Interesting to look back a page at people's predictions vs the coaches' poll. Seems there is mostly agreement about RMC, W&L and HSC at the top and GC, BC, and E&H at the bottom, with FC and SU in the middle.

I think it's going to be another difficult season where every week you have to play your best. W&L was E&H's only conference win last season. Shenandoah torched RMC for 50+ points, while W&L needed two picks late to eek past the Jackets 17-14. H-SC didn't win a conference game by more than 10 points, but lost two conference games by 28 or more. You have to show every week because the gap from top to bottom, while it is there, isn't real steep.

That narrow gap is what makes it interesting. I've been watching RMC games online for the past three or four years and it has seemed to me that they have been consistently vulnerable on pass defense.

no real surprises in coaches poll. Teams are bunched up but I do think W&L and RMC are a cut above the rest going into the season but I also think HSC, FC, SU and GC can make a run. Should be an entertaining year.

I'm confused about something. Most predictions have WL at the top of the ODAC. Certainly they are a quality choice. But why do most of you guys feel they will be so good?  I keep reading about who's returning yet only 5 all ODAC return. I know the RB is a beast.  But one guy does not make a team.  They lost 2 all-ODAC linebackers, their starting QB and a generational coach. This is not a slam on WL   I'm wondering what I'm missing. Help me out.

1) W&L returns 18 of the 22 starters (I think). If that # is not correct it is close
2) W&L runs an offense that only RMC has been able to defend. No other ODAC team has a clue how to slow it down.
3) #2 leads to TOP advantage that limits # of offensive opportunities for opponent
4) W&L plays tremendous defense - example : held RMC to 14 points last year/HSC allowed RMC 56 points

There are others. Hope this helps.

W&L also plays deep into the roster. Yes, losing your senior starters hurts everyone, but with a small roster, and really only recruited kids on the roster, there is a lot of experience filling those holes, even if it isn't starting experience. When you start with 25 young men as first years, and you still have 17 or 18 of them as seniors, it's generally because they've all played. A lot. Injuries kill W&L, but graduation is less of a problem.

W&L has both QBs back, and they are both very good within the system. They have several running backs coming back, including Breece. The lines are loaded with guys who have played a lot. There is some question about linebackers and parts of the secondary, but even there you won't have many new names, just new names for the first snap.

The talent at W&L this year is some of the best I've seen. The schedule is ridiculously favorable. That makes the new coaching staff the only real wildcard, but even there, it's not like they brought in a new system. The HC and DC have been in this system for a long time. One co-OC is new this year, the other has been around W&L since before the option became the dominant offensive system. Continuity will be the name of the game. Now, whether the staff can make the tweaks that were so successful both pre and in-game that Coach Abell made, will be interesting. But generally, this staff is about the best way to keep what Coach Abell had rolling, rolling.

12 starters back. 6 of which were all-ODAC.  I'd say most ODAC teams have mostly recruited kids coming back and many have 17/18 seniors. Seniors that don't play typically are not sticking around at any school. No one can assume because they have WL on their helmet their backups are automatically as talented as the players they replaced.

From ODAC returning all ODAC players

WL 6
RMC 10
HSC 5
SU 8
GC 4
EH 8
BC 2
FC 5 (all USAS)

As for no team being able to stop their offense- that's been true. But Abell was the best coach WL ever had, to assume there will be little to no drop off in production or adjustments is asking a whole lot from a guy that was a position coach before taking the reins.

Their defense has been good but they lose 3 linebackers 1  all-ODAC and 1 DPOY. They also lose their all ODAC strong safety.  That's tough to replace.

It is mid August, we will all know how it plays out soon enough.  I'm not buying WL until I have seen a few games. Again I'm not saying they're going to be a bad team. But with the loses (players and coaches) I wouldn't be surprised if they slip. A little slip is the difference between being first and fifth in the ODAC.

HSC scrimmages Greensboro College this Saturday in Richmond at the Redskins training facility. Gates open at 11:30; beer trucks/food trucks/games for kids, etc.
1,500 people attended last year and expecting a larger crowd this year. Tickets can be purchased at the gate. If you are a Tiger fan and in town, come out and have a great day.
