sliac women's tournament is on.  higher seeds all won last night

#1 webster over #8 bc 98-47
#2 westmin over #7 iwu 85-69
#3 gu over #6 fu 81-54
#4 ec over #5 spalding 85-58

ec travels to st. louis to take on webster in a rematch of a game this past monday where the gorlocks won 91-82.  ec led that game going into the 4th quarter.  i really like this ec team, good veteran leadership with a balanced attack, great post play from olivia falls and kennedy jackson, and an aggressive defensive style under new coach jaylynn stewart.  since the men's team was frozen out of the conference tourney, it's up to the women to carry the banner for red devils hoops!

Eureka at Greenville tonight... interesting

Greenville.. I perceive a little better shooting than they've had in the past, but not yet able to put the defensive pressure on at a level they have achieved in the past

Eureka... 2 scorers and some good role players..

I just feel that Greenville comes out on top tonight... though I'm wrong more often than right

BUT the team everyone should be talking about is Blackburn... has anyone noticed they are 5-1 in conference??!!   And look at their season... start 1-1 with easy win over Iowa Wez, big  loss to Eureka... I figure that's typical.. BC will finish lower level in standings.

THEN!!!
5 point win at Fontbonne who was the predicted Conference winner
1 point win at Westminster
Double OT win over Webster
OT win over Spalding

Any team in the conference can beat this team, but they haven't let it happen... Hats Off!!!!

i've only seen them against ec, and ec handled them pretty easily.  blackburn was a bad shooting team that night and i wasn't very impressed with them.  i didn't watch any of the other games, see they shot poorly in those last three wins, yet westmin web and spalding all shot worse.  hope, is this a matter of blackburn being decent or those three teams not being as good as expected.

i'm also taking ec to win handily on the road tonight at greenville.  hosea and company can handle the pressure and just too much scoring prowess on the back end of the press for greenville to keep up.

ec vs. fontbonne cancelled due to covid protocols within fontbonne's program.

ian milsteadt wins third straight sliac player of the week.  not bad for a guy who wasn't even on the watch list.

greenville 12-4 locks up two seed with one win over either bc or ec

ec, fontbonne, blackburn all 10-6 likely batting for three and four seeds

fontbonne easiest path home against iowa wes and road against prin

ec goes at webster and home against greenville

blackburn home against greenville and road against spalding

a strong scenario to me is 1. webster 16-2 2. greenville 13-5  3. fontbonne 12-6  4.  ec and bc tied at 11-7

what is the second tiebreaker after head-to-head?

Spalding beats Eureka... at Eureka.....defies all logic

gotta love the SLIAC

apply occam's razor here: spalding made shots in the second half, ec didn't.  1-9 from three down the stretch.  throw out the record and spalding is at least a physical defensive team, able to force ec into some tough shots they just couldn't convert.  good ball movement got spalding some looks, and  tribble and montgomery stepped up and made plays, credit them.

bad home loss to be sure, but still early and conference race is wide open.  saturday home against webster becomes all the more important now, have to hold serve and stay on winning side of conference ledger.

another major factor was Spalding's performance from the line... 19/21....and 12/12 in the last minute and a half..... that gave EC no chance...

yes it was, 14/14 in the second half.

Looking for an answer about game tying shot at end of regulation in Font-Eureka game.  Maybe Eurekared came down???

How in the heck does Eureka lose to Fontbonne?  Perhaps the full court pressure the Griffs used vs Spalding with great success also impacted Eureka...EC 20 some turnovers...

And in first place alone....  going about their business... Webster.....come on, they can't win without the big guy, right??!!

i did not get to see this one...didn't go down and no video feed (c'mon!).  the turnover differential couldn't have helped.

some good news, jordan dehm has come roaring back full strength, put up 34/11.  the webster game at home this coming saturday will be huge; important to cool them down and defend the home court.  that should be a good one.

i'll take cornell easily by double digits. no way they lose at home to a really, really bad iwu team.

A few thoughts on the above:

- We obviously have a sample size issue here, but this is just for fun.
- Only two of the above teams benefit from the we played GU bump and Webster, who has, is still 7th.
- GU had the 4th most points in their game on Saturday (less than EU, Blackburn and Fontbonne), with Webster and Prin in the mid-90s.
- In 2018-19 for SLIAC play only two teams averaged more than 83.4 PPG.  It appears that the league has decided that it is time to just play FAST!
- But Why?
Have SLIAC coaches suddenly decided that playing shot clock milking possessions is not en vogue anymore?  Are the types of players which the league can recruit more in line with fast play?  That would fly in the face of the old adage which says if you have the "better athletes, more possessions."  Is there an effort to recruit kids that will better compete against GU and EU and thereby the league is just getting faster.

I am not sure any of this is relevant.  I am glad that when I tune into a SLIAC game, I am not watching any 96 second possessions.

-more and more college teams are playing fast tempo, it's harder and harder to slow the game down as a strategy.

-sliac teams invariably play teams who are superior to them in non-conference.  they are often at the mercy of the tempo of those teams.  that might be skewing numbers early.

-most of the metrics say up tempo is a superior way to play.  "shoot it before you turn it over"  this philosophy is trickling down to all levels of the game.

Eureka @ Blackburn - Eureka -3.5
The World Famous Beverdome is not an easy place to play so I am giving Blackburn a better shot than they deserve on paper.

And while Eureka is clearly the better team on paper, this one could be interesting for a couple of reasons:
- extra adrenaline to start a conf season,
- tiny, albeit world famous, gym,
- good/loud crowd
- lots of dribble attacks and subsequent contact
- athletic kids playing uptempo

I think that this comes down to the final few possessions, but Eureka pulls it out.

i suspect ec has too much offensive firepower for this iteration of the beavers.  i predict a relatively easy double digit victory, even in that breadbox gym.

It looks like they are playing a bit slower even compared to themselves.  I know that Greenville has taken it to warp speed the past few years, so everything appears slower in comparison.  Last year Greenville took 112.6 shots p/g and 57.6 3's p/g.  So far, Grinnell took 75 shots in their most recent game and 87 in their first.  100 shots (and 50 3's) is a standard "System" goal so that causes me to wonder if they are slowing it down or if they have some other issues going on.  Last year Grinnell averaged 89.7 shots p/g and 57 3's p/g.

I also have noticed that Grinnell has turned it over a lot for a system team in the first two games (28 v. Coe and 23 v. Wartburg).  In fact they lost the turnover battle by 7 in the Coe game.  I suspect that because turnovers forced/margin are also system goals, a System team that loses the TO battle in a game by 7, could move a coach to potentially modify the approach.  It will be interesting to see what happens tonight.

Well... Grinnell played plenty fast tonight.  Likely had something to do with EU's willingness to run with them.  Grinned took 100+shots and 60+ 3's meeting traditional system goals.  They failed to force a system appropriate amount of turnovers.  Credit to Eureka for forcing GU into many contested looks.    GU looked pretty uncomfortable shooting generally.  GU's shooting woes persisted tonight.  Good win for Eureka especially in light of the foul trouble for Bennington and Dehm's DNP.

i don't know what happened at wartburg, but grinnell looked very much like old grinnell last night.  it was system basketball.  one small difference was overloading and trying to get simms into one-on-one situations at times.  they also have a lot of length, multiple 6-7 and 6-8 (on paper anyway) and will try and defend the rim, not many conceded layups.  i'd put them on par with greenville teams of recent years and think they'll do damage in the midwest conf. this year.

ec...looked incredible.  no surprise ec willing to run with grinnell, in constant attack mode.  so many good performances--bennington got his 1000th point and some hard dunks.  really impressed with millsteadt again; he's a heady player and very savvy and dangerous in transition and if he gets you one-on-one.  jalen hosea is really developing, super quick with the ball, matches anybody step for step defensively.  banks played a great game, rebounding machine, blocks shots, will be major asset in sliac play. when dehm gets back this team is set to roll through the sliac.

In Millikin's exhibition vs. Bradley, Zach & Calvin Fisher both participated. Against Chicago, Calvin played, but Zach didn't. In the Rhodes Tournament over the weekend, neither played a minute against either Rhodes or LeTourneau. They both remain on the roster.
Anyone have any info as to what accounts for their missing in action? Being Millikin's two best players, it seems odd not to see them on the floor.

i was wondering about this, also.  huge blow to millikin if they're out.  injury situation?

in other news, exciting slate tomorrow night in the big E.  two system teams come to town, st. mary of the woods take on the ec women, followed by the *original* system pioneers...well, the pioneers of grinnell.  grinnell comes in 0-2 against coe and wartburg, only managed 74 pts in the wc game.

i really think this ec squad will control this one.  they have all the pieces, outstanding and quick ballhandlers in hosea and bennington, fast paced attack-style offense, bigs who can finish at the rim.  looking for big numbers out of jaedon banks and bennington dunking on the back end of the grinnell trapping press.  should be a fun night of hoops.
