The Mole

Great summary Joe Rock, thanks for the update.

Mules head down to Salisbury in a matchup of teams that are a combined 24-0. They are the first team to pitch shutouts in the first two weeks of the playoffs. They surrendered just 26 points in November. The Seagulls option attack could be tough to simulate game speed at practice this week and may take them a half to adjust. Can the home team slow down the Allentown offense? Should be a great contest.

The Mules are firing on all cylinders so far in the playoffs.  This is the first time any team has thrown two shutouts in the first 2 rounds of the D3 playoffs.  This is probably the Mules best year since they won the mythical small college national championship in 1946 by defeating St. Bonaventure in the Tobacco Bowl.  https://www.mcall.com/news/mc-xpm-2006-12-14-3695186-story.html
Saturday's game against Salisbury should be a wang dang doodle!

Preview of tomorrow's quarterfinal game in Salisbury between the Mules and the Sea Gulls (you've got to love D3 mascots!)

QuoteFootball vs. Salisbury NCAA Playoff Preview

One week after handling one of the top defenses in Division III, the Muhlenberg football team will take on one of the top offenses.

The fourth-ranked Mules (12-0) travel to Maryland to face sixth-ranked Salisbury (11-0) in a NCAA quarterfinal game on Saturday at noon. The winner advances to face the winner of the Delaware Valley-North Central game in the semifinals.

Muhlenberg is the first team in the history of the Division III playoffs to win by shutout in each of the first two rounds. The Mules blanked MIT, 38-0, in the first round, before advancing to the quarterfinals for the second straight year with a 42-0 shutout of Brockport, which came in with the top rushing defense in the NCAA.

A shutout will be hard to come by against the Sea Gulls, who are third in Division III in scoring at 51.1 points per game. A high-powered triple-option attack that averages 343.0 rushing yards per game has led Salisbury to wins of 83-0 (against Maritime) and 62-41 (against previously undefeated Union) in the NCAA Tournament.

The Sea Gulls have been held under 40 points just once in their last eight games.

The Mules are third in Division III in scoring defense, allowing only 9.8 points per game, and have given up a total of 33 points in their last six games. Muhlenberg also is 10th in rushing defense and total defense and 14th in pass efficiency defense.

The Muhlenberg offense has also been on a roll, scoring at least 40 points in seven of its last nine games. Despite giving up 41 points to Union, Salisbury is ninth in Division III in rushing defense and 25th in total defense.

The teams have met twice previously, both in the postseason. In the 2007 NCAA Tournament, Muhlenberg scored 10 points in the final five minutes for a 31-21 win. In the 2013 ECAC South Atlantic Bowl, Salisbury stopped a two-point conversion with 24 seconds left to hang on for a 21-19 win.

Salisbury, the New Jersey Athletic Conference champion, and Muhlenberg, the Centennial Conference champion, have one common opponent in TCNJ. The Mules won 45-26 in their season opener in a game that was 42-7 late in the third quarter. The Sea Gulls won 62-20 last month in a game that was 48-14 at halftime.

Congrats to Muhlenberg on a great game,  your defense played very well. You dictated the game on all fronts from start to finish.  Good luck in the Semis.

Muhlenberg hosting North Central at noon on Saturday. Game to be televised on ESPN3 (and I think the other semifinal as well). Pretty cool experience for the players, coaches, fans, alums and institutions. Mules are the only remaining unbeaten squad left (kudos to Middlebury for finishing 9-0, still curious how NESCAC would fare with limited rosters, etc.) and have only surrendered 8 points in the bracket.

Appears to be a matchup of North Central and a gunslinger QB and a stingy Mules D, but these teams have not gotten here by accident and are not one dimensional in any facet of the game. Regardless of the outcome, an awesome season for both teams. As a PA resident who almost attended Muhlenberg and being located an hour away, I am pulling for them. Just want to see a great game that may help educate "those that are not aware" how good football is at this level.

Final comment, with two Pool C teams left, the committee got it right. Not to beat a dead horse, I wonder how Susquehanna may have done, as their only blemish was a 24-17 OT loss in Allentown. Further evidence how difficult it is to win your league and get the opportunity. Good luck to all the remaining semifinalists!

Should be a great game in Allentown. The best team the Mules have seen all season coming to town. I'm no prognosticator but I believe it will likely be a one score game either way. (35-31, 38-35, something like that) You'll get your $10 worth if you attend. Mules playing with house money (although I'm sure they don't see it that way) at this point. They're a sneaky good team that doesn't bludgeon you, they're just real sound in every aspect of the game. Although 17 points allowed over the last 5 games does tend to get your attention. Centennial teams in the semis two years in a row-great for the conference.

In some ways, Muhlenberg reminds me of service academy (Army Navy Air Force) teams.

Athletically capable, but very very smart and disciplined, executing to a high degree of perfection...

As an MIT alum (and fan), rooting for Muhlenberg to go all the way.  And I know that I'm not the only one with that view.  Good luck against North Central!

Muhlenberg is playing very well.  This next game looks to be a good match-up.  Can't wait to see it.

Question:  If the Mules were ranked higher than Salisbury how did the Sea Gulls get a top seed ahead of MC?

Pat Coleman

The NCAA uses the NCAA regional rankings to rank teams, not the D3football.com Top 25.
