Not long to start of the hoops season... good time to start up a new topic for the SAA.

Oglethorpe named new assistant yesterday.  Alex Richey 2011 graduate.  One of Oglethorpes three 1000 point scores from that class.

All assistants are Oglethorpe graduates.

Are these d3 schools getting a payout from the D1 schools like the FCS schools do in football when they play FBS schools?

Not that I know; exhibition games are more like the Jamboree system in high school football.   For the D1 programs, you get an opportunity to evaluate your team in conditions closer to what you'll see in season.

You do see some cases where a D1 program will play teams in the other classifications during the regular season when they need to fill in holes in their schedule.   In those cases, those games are treated as if they were any other regular season game and there may some horse trading amongst ADs that goes on there.   Coaches avoid this type of scheduling as much as they can due to the emphasis at the D1 level on strength of schedule.

Pat Coleman

No, you definitely get a guarantee for these games. That's one of the major attractions for D3 teams.

Pat:  Is that across the board?  For example,  Hendrix is playing Central Arkansas this week.  Would they get the same amount of money as someone like Sewanee or Oglethorpe who are doing the 4-6 hour bus ride down to Macon to play an exhibition game against Mercer?

Pat Coleman

There's no set fee, definitely up for negotiation. But I'm not aware of a D-III/D-I matchup in the D-I gym that hasn't included a guarantee.

Back when the Trinity women were coached by a former UTexas player, they'd go up the road to Austin, get pummelled, and use the money to pay for travel to a couple of tournaments.

Opening weekend of the season with a bunch of tournament and OOC games on the schedule.

Of personal interest,  Sewanee is in a tournament in St. Louis, Huntingdon is coming up to B'ham to take on B-SC, and Berry travels the short distance to take on LaGrange.

What sounds interesting to y'all in this weekend's slate of games?

Late getting into the basketball groove this season.

Centre got a nice win last night against its Lexington rival, Transylvania @ home.  Transy has kind of owned the Colonels in recent seasons.

Coach Mason has a nice blend of veterans and freshmen suiting up.  Think the early season will be the right medicine to get the team prepared to compete effectively in the SAA.  Centre gets one early league test Saturday afternoon on the road @ Sewanee.

Looking forward to following the new league and getting familiar with Berry College.

Going to be interesting on Saturday as we come into that game with Centre on 3-game win streak.  Hoping to catch part of that game in-between other things happening on the Mountain.   And Oglethorpe put a thumping on Berry this evening to go to 5-0 on the season.    Fun times...

Colonels defeat Miami-Middletown today 73-48 today @ the Thomas More tournament. Centre is now 6-2 with another tournament game Saturday to finish the 2012 portion of the season. Next weekend the serious SAA piece of the schedule kicks off with Centre traveling to Millsaps & Birmingham-Southern. Happy New Year SAA Fans!
