Men's soccer / NACC 2022
October 27, 2022, 11:19:29 AM
Not sure if on anyone's radar but the NACC Regular Season race was as wild & chaotic as it gets.

https://naccsports.org/standings.aspx?path=msoc

13 team league with a full 12 game round-robin schedule. 6 schools qualify for conference tournament.

Top 8 separated by only 3 points.

3 way tie at the top between Concordia-Wisconsin, Aurora, & MSOE.

Concordia-Wisconsin awarded #1 seed after being granted a forfeit victory over Concordia-Chicago from 10/22 after a 1-1 draw where CUC played a player who received his 5th yellow card in the match prior.

3 way tie for 4th between Marian, Benedictine, & Dominican.

Wisconsin Lutheran finishes 7th despite only 2 losses in 12 matches and a 2-2 home draw with MSOE last evening where a win would see WLC jump from 7th & out of the NACC Tourney all the way up to the top & be named co-conference champions.

St. Norbert who won the NACC in 2021 in their first year in the conference, misses out on the conference tournament altogether in 2022.

Wild season and the NACC Tournament is entirely up for grabs with no team separating themselves from the pack. Probably the strongest year for the conference within the region as well with a number of good results.

Likely still not a league with a Pool C candidate but that is not too far away. Should be a fun conference tournament to follow.

Loras coach announced today. https://duhawks.com/news/2020/3/17/mccarthy-tabbed-to-lead-mens-soccer-program.aspx

Anybody know much about him? No offense to him, but figured there would be a hire with more experience/credentials.

Best of luck to him though!

Anyone have any insight on the Loras job? It's been 2 months since Rothert stepped down unexpectedly and no word. . .

Got it.

I'm surprised that a school had someone running both the men's and the women's programs well into this decade. And I especially wouldn't have expected it of a WIAC school, although I realize that the sport of soccer has been the red-headed stepchild of the WIAC.

Greg Henschel led both programs at UW-Whitewater until the 2012 season when he moved on to UW-Milwaukee women. The Warhawks split the positions that year hiring Tony Guinn for the men and Ryan Quamme for the women.

Suprisingly enough, Platteville and Whitewater are the only WIAC Men's Soccer teams competing. After UW-Oshkosh cut the program and UW-Superior left for the UMAC, only two remain. It would be quite interested to see what type of conference the WIAC would be on the men's side if Lacrosse, Stevens Point, Eau Claire, Stevens Point, River Falls, and Oshkosh all had programs.

In his seven years running the UWP program, Fuschino had a record of 84-51-17 (.595). He took the Pioneers to the D3 tourney three times in those seven seasons, reaching the Sweet Sixteen in 2012 and the second round in each of the past two seasons. In other words, he's a proven winner on this level who has recruited extensively in the Chicagoland suburbs for years.

Actually, he's been there since 2007 with an overall record of 116-75-19, 11-16-2 in the now defunct WIAC.

Wasn't he the UWP women's coach between 2007 and 2011?

I believe he was coach for both genders initially. But I know for certain that he'd been with the men since 2007.

Enzo is a great guy who I imagine will do well for NCC. He always coached high school boys teams for Madison 56ers which led to a handful of recruits year after year. I wonder which Naperville area club will pick him up.

Bloots, thanks for setting up the tournament challenge and tallying the scores. Well done to you for squeaking out the win over
Pelinho with the tie-breaker. Lastly, a shout out to casualfan for being the only one to pick Tufts over Calvin in the final. He overcame
a slow start in the first two rounds to almost win.

For being a casual fan, I guess I know more than I thought  ;)

Long-time coach, Dr. Steven Smith, retires as Hope College Men's Soccer Coach.

They've had some real success but have fallen off in recent years...

Does the long-time assistant get the job? It says national search underway but not sure of the likelihood that they go outside the program..

Back a numbers of a years ago, two of the UW schools used to commonly play D1 schools in spring season and preseason.

Oshkosh would play UW-Green Bay every spring for a number of years. Oshkosh won at least 2 of those matchups to my knowledge.

Whitewater played Marquette, UW-Milwaukee, and Northwestern. Beating UWM once and narrowly losing by 1-2 goals in all other matchups.

Like you've mentioned, I think the gap between the top D3 and some D1s is still evident but games can be closer than one would expect, especially in "non-competitive" times like spring season and preseason exhibitions.

One thing's for sure at the U of C -- you play sports there for your own satisfaction and for the sake of your teammates, not because there's any sort of campus glory in it. I've met several Maroons and ex-Maroons over the years, and there's a refreshing lack of ego about them with regard to their athletic accomplishments. I suspect that toiling in anonymity at sports on a campus where excellence is measured in brainpower rather than musclepower gives you that healthy perspective about yourself as a student-athlete.

RE:  U Chicago students not caring a lick about the soccer teams or sports in general (or even having much awareness that there are sports teams).  While Chicago may be at the extreme end in this regard, I think the lack of general campus interest applies at many of these schools and perhaps with D3 overall other than the oft-mentioned exceptions like Messiah, OWU, etc where relatively large attendance is the norm.  My daughter played soccer in high school but she never cared to observe a single men's soccer match at Rochester in her 4 years.  She stopped by a women's match once for 15 minutes because a high school teammate/friend was there playing for a visiting school.

Oh, I absolutely agree. It's just more noticeable at a place like the U of C that has 6,000 undergraduates and an overall community (undergrads, grad students, faculty, and staff) that is bigger than any three other Illinois-based D3 schools combined. While I've only been down to Hyde Park to see three sports played there (men's soccer, men's basketball, and women's basketball), the number of Chicago students who attend those contests is roughly the same as the typical number you'd find at a CCIW school in those sports -- and CCIW schools have one-third the number of undergraduates as does the U of C. That's a striking difference.

Quote from: PaulNewman on November 22, 2017, 10:28:04 AMBeyond those with an immediate connection to players on teams and former players and parents, the reach of interest is pretty narrow.  It's a big deal to me as a former parent (although I'm often wondering how long that will last as my narcissistic attachment and over-identification dissipate more and more over time), and the tournament especially as it is happening is huge (with some natural drop in interest once "my team" exits).  I don't sense that D1 soccer is that different, and I barely follow D1 soccer at all.

Soccer is a little different than other major sports in that it's still an acquired taste for Americans in terms of spectating and viewership. (Of course, it's far more popular as a participatory sport, especially among young people, which is why the future is bright as far as D3 men's soccer attendance numbers are concerned.) I can name plenty of D3 schools here in the midwest that have great attendance for football, men's basketball, and even baseball that can't draw squat in terms of men's soccer. It's generally only the schools that have long traditions of soccer excellence (NPU, Wheaton, and Loras, for example) that draw well, and even having a well-established program is no guarantee in that regard; UW-Whitewater, which has been really solid for ages under Tony Guinn's leadership (13 tourney appearances in the last 19 seasons), barely averages 100 fans per match. And that's a school of about 11,000 undergraduate students.

Regarding UW-Whitewater... UWW football tends to the lead the country in football attendance year after year (though that may not be the case as of late due to their recent decline).

One small note: Tony Guinn has only been leading the Warhawks since 2012. Guinn has 3 NCAA appearances in 6 seasons. Greg Henschel was the head man from 1999-2011 and he was in charge for 9 NCAA appearances in 13 seasons while also serving as Head Coach for the women from 2000-2011 and helping that program reach national prominence. He then accepted a Division I job with UW-Milwaukee Women but didn't last long there though and has not coached in college soccer since the 2014 season.

I wonder the reason for the Dominican-Lake Forest cancellation? Hurts DU for sure in their semifinal bid.

After seeing a few squads live and almost all via online streams, I'll go with this as my NACC Tourney quarter-final predictions.

#6 Marian @ #3 Benedictine - In a rematch of a recent, feisty 1-0 win for BenU, I see the Eagles coming out strong on their home turf looking to repeat as Conference Tournament champions. Marian hasn't made a NACC tourney appearance since 2010 so none of their players are experienced in postseason play while BenU made the run to the NCAA Sweet 16. BenU cruises to a 2-0 victory.

#5 MSOE @ #4 Aurora - Aurora takes this one 3-1 I think unless Braden Andryk can carry MSOE. The Raiders have been quite average this season in my opinion and Aurora is playing well at the moment.

CUW with a huge 6-1 victory over Marian. Missed on that one. WLC takes down Lakeland 5-2, about right.

Weekend Matchups 9/23

Aurora @ Edgewood - Prediction: Aurora 2-0

Dominican @ Marian - Prediction: Dominican 4-0

BenU @ CUW - Prediction: 1-1 draw

Rockford @ WLC - Prediction: WLC 3-1

CUC @ Lakeland - Prediction: CUC 2-0

Elsewhere...

MSOE @ Marantha - Prediction: MSOE 7-0

Tonight's Conference Opener Matchups

CUC @ BenU - Prediction: 4-0 BenU takes care of business at home.

Rockford @ Dominican - Prediction: 6-0 Dominican rolls.

Edgewood @ MSOE - Prediction: 3-0 MSOE as Braden Andryk goes off as usual.

WLC @ Lakeland - Prediction: 4-1 WLC as the Warriors take care of the lowly Muskies.

CUW @ Marian - Prediction: 1-1 as I think Marian always plays CUW tough and on grass, CUW struggles.

Elsewhere....

North Park @ Aurora - Prediction: 1-1 draw

Not far off with my predictions (aside from the non-conference drubbing that Aurora took at North Park)

BenU scores 10 seconds in, Kapetanos 3 goals & 1 assist, and the Eagles knock off CUC 4-0.

Dominican-Rockford was only 2-0 win 20 to go but finishes them off with a 6-1 result. I could see Rockford surprising someone in top 8 and jumping them... perhaps WLC on Saturday?

Edgewood scores 1st but MSOE responds 30 seconds later and then the Raiders pull away in 2nd half for a 3-1 win. No Andryk goals though which is surprising.

WLC-Lakeland and CUW-Marian both postponed. Looks like they could both be played tonight.
