Men's soccer / WC 2022
November 20, 2022, 11:31:59 AM
Posted in the Big Dance thread - keeping things clean opening a separate discussion for the WC here.

Qatar just too nervous right now making juvenile mistakes. Ecuador needs to continue the press and force more poor decisions. Qatar needs to get to half and regroup

Men's soccer / 2019 Pool C bid "stealers"
November 08, 2019, 10:53:20 AM
Thought it might be worthwhile to discuss Pool C candidates for the next 3-4 days, specifically those proceeding through the weekend that might take away a Pool C from a more deserving team.

As I mostly focus on the GL there are two potential bubble teams.  We have two AQ's that will be won by an unranked team - AMCC and PAC.  In the HCAC: Hanover is ranked and plays unranked RHIT, who has no chance of becoming ranked by Monday.  Should Hanover lose they put themselves on the wrong side of the bubble - 2-3 vs ranked and an SOS that will probably drop below the current .529.  I don't think Hanover can steal a bid with these credentials and a loss tomorrow.

NCAC final is the easy as both OWU and Kenyon will get bids regardless of outcome tomorrow.

OAC is a bit trickier with Otterbein at JCU tomorrow night.  JCU is in regardless of outcome; Otterbein will put themselves on the bubble with a loss.  After last night's OT win against MTU, Otterbein will be 3-5 against ranked and an SOS, currently at .565, mostly to rise after playing MTU and JCU.  A loss tomorrow puts Otterbein at 12-7, 3-6 vs ranked, and an SOS north of .570. Of their three ranked wins, only the OWU victory is impressive.

GL has placed between 6 and 8 teams in the NCAA's in recent years. This year it will be 6 for certain - maybe a 7th.

Men's soccer / 2019 Great Lakes Region
August 31, 2019, 08:46:54 AM
Listened to Nazareth last week - the song "Telegram":

"Here we are again playin' the same old scenes
Lookin'for someone who will share our dreams"

Games I saw for at least a little bit:

  • CMU - looked totally dominate to begin the game - got the two goal lead before 20 minutes. Not sure what happened second half but Salisbury missed a golden opportunity to tie it in the 84-85th minute - shot from inside the 6 the CMU defender somehow prevented from going in
  • Otterbein - all the scoring late in the first half - from what I saw a fairly even affair - very windy - made the game a bit choppy.  Otterbein needs to tighten things up in the back.  Last year's keeper decided to play baseball exclusively so we'll have to see how the new players do.
  • CWRU-Berg - a beautiful goal from Case - all they needed but Berg impressed me.  They were in this game throughout - their keeper made some nice saves.  But they have attacking talent, and - as usually - Case's defenders smothered their attempts. Very interested to see Berg again
  • Capital-Geneva - game played on grass - historically not Cap's favorite surface.  Very dominant first half for Cap - several near misses. Second half Geneva comes out strong = tips the field for 15 minutes.  Cap adjusts and balances out the game for the rest of the half and steals the game in the first OT.
Not Great Lakes but I tuned in to see the end of the Chicago- Macalester.  Boxscore shows the dominance of Chicago - the small amount of the game I saw was UC attacking a parked-bus . . .

Other thoughts:

  • OWU - boxscore indicates a dominant performance that is negated by a late 'Zoo goal.  Got Calvin today.
  • Headscratcher of the day goes to Denison. Juniata has won 9 games since 2016, Denison projected to be in the top 4 of the NCAC
  • ONU - first time under a new coach for many years - draws away from home.  Tough equalizer conceded late - stats lean towards a strong performance by ONU.

Men's soccer / 2017 Great Lakes Region

Schedules are slowly making their way to the World Wide Web.  Here are a few:

While not in the GL - I include Calvin's schedule as three of their 4 non conference games are against GL teams (OWU, Oberlin and CWRU) - another good job of setting up challenging games: http://www.calvinknights.com/sports/msoc/2017-18/schedule

Men's soccer / New rule changes for 2016 season
September 02, 2016, 09:17:47 AM
For those of you who referee or pay attention to FIFA rules changes:  the only changes adopted by NISOA for this season are the amendments made to OS.  I spoke to the officials at half of the Kenyon game after the red card foul against Otterbein.  They all agreed that if college had adopted the new FIFA interpretations on DOGSO the card would have been yellow, not red.

The new OS interpretation has us calling the player OS when they actually get involved in the play.  Each year this term: "getting involved in the play" seems to receive a new treatment - but the take-away from this revised interpretation - and all of them over the past 4 years quite frankly: hold your flag and wait for a player in an OSP to get involved.  "Getting involved" has moved more towards a player physically touching the ball.  An oddity we'll probably see and will cause a murmur to run through the crowd: a player coming back from an OSP and touching the ball in his defensive half - the restart is in his defensive half where he touched it.

Men's soccer / Periscope as a video alternative
September 02, 2016, 06:40:00 AM
If you follow the Twitter accounts of certain teams you may find live video feeds streamed via Periscope. You might also search Periscope - but I admit I haven't "mastered" the searching techniques of hashtags . . .
