Centre gets a more favorable environment today to play Sewanee.  However, the Colonels are still not a proven commodity on the homecourt in that last weekend Birmingham Southern came into Danville & throttled them.  After dropping 2 of its first 3 SAA games, Centre needs to dig deep and quickly to get things on track for another title run.  A team that really defends well on the perimeter against Centre can be a recipe for hanging an "L" on this squad. Is that team Sewanee?  We'll know later today.

Got to see Centre play Rhodes on Friday night. Colonels seemed to be lacking a gear as Rhodes handed them a 74-67 loss. I was impressed with how the Rhodes guards controlled tempo most of the night. Rhodes PG & senior Luke Collins was a major factor. He's grown as a player as he now recognizes his limitations & plays to his strengths with lots of gumption. Centre played mostly into Collins hands throughout the evening. This young man may be the MIP of the league this season.

Just noted that both Rhodes and Centre have won their Sunday games. Rhodes stays undefeated in SAA play while Centre has lots of catching up to do at a measly 3-3.

Centre has rebounded from a tough stretch early in conference play.  After starting 2-3, the Colonels have reeled off 8 straight wins allowing them to tie Rhodes at the top with identical 10-3 records.  The team's success has been predicated on improved guard play & strong upper class leadership from senior Josh Karsner and junior Blake Scinta.  Scinta had a big performance on the road in last night's win @ Berry with 26 points, 10 rebounds & 4 assists.  Karsner knocked down all 10 of his free throws in the Berry game, many of which were converted in the crucial late stages of the action.

The likely scenario is Rhodes will host the SAA tournament next weekend if Rhodes closes out the regular season tomorrow at home by defeating Millsaps.  This will make Centre's challenge to move on to the D3 post-season difficult.  The Colonels have been the best SAA road squad this year so who knows.

One heck of a finish @ Oglethorpe today. Centre's Matt Gump hit a 3-point jumper @ the buzzer to pull out a 63-61 win for the Colonels' 20th victory.  Oglethorpe had gone ahead 61-60 with a 3-point play by Romero Bates with 3.6 seconds to play. Tough go for Petrels for the 2nd game in a row in losing on buzzer-beating 3-pointers.  Gump tallied 15 points &  was 3-3 from behind the arc; Josh Karsner led the Colonels with 17. Drew Patrick scored 16 and Bates chipped in 14 for the Stormy Petrels. Centre has pressured Rhodes to win @ home against Millsaps this afternoon to secure the 1st seed in the SAA tournament next week. Rhodes is leading by 8 @ the half.

Saw entertaining basketball @ Rhodes all weekend, and who would have projected 9-win Hendrix to go through seeds 3-2-1 in succession to capture the SAA tournament crown to earn the league's 1st automatic qualifier by defeating Rhodes 73-70 this afternoon.  Thad McCracken's band of Warriors showed grit in each game, most especially in the Centre and Rhodes games.  The defensive intensity Hendrix displayed was clearly unmatched.  Starters Hank Aldous and Vance Luke led today's offensive explosion as they combined for 55 of the team's 73 points.....Aldous was virtually unstoppable with 32, driving both baselines for good shots at will in the 2nd half. Rhodes was pretty close to as good defensively.  Hendrix rarely wavered in their performance in the final and that was the difference in a close back and forth game where neither team could build a lead of more than 6.  Today's final was probably one of the best basketball games I've had the pleasure of watching.  Hope maybe we'll hear from McCracken about his team's amazing run on Hoopsville tonight?

Am slowly getting back into the basketball mode and am way behind on the SAA!  Hoping to take in a few games at Rhodes over the Christmas holiday season.  Would love to hear from old and new posters on the SAA competition this season.  Catch me up!

Decent start for Sewanee during the non-conference part of the schedule.  Currently 5-2 with losses at Covenant and Huntingdon.   Won the return games on the Mountain against both teams.    Piedmont on the Mountain on Thursday and wrap-up the non-conference at W&L's holiday tournament.     Open conference play on 1/3 at Centre with last non-conference game the following day at Boyce.

Congrats to Rhodes on their huge 76-69 upset of #3 Amherst today.

Yep, big win for the Rhodes team.    How much weight do wins like that have on post-season scheduling at this level?   Is there a D-3 equivalent of RPI?

Yes. It helps the SOS.

It will likely be a win against a regionally ranked team.

There may even be a win against a common opponent in the consideration by the committee.

A big h/t to Brian Lester and the entire D3Hoops team for the Around the South column about Sewanee's Keyshonn Carter.    Was a good read!

PLAYING Amherst was going to help the SOS whether they won or loss. That's why it's key to PLAY better schedules. The second part is to then have a better WL percentage and hope the good teams on your schedule don't all of the sudden tank.

Rhodes may have fired on all cylinders against Amherst but that was not the case tonight @ Centre as the Colonels maintained a double digit lead most of the way in winning by 23.  Blake Scinta scored 17 & Tyler Wesley pulled down 16 rebounds in helping Centre to its 9th win & 1st conference victory.  Rhodes heads to Sewanee next; Colonels will host Hendrix Sunday.

Final score from the Mountain: Sewanee 69, Rhodes 64.

Let me ask that y'all indulge me for a moment:
Tigers, Tigers, leave 'em in the lurch!   YSR!

Now that I got that out of the way, here's results from the box score:
Jorden Williams with 20, Cody Jones with 18, and Seth Brown with 12 off the bench.  Rhodes was led by Daniel Galvin with 16 points.

Puts the Tigers at 10-4, 3-0 in the SAA sharing 1st place with B-SC at 7-6, 3-0 in the league.

Centre comes to the Mountain next Saturday.
