't for all the kids who are suffering from this, it would be hilarious. Hmmm, I'm envisioning a new Woody Allen movie - or would that be a remake of the old Keystone Kops, with the NCAA in the title role?
Can anyone tell me how Sharp is still coaching Kean?? What she did, made what Tressel for Ohio state did look like stealing a bag of 50 cent M&M's from the Ohio state bookstore and they ran him out of town. What am I missing here??
Anyone know why Naimah Clemons has not played in the last few games for Kean?
Oh boy. No. But any players missing time for Kean in any sport this year are automatically going to trigger certain thoughts.
knee injury....initially thought to be an acl but just a bone bruise....could be back this weekend
Beltsh97,
Thanks for the info. She is having a great season and hopefully continues.
So the Kean head coach, Michele Sharp was fired today. What a disgrace!!!
Can someone explain to me why she was allowed to coach this year and why their season was not suspended?
Anyone know whether they have a postseason ban this year?? I know reading the stories earlier I was pretty pissed that my school (Western Connecticut) lost to them in the tournament last year using ineligible players.
Also, why would they fire the coach now?? She should've been fired as soon as the story broke which was in early July, why would you fire her know midway through the season?? The whole situation seems screwed up.
I agree w/ 7 express. The whole thing smells. Why now?
Unfortunately this may affect players who thought they were playing for a great WBB program.
All the games they played last year and this year(15-3) should be disqualified.
I see they had a rematch w/ Amherst this week and lost, but at least one of the cheaters from Kean played. How are they even ranked(19th)?
They team should be disqualified and their season suspended. What a disgrace!!
ABSOLUTELY NOT FAIR to lay blame on the student athletes when adults cooked this whole mess up. Heck if i was a great basketball player, and thought of this opportunity to play as a chance to move on to post college b'ball, you better believe i jump at that - it's always up to the adults and obviously these kids were let down.
MVP,
"I see they had a rematch w/ Amherst this week and lost, but at least one of the cheaters from Kean(Naimah Clemons) played".
Very harsh words for a student athlete. You know this as fact? Please keep the players out of this. It is the administration who is a fault here firing the former AD and now the coach as scapegoats. It is tragic for the athletes and the school.
So what are you saying ? That the players knowingly involved w/ "grade fixing" are not responsible. The players were named in the press release from July 2011.
Simply stating that whenever or whatever the student athletes knew, it would totally be up to the adults in the administration to have either not started it to begin with, or someone (adult) should step up and say "This is Very Wrong". Which is exactly what the Director of Athletics apparently did, and was fired. The kids didn't do that. It seems it's always easier to blame the most vulnerable.
Quote... firing the former AD and now the coach as scapegoats
From what I can see, firing the AD could be characterized as scapegoating, but many of the allegations involved the (apparently) willing collusion of the coach and some administrators, so firing the coach is probably better characterized as "overdue" than scapegoating. It is clearly the responsibility of any head coach in any sport to know what is acceptable and what is not concerning NCAA complaince, and if even half of the allegations are true, then there was more than enough ADULT misbehavior to warrant corrective action. To me, the real scapegoats were the athletes who lost scholarships without due process last spring because the the school wanted to show public remorse for a minor infraction.
That said, I don't think it is right for there to be NO consequences for ANY athlete, either. Specifically, IF an athlete was ineligible, of course the team should forfeit games, etc. and the athlete could individually lose eligibility, scholarship money, etc. as provided for in the policies of the NCAA and the school. And I would expect that to be more severe if the athlete willingly cheated or otherwise took inappropriate action of their own accord. However, I don't know the individual actions of any Kean athlete, so I don't have an opinion on what should be done to the students.
As to why nothing else has been done to this program, that is probably because the NCAA review is not scheduled until March. I would hope something comes of that - and then we can all draw more informed opinions.
Hey I agree that it appears the administration and coach Sharp are primarily responsible for this disgrace of Kean University and D3 women's basketball. How long has this been going on?
How many years/ seasons must now be followed with an asterisk***
The NCAA is also investigating infractions involving women's soccer, men's soccer, and women's volleyball . Last year Kean banned post season play and implemented self imposed penalties in wake of the allegations and pending sanctions from the NCAA in March 2012.
The real losers in this story are all the players and aspiring prospects for the Kean women's basketball team that were not not involved in any violations. Their dream was to play for a legitimate D3 powerhouse.
Why was coach Sharp allowed to coach this season? Why was she fired today?
Are there ineligible players on the 2012 roster?

I know for a FACT that every current student-athlete that is currently on the women's basketball roster is eligible. Any issues in regards to the notice of allegations that could have affected eligibility have been resolved with the NCAA prior to the season.
what a joke....NJAC all-conference came out today and Naimah Clemons from Kean left off the all-conference 1st team. In conference games she only averaged 24.9 points, 7.8 rebs and almost 4 steals a game
Pretty weak argument if you don't tell us who she should have replaced on the first team and why.
Probably should have replaced Jessica Imhof from TCNJ or Kendra Johnson from Newark given the fact that they finished 12-1 in conference beating both those teams 1 time each. Imhof averaged 11.8 ppg and 5 reb per game. Johnson averaged 15 and 3 rebs. I'm not trying to take anything away from either of those players but I think its pretty evident that Clemons was more than deserving of a first team selection and probably got left off because of other coaches feelings towards the Kean program which is understandable. However, those feelings shouldnt be taken out on a player
TCNJ also beat Kean so let's not debate based on who beat whom...
It's a fact that the NJAC awards Seniors when it comes to All Conference selections. It happens every year in every sport. The NJAC rewards seniors and there always seems to be a complaint about the process in the D3 Hoops and D3 Football blogs – but it happens in every NJAC sport.
In Clemons case, she's a Junior and Imhof and Johnson are seniors. Frankly, this shouldn't be too surprising to anybody who follows the NJAC.
...but then there's the scandal at Kean which is only going to get worse. Unfortunately, Clemons is knee deep in it since it was her grades which were changed last year so she could maintain a mandatory 2.0 GPA. Her grade was changed from F to an "Inc," and then back to an F. After she sat out one game and two practices, her grade in another class was upgraded from C-plus to B-plus. The latter maneuver allowed the player to suit up against top-ranked Amherst, and she torched them for 28 points in an 85-82 Kean victory last season. I suppose you could say that Miss Clemons was a victim in all this, but if you read the wrongful termination suit by Kean's former athletic director, Clemons went directly to her professor – asking that her grade be changed to play basketball. Someone other than the professor made that request happen.
Methinks the coaches knew exactly what they were doing when it came time to select an All Conference team.
Phil,
Evidently you are in the know regarding all the turmoil involving Kean so I will leave that alone. Regarding the slighting of Miss Clemons. She was a first team selection last year, I assume chosen over some seniors. You must admit her stats are very impressive.
NJAC coaches may be a bit embarassed if Clemons is chosen on some All-American teams instead of Miss Imhof or Miss Johnson.
Just Mytwocents
Look at the "balance" of the All Conference selections. First team has 5 slots and four seniors. All together there are 16 All Conference selections and 10 of those are seniors. In addition, every team has to have one player represented. So putting together an All NJAC team isn't exactly a science. This has always been the way of the NJAC in every sport.
I also sincerely doubt any coach in the NJAC will be the least bit embarrassed should Clemons land on an All American team.
Punishment was handed down today.
http://www.d3sports.com/notables/2012/04/kean-punishment-handed-down
Pat, after reading all the charges and the findings, I thought Kean's women's bball team would get a multiple season post-season ban – or even a season or two without a program. Next comes the former AD's lawsuit against the university...
What a disgrace for the Kean WBB program. More to come.
Kean picks Washington and Lee's Mandy King to be their next head coach. Coach King turned around the performance of the W&L program and led them out of a dark period to be a very credible program. She is a great coach and W&L will miss her greatly.
Why exactly she chose to step into the Kean debacle is beyond me. There has been a recruiting drop off at W&L in the last few years, possibly indicative of a desire to leave or an inability to get the kids she wanted through admissions. If I was still at school and a student journalist, I'd be interested to hear why she was willing to try and pick up Kean's pieces.
All that being said, she is an excellent coach with a flawless ethical reputation and a very good repoir with her student-athletes. Kean, if it can overcome its stigma, should do very well with her in charge.
Good luck Coach King, and thanks for all the hard work over the last decade or so at W&L.

That's why Kean chose her. Any misstep by KU over the next few years and the NCAA will come down hard. A sterling reputation at an excellent private school and no skeletons in the closet comes first – and on-court performance second. As to why she would take this job is anyone's guess. There's at least two lawsuits stemming from this mess ... a possible loss of the University's Middle States Accreditation ... budget woes ... and 94% of faculty members at Kean University voted no confidence in the university's Board of Trustees this week saying they had lost faith in the board and the President. Yeah, fun place to be right now. Have a good time on the recruiting trail.
Congraulations to the Lady Red Hawks. 29-1 is not to shaby. I started to follow the girls on line this year. I never went to a game or posted because I would hex them. They are a young team and the program should be good for many years. Even shooting 38% and -0- fer from 3, we had the lead with 10 minutes left. Good luck to CNU, they will need it against DePauw. I think we will see DePauw and Hope in the finals. Thank you Lady Red Hawks for an enjoyable season.
We've released our All-Americans. Congratulations to Melissa Tobie.
http://www.d3hoops.com/notables/2013/03/womens-all-americans
Congrats to Melissa and we have her for (2) more years. Awsome !!!
Tough loss for MSU against Vassar last night....It seems the Red Hawks are at an extreme disadvantage this season without S. Brown as the rebounding is now on the sole shoulders of Tobie; not a realistic expectation as Melissa already does so much for the team. It would be interesting to know the real reason Brown left a great program and defected to FDU.

What is going on in the NJAC this year? The NJCU women are not the bottom feeders, RU Camden is and both the NJCU men and women could make the conference tournament this year for the first time that I can recall. It makes my head hurt thinking about it.

It would be interesting to know the real reason Brown left a great program and defected to FDU.
In hindsight, it would seem she left to win a national championship while getting a private school education.
I asked Shalette Brown why she left Montclair and she explained it was for academic reasons. From our feature on her:
http://www.d3hoops.com/playoffs/women/2014/brown-final-piece-for-fdu-florham
As Brown explains, she enjoyed playing basketball at Montclair, but "for me it was about the academics and being a student athlete." She wasn't able to get into the communications major right away at Montclair and didn't want to extend her college career another year. So she looked at transferring to FDU-Florham.
As I understand it, she had a choice of staying at Montclair, trying to get in the communications major and extending her schooling by a year or transferring to FDU, entering its communications major and finishing her schooling in four years.
Good for her. In the end, she transferred for all the right reasons ... and I'd say it worked out pretty well for her!
Despite technical problems over the last few weeks, Sunday's edition of Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com) has not been derailed by Mother Nature's rath! Three-feet of snow and still we will get two-hours of the show all thanks to that wonderful home studio.

Alright, folks -- the NCAA's first women's basketball regional rankings are posted. Check out the full list from D3hoops.com:
http://www.d3blogs.com/d3hoops/2016/02/10/first-2016-regional-rankings-released-today/
We are reporting via the Hoopsville twitter account that Stockton AD Lonnie Folks has been let go. We are have learned that there has been tension between some of the coaches and Folks for sometime. It may have risen up to the President's office, but we cannot be sure. Official decision has not been announced that we are aware of including who the interim AD is, though Folks' name is off the website as of late this afternoon and Jon Heck has been moved up to the top of the staff list.
Believe it or not... there is just one more month remaining in Division III basketball's regular season. In other words, time is running out for teams looking to play in March. One month from today, most conference champions will be crowned and the conversation will be who may be in and will be out of the NCAA championship tournament.
So as the season head's for the home stretch, what programs will we be talking about in a month? Who may emerge from some tight conferences races to prove they are the best?
Sunday night on Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com), Dave hopes to turn the spotlight on a few programs others may not be paying attention to as much. Tufts' men's program is seperating themselves from the rest of the NESCAC, Elmhurst women are making the CCIW race more interesting than expected, LeTourneau men have turned their program around and now lead their ASC division, and Montclair State women have a battle on their hands in the NJAC.
Also on Sunday night, we head to the WBCA Center Court and talk to one of the up and coming women's basketball coaches. Already honored for his success at a young age, what has Alex Richay done to turn the Oglethorpe program around?
Dave will also preview the upcoming annual Hoopsville Marathon and give an update to this season's fundraising efforts.
Tune in starting at 7:00 PM ET to watch the show live here: http://www.d3hoops.com/hoopsville/archives/2016-17/jan29 (or via Facebook Live). If you miss any of it, you can watch the show On Demand or listen (download) the podcast.
Don't forget to contribute to the new "Hoopsville Mailbag" segment. Email questions you may have to hoopsville@d3hoops.com. Dave will answer them tonight or on a future show.
Guests schedule (in order of appearance):
- Bob Sheldon, No. 4 Tufts men's coach
- Tethanie Carriollo, Elmhurst women's coach
- Alex Richay, Oglethorpe women's coach (WBCA Center Court)
- Dan Miller, LeTourneau men's coach
- Karin Harvey, No. 18 Montclair State women's coach

The season is a week old. There have been some interest results and certainly some early upsets, but the bulk of games really gets going in earnest now.
On Thursday's episode of Hoopsville (http://www.d3hoopsville.com), Dave chats with a couple of programs who are getting some national attention, but not everyone may know who they are. One features an All-America selection. The other have plenty of options to give any defense fits.
But not all the news is positive, Dave also breaks down the Fitchburg State incident (https://www.d3hoops.com/notables/2018/11/fitchburg-state-kewan-platt-decks-opponent-ejected-suspended) in their game against Nichols.
Thursday's show also features Karin Harvey, Montclair State women's coach and chair of the National Women's Basketball Committee. Harvey is entering her third year on the national committee, but first as chair. The conversation will encompass what, if any, changes fans and others should expect from the Regional Ranking and national tournament process.
Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the WBCA/NABC Studio. Thursday's edition will air starting at 7:00 pm.m ET here: http://bit.ly/2qNG3Ag.

If you are a Top 25 team, or a conference leader, every team now thinks you can be beaten. Each night in Division III basketball we are seeing top teams take losses because even the best can't avoid even an okay team knocking them off.
Sunday on Hoopsville, we continue to talk about what seems like nightly upsets in DIII. Whether it's undefeateds who are no more or unexpected squads rising to the top of conference races. There just isn't any "normal" nights in the game anymore.

Time for a marathon!
Thursday, Hoopsville will be on the air for at least nine hours in the 7th Annual Hoopsville Marathon Show.
This year's show will feature coaches, administrators, and many others around Division III to give us a sense of the season to date and what is to come. There is only a month or so left in the regular season, so there is plenty to talk about.
For more information about the show and its impact, click here.
The show's guest list is below with a rough idea of when they were scheduled to appear during the live show.
The marathon is also a chance to fundraise of the show. Many fans of Hoopsville ask often how they can give to the program so we can continue doing our work into the future. In the first few years of the Marathon, the fundraising side was an important aspect. However in the last few years, we have shyed away from fundraising as we tried to find other means to financially run the program. After requests from many, we are do have a few ways fans can contribute.
Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the WBCA/NABC Studio. You can watch the entire Marathon show LIVE in the video player above. We will effort to turn around podcast episodes of the entire show. They will be available to the right (after the show is off the air).
Guests appear on the Hoopsville Hotline presented by BlueFrame Technology.
And don't forget to interact with the Dave and guests. You can use the social media option to the right and even email (dave.mchugh@d3sports.com) questions to the show.
When it comes to the game of basketball, we love celebrating not only the student-athletes in Division III, but also those who help carry the game forward sometimes outside of the spotlight.
Sunday on Hoopsville, we celebrate those who have made the game of basketball, especially at DIII, so great. Coaches who continue to excel in different parts of the country and programs who play for more than just themselves.

There is just one week left in the regular season and with it comes conference chaos.
Some conference tournaments are already underway and have seen upsets. It will be the theme of the week. With conference tournaments come upsets. Those upsets will cause teams on the NCAA tournament bubble to have their hopes burst. And there will be some Cinderellas who will capture the headlines.
Could it be any more fun?
Sunday on Hoopsville (starting at a special earlier time) we chat with a few programs who are either looking to avoid the conference chaos or be a part of it.
Plus, there is changes coming to the way we look at the current regional structure. How the process started and flowed for the last 18 or more months. And what you can expect it all to look in the future.

Conference champions crowned, upsets, and those who's hopes to still playing will see their bubbles burst.
