Here's a story that cements my belief in D3 Football and why I'd rather attend games in Pella, Wavery, Storm Lake and Dubuque than Iowa City, Ames, Ann Arbor or Columbus.

If the all-powerful North Carolina FB program treats its athletes this way, whats going on in Tuscaloosa, Eugene and South Bend?

My brother-in-law played baseball at USC for 3 years before he was drafted. He then played in the major leagues for about 6-7 years. I can attest (have seen his transcripts) that many times they put their best athletes in classes that they are most likely to succeed and get whatever "degree" they can or is the easiest. Although he didn't take any "paper classes", I did find it funny that he got 1 credit and an A every semester for playing baseball  ??? And of course some other courses were the "basket weaving" types.

McAdoo is probably the minority of D1 athletes that actually cared about what he majored in. Most, at that level, are probably only thinking about the big payday of pro ball even though only a small fraction ever actually see the big money. Most are living pipe dreams and come back to reality later in life when they wished they had taken college seriously.

I'm not so sure alums at the big schools get treated any better.  My dad was an Iowa alum and my parents were season ticket holders for over 20 years, through losing seasons as well as winning ones.  Then, to keep their seats their yearly donations had to bump up to a higher level.  I realize big time DI athletics require large revenue and that is probably a necessary evil if we want our school to remain competitive.  I just felt bad that an alum that had played in the band back in the 50's and who's family had been going to games from way before that was now being told that being an alum and paying for 4 years of school, being a doner for close to 50 years and a season ticket holder for over 20 years meant nothing if he didn't up his yearly giving he wouldn't have his seats again the next year.

They did up their giving for another couple of years, but when hip replacement surgeries came up and the realization that spending a whole day in Iowa City was getting to be too much for them to handle physically, they gave up their tickets.  The realization they could pay to have their lawn mowed and drive and sidewalks cleared of snow for less money than their tickets cost, all while watching every game on TV from the comfort of their living room led them to not really miss the games too much.

It was after they gave up their Hawkeye tickets that I started taking my dad to some UD games.  D3 was a breath of fresh air for him.  Seeing some new venues...and most importantly, finding new food joints to hit up were a lot of fun for him.  For all the great memories I have of my dad and I going to Hawkeye games over the course of a few decades.  Some of my best memories are the thoughts that the last handful of games we went to together were D3 UD Iowa Conference games.  Sitting so close you could hear the coaches talking to the players...standing under a tree next to the bleachers so we wouldn't get rained on during a game...loading up on munchies at halftime for under 10 bucks...free parking...the list goes on and on.  For how deep Hawkeye football runs in my veins, I think I have a better time driving across Iowa on Saturday afternoons and talking IIAC football with other fans that are in-the-know about our brand of football.  I'm pretty sure it comes with a lot less bagage than the DI version of the game that now exists.

Central gets two recruits from Union of La Porte City.  An LB and a WR/K.  Both were 1st team all-district.  1 was 3rd team all-state.

Loras has a transfer from the Air Force Academy and we have a returning senior soccer player kicking field goals for us next year.

Now, they only have 21 other positions to fill  :o

On a more serious note, if anyone has not watched the Sol Butler story on the IIAC website, VERY worth watching. It is truley an honor that he is a UD alum but his acheivements are an even more important part of our countries history.

Went to the Cedar Rapids Titans preseason game last night.  They recruited in some stud QB that played on other teams for the past three seasons.  All I can say is I hope Colton Hansen is the starter as I believe he looked much better than the new guy.

Not much IIAC flavor on the Titans this year which is kind of disappointing but I can understand not punishing your body that way for a measley $225.00 per game.

But it was football and I had a great time!!!

Congratulations to coach Jim Miller and the Wartburg Wrestling team for their 21st consecutive conference title.  Most of these wrestlers weren't even born the last time some team other than the Knights won the conference title.

In doing some quick research I believe 21 straight titles is an IIAC record for any sport.  Both Luther and Central have had some long streaks in other sports, but I believe their streaks were snapped at 18 or 19 seasons.

21 straight titles is amazing, in any sport, but also in the toughest D3 wrestling conference its simply mind boggling.  Congrats to the Knights.  cough! cough! ('scuse me got something stuck in my throat there)

Lets face it Football talk is a big stretch right now, so how about a minor shift to politics for a moment.  In sight of  future tax reform our congress is diligently collaborating on  ;), how about a proposal to "narrow the base" of deductions AND support post-secondary education.  Chuck Grassley was spot on a few years ago when he criticized tax deductible contributions to big time athletic programs.  Who with a straight face can say these programs are non-profit?!?!

Lets make all donations to college sports departments be matched by an un-designated donation to the college's academic fund before any of it can be deductible.  Reduces the taxpayers indirect subsidy of the programs AND contributes to keeping tuition down for those hard working, studious college students like we all were back in the day.  whad'ya think?

Old Dutch, you sent us down this road so I have a question that I would like to ask the IIAC faithful.  The Governor of Florida has asked all state colleges to offer $10,000.00 BA Degrees.  Now obviously these degrees would be limited in what subject they are in but would this degrade what a "BA" is worth today to the employer?

I hope the link works!! :P

good lord, I come here to get some reprieve from political talk, and it can't be done. Good bye for another month.

notlongago, how about suggesting another topic to talk about?

Old Dutch, I like your suggestion, I just don't think it's practical.  Big time athletic departments are technically non-profit.  Plus, I don't think we need additional laws.  We have enough government regulation.  I'm not sure I need more.

As far as giving in the IIAC is concerned...
