Congratulations Hope. Calvin once again played like that deer in the headlights look throughout the game. Some of it is just impressive D by Hope, but Calvin also had no idea what they were doing on offense once again. Really ugly to watch. Hurts not having a true point guard. Hopefully they get that solved by next season.

Very similar game to one from 2013 at Van Noord
https://www.miaa.org/mbb/stats/1213/0116cahp.htm
43-19 at halftime, Calvin shot 62% to Hope 21% in the first half.
Hope set a new low bar last night.
I was thinking about that season last night, and am hoping, as a Calvin fan, that the second Calvin-Hope game doesn't turn out like it did that season. The 2012-2013 season Calvin had one of the most talented rosters in years (and ended up winning the league, league tourney, and going to the Sweet 16), and easily handled Hope the first game as mentioned. The second game Hope pulled off the upset and beat Calvin. The 2005 season you mentioned earlier it went similar as well with how the rivalry played out. Anyway, it'll be interesting how Calvin-Hope part 2 will go this time around come February. One bright spot for Hope last night is Gabe Quillan showed he has quite the talent.

I know some/all of these have been shared previously, just bringing all of the posted 22-23 schedules together:
Adrian: https://adrianbulldogs.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule
Albion: https://gobrits.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule
Alma:
Calvin: https://www.calvinknights.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/schedule
Hope:
Kalamazoo:
Olivet:
Traine: https://www.trinethunder.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/schedule
Out of curiosity, what's the main reason that Calvin/Hope don't have one of their match-ups on a Saturday for the second straight season like they always did in previous seasons for a long time?

Looks like Calvin vs Hope III tomorrow night for the championship. Nice game from Marcus Bult for the Knights tonight.
Calvin has still got to improve on taking care of the ball, but its offense looked less timid this 2nd half.

Calvin really struggled tonight when it came to driving to the basket and making any attempt at finding the possible open man on the outside. Nice win by Hope. Impressive defense.

Are the MIAA coaches pre-season predictions supposed to come out still?

While you have been lurking, have you been able to determine which MIAA school has better principles and biblical values?
My vote's with St. Mary's
To go a bit outside the MIAA, my vote is for Jerry Fallwell Jr University

Jake Zuiderveen 6-8 C Kalamazoo Christian will attend Calvin
I will be interested to see how many Freshmen will get significant playing time for Calvin next season.
One of the biggest differences for Calvin basketball this season in the transition from one coach to another has been in player usage. Gone apparently are the days of a strict rotation with guys playing in 4-6 minute stretches and now we see four players averaging 30+ minutes per game. For comparison, Jordan Brink had minute per game averages of 23.3, 26.4 and 29.9 for his sophomore through senior seasons.
I looked through Northern Michigan stats for the last few years and I think we can expect what we've seen this year as the new norm under Bill Sall. It happens to be that the five players being heavily used this season are upperclassmen but I don't think this rules out underclassmen, even freshman, from getting significant playing time. Naba Echols was a four-year starter for Sall at Northern and averaged over 34 minutes per game as a freshman.
Seems to me Sall's philosophy for doling out playing time is to identify his best players and to rely on them heavily.
For sure. I think this season that definitely is applicable because Calvin does not have the ideal roster depth that it'd like. There's quite the significant drop-off after the starting 5, IMO.

Maybe Coach Sall has something to do with Derrick's new found interest in defense!
Last year Calvin had a freshman named Carson Meulenberg on the roster that was a pretty good player. He is not on the roster this season. Does anyone know if he is hurt or what happened to him?
Carson left school to work for his dad.

Agree on your assessment, Sac, about Hope players seem too hesitant shooting the 3 point ball when having the opportunity and a somewhat open look. Especially in a game going against a Calvin team that proved to be overwhelming against them in terms of talent and experience during the last meeting , they would have had to try and get hot from downtown to have had any kind of shot today IMO

Calvin wins over Hope 75-62.
Thad Shymanski with 25 points, almost all of them coming in the 2nd half. One of the better 2nd-half shooting performance I've seen in this rivalry game in recent years, right up there next to Jordan Brink's final Calvin-Hope game.
Rough shooting night for Hope , especially as a lot of their misses came from inside or around the paint.
Hope 3-8 from the 3 point line. Calvin 12-29. Quite the difference in attempt numbers.
