Continuing the theme of CCIW teams of getting off to a slow start, Wheaton 79, Coe 77.

Francis with 26 points on 9 of 24 shooting and 4 of 13 on 3pt. His shot never really got going, and we saw more penetration from Francis. Wheaton had trouble finishing at the hoop. Luke Peters had a nice night, stepping up his inside game with 14 points on 7 of 12 shooting.

Wheaton's defense was suspect, with Coe getting too many good looks from outside. Kobe Eichelberger had 10 points, including 2 big free throws down the stretch.

A lot of work to be done by Wheaton, and tomorrow night is going to be a big early test for them. They still seem to lack any semblance of a second option when Francis struggles. They have a number of guys who have improved from last year and show potential, but they have yet to jell.

Besides Francis' struggling a bit, I thought the Thunder played a decent game but just couldn't sustain a run to put the game out of reach.  Missed foul shots in the last minute kept the came much too close.  However, they continue to get quality minutes from the likes of Gunter, Adom, Cruikshank, Alioth.

I think Luke Peters played an outstanding game – not just the already mentioned 14 pts and 6 boards.  But also the 8 assists and all the other terrific things he did that don't get on the stat sheet.  Really solid defense and being the key to running the offense.  He'll never be the scorer that Francis is or his brother was.  But when he's looking to drive or post up, he's also not someone that can be guarded one on one which opens up all sorts of dishes and kick out opportunities.

Perhaps Wheaton took the Cohawks less seriously seeing them go down at home to Millikin earlier this week.  And maybe guilty of anticipating this next game as they now they face #2 UW-Oshkosh tomorrow for the Lee Pfund Classic championship.  The Titans are big and athletic and will be a handful to defend.

I'm hoping for a good one and who knows - maybe even a Thunder victory?

As mentioned earlier by WUPHF, Carroll gave the defending national champions all that they could handle up in Van Male tonight before succumbing, 70-64. The Pios were actually down by only one with two minutes and change remaining. Nick Penny paced the hosts with 22, and Troy Howat added 19.

Carthage took on North Central tonight -- no, not that North Central, the UMAC outfit up in the Twin Cities -- and battered the Rams by a score of 78-51 in Kenosha. Kienen Baltimore and Jordan Kedrowski each had a 12 and 11 double-double, Sean Johnson also scored a dozen and contributed five blocks, and Preston Laketa and Jacob Polglase each scored in double figures as well, with 11 and 10, respectively.

Augie beats Alma 85-74. Ebel was top scorer with 21 points. Augie really had to work hard to win this one, as Alma looked much improved over last year and stayed in contention most of the game. We will know more about two of our conference favorites after Augie and IWU switch opponents tomorrow.

Angie not consistent last night. Big part of game was a 13 to 1 run at the end of first half. Wish they could play with the same consistency all game. They were tired at the end of the game. Took team to Grand Rapids last night.

Hope they get a good rest.  Too many fouls last night. Looking forward to the game today. Hope my seat today will be as good as last night. Alma does a nice job for disabled fans.

* Brady Rose: 34 points, 11-19 FG, 5-7 3-point, 7-8 FT
* Colin Bonnett: 10 pts, 2 reb, 2 assists
* Charlie Bair: 6 pts, 10 reb, 3 assists

* Thad Shymanski: 15 pts, 2 reb, 2 assists
* Jason Walter: 15 pts, 5 reb

I thought this was a very solid road win for the Titans.  They controlled the entire game up until the final 90 seconds when things got very tight.  Calvin was within 62-61 at 1:30.  On the next IWU possession, Alex O'Neill was fouled and made 2 big FTs.

Brady Rose was terrific last night.  He scored 20 points in the 2nd half, including 14 in the final 7:24. These baskets were all big...

7:24 - 3-pointer to put IWU up 8
5:15 - jumper to put IWU up 6
4:32 - jumper to put IWU up 6
3:28 - 3-pointer to put IWU up 5
0:42 - jumper to put IWU up 4

Rose's last basket was a really clutch shot that ultimately put the game away for the Titans.

Charlie Bair is a fun player to watch.  Some guys are pure shooters -- Bair is a pure rebounder.  He really knows how to go get the basketball.

IWU held Calvin to just 32% FG in the 2nd half and out-rebounded the Knights by 4 in the final 20 minutes.

Need to win another on the road today (Alma).

Take-away is that the Titans didn't play very good defense tonight, esp. in the second half.

IWU gave up just 62 points on the road, holding Calvin to 32% FG in the 2nd half.

Dear Q and Greg,

Maybe we were watching different games.  Titans had Calvin down by 15 and they came all the way back to almost win game, down one twice with less than a 1:30 to play.  Can't say the defense during that return, run back was very good.  Esp. guarding the pick and role on the perimeter.  If there was such a great defensive performance during all that time, IWU should have won by 30.  They didn't. Coach Rose called several time outs to talk it over and get them back to playing better defense.  This is not a very defensively minded team, compared to past editions.  Surely room for improvement.  I'm sure they will get/do better, but quickness on the perimeter is going to be a problem.  IMHO.  Thanks for the cat, Greg, very funny.  Did you watch the game?

Seems Alma gave Augie a pretty good game, so another good test for the TITANS the afternoon.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the chatsters.

Dunno if you've heard this, Mark, but I'm the broadcaster for NPU. ;)

North Park is hosting tournaments for both men's and women's basketball this weekend ... so what do you think I was watching yesterday?

Elmhurst finally opens their season later this afternoon vs Benedictine. Not sure how many players Benedictine is returning, but these two schools played a very competitive OT game last December, won by Elmhurst.  Elmhurst returning many players from an improved season last year. Interested to see if this year's rotation is any less dynamic that it was last season, when the starting 5 seemed to change every game.

And literally down the road from campus, Elmhurst's Immaculate Conception will play in the IHSA 3A football semifinals. Thus, it should be a very lucrative day for the Portillo's on Route 83.

* Brady Rose: 30 points (22 in the 2nd half), 4 assists
* Jason Gregoire: 18 points, 6 reb, 2 assists
* Charlie Bair: 14 points, 12 reb
* Alex O'Neill: 8 pts, 11 reb

Rebounds: IWU 42 Alma 36

The Titans seemed to have a little more intensity in the 2nd half.  And Brady Rose was sensational in the 2nd.  Jason Gregoire made a bunch of big hustle plays and big baskets.  And Charlie Bair keeps getting better and better -- he is just a monster on the glass.  IWU got 23 rebounds out of the starting post combo of 6-7 Bair (12) and 6-9 Alex O'Neill (11).

IWU certainly did not play great today...but they found a way to grind out a road game.

IWU is 3-0 and next has Wash U, in St. Louis, Tuesday at 7pm.

Charlie Bair will be a load to handle by the 2nd half of the CCIW season.  I think his upside falls into the "really special" category.

2nd half of the Alma game was the Brady Rose road show.  He just took over the game.  Titans came out in the second half more agressive at both ends of the court which was needed.

Two good road wins this weekend against pretty good teams.
