Almost forgot there was a game yesterday. Looks like it was an impressive showing from Stout, a team that won just two games all last year.

Stout did lose 20-35, but were only down 13-14 going into the 4th quarter. Not too bad against a solid program like Bethel.

Screaming Eagles: Good job posting the Tribune articles on the Eagles. They do a pretty good job covering the team and we are fortunate that they make the effort. BTW, I share your apparent concern about the size of our D-line. You can't give up a lot of size in the middle of the line and expect to stop the run. I have expressed my concern to coach Dettwiler, but he doesn't agree, and appears to think he knows more about it than I do. I hope he is right. It is time to get this program back on track.

Thanks Brian.  I won't claim to know more than Coach D, but I can't imagine having a 215 pound d-end and a 190 pound linebacker on the field will be any more successful this year than past ones.  There seems to be a pretty strong blueprint of what has been successful in D3 football if you look at the purple powers and even back to old school UWL success.  Big lines, strong run game, and physicality.  We've been trying to win with quickness and a more "swarming" mentality but it hasn't worked.  Maybe this year is the year.

Last year the WIAC increased the allowable football roster size to 105.  This year they have dropped the limit all together.  However as public institutions we are still required to stay within Title IX requirements so you won't be seeing any Mount Union size rosters.  It was anticipated that numbers would be in the 105-110 range.

Title IX applies to any school accepting Federal Funds, which includes tuition loans and grants. UMU is subject to Title IX requirements. I can't think, off the top of my head, of any school in the NCAA playing football except Wabash and Hampden-Sydney that wouldn't be subject to them. If the WIAC jettisoned it's roster limits the roster sizes are still limited by budgets, of which Title IX is a factor, but it is a factor for almost every other school as well.

Hillsdale College (D-II) accepts no federal money and is not required to adhere to Title IX.

This doesn't convince me that Brady isn't a cheat.   I'd be a lot more convinced if Brady hadn't coincidentally switched cell phones when it became apparent the NFL was interested in seeing it.

One last point and then I'm done (thanks for your patience). On the phone, Brady had no obligation to turn it over. There was no mechanism, other than 'pretty please', that the NFl could use to get it.  What do you suppose is on that phone other than ball pressure messages?  Financial or investment advice with his accountant(s)?  Evidence of him cheating on Geisel?  With a man?  Off color jokes?  Pictures of midget porn he'd texted with friends?

And what are the odds that the NFL would have kept that non-relevant information private?  My guess, it wasn't inflate-gate information he was intent on keeping out if NFL hands.

That was just a Game of Thrones episode.

During a morning interview on the Lead Balloon Show, Coach D used the word "explosive" a few times to describe how he hopes his team plays this year... We'll see how that goes during the season...
Tonight they are playing a Luther College team for the first time in about 50 or so years, which is surprising, since they are rather close in proximity... They threw the ball like 60 times total all of last year, and Coach D likens the Luther veer-like offense to that of UWRF in years past... Need to keep everybody hydrated tonight at the Vet...

As a dig, er, as an aside, while the traffic flows past my humble abode today during move in day, I hope all the UWL youngsters moving into the River City here are able to find their student center... The one with a brand new sign in front of it on State Street. Of course, the sign is totally hidden by some plants. Ha.

Yep. Grove City is another.

State schools are definitely more attuned to Title IX. Perhaps someone who works in administration for one can say more about why.

SJU? Unless they are combined with CSB for Title IX considerations.

Methinks if UW-L had 270-pound D linemen, Coach D would be singing the praises of having a large, physical line. He has to go with his best players that he has and then back them.

Sitting here watching football all day wishing I was at Perkins instead. Hard to take the first week being a bye week. Next week should give the secondary plenty of experience with Belhaven having more than 70 pass attempts against Milsaps. Hoping we get to see the twos and threes in the second half.

palum

Platteville rolled over Buena Vista today. 49 to 13.  The offensive line was outstanding Kelly had all day to throw and  Fish their starting RB averaged over 8 yards per carry.  Kelly has two tall targets in Martin 6'3" & Munda 6'4". After Buena Vista scored on its first procession the defense stepped up and shut down Buena Vista until a 4th quarter TD against the reserves.  Buena Vista's QB will have nightmares about Platteville's Andrew Robinson he was in his face all day forcing one bad throw after another including one  int.  All in all a good start Platteville's real nonconference test will come in 2 weeks when  North Central comes to Platteville.

Goodness gracious Point. 44 points and 489 yards allowed in 2 1/2 qtrs? Yikes!
