UWSP led the WIAC in attendance for the 15th straight year and averaged over 1000 fans per game for the 19th straight season.

The WIAC as a conference was 5th in the country, behind the CCIW, MIAC MIAA, IIAC, and OAC.

SP's average attendance of 1053 was good for 12th in the country... not bad for the team that had the lowest scoring average in the country!

Still has the WIAC listed as 9 schools.

Some weird stuff going on here.

In 2015: WIAC was 6th, with 9 schools, 113 home games, and an overall crowd total of 63,581. That averaged to: 563 per game (down 82 per game from 2014).

In 2016: WIAC was 6th, with 9 schools (WRONG), 100 home games (right?) and an overall crowd total of 59,249 (Uh....?). That averaged to: 592 per game (up 30 per game from 2015).

So, they've clearly got the wrong number of schools there... but they also have the wrong overall crowd total. From the WIAC stats page: 100 games and an overall  crowd of 57,525, for an average of 575 per game (still up 12 over 2015).

What's strange is that if you subtract Superior's attendance (2,779) from the NCAA attendance figures, you don't get the WIAC attendance figures.

But, if you take Superior's attendance from 2015 and subtract that from the NCAA attendance figures, you still don't get the WIAC attendance figures. But you get much closer. You get 57,443.

Which is 82 people fewer than the WIAC attendance figures.

And the exact number of people (on average) who didn't show up for each and every WIAC game in 2015.

Coincidence? Conspiracy?

You decide.

Clearly, the first time the numbers were calculated, it was a fellow Pointer who did the math???!  ;)
Although, to UWSP's credit, you figured out the discrepancies, so...  Ha.
Trying to figure out that accounting mess might kick in my OCD tendencies, thus driving me batty, so I'll leave it up to you to get to the bottom of this...
So, what about the whistleblowers? Anonymous students turned them in? Really? (Do we know if they were Pointers? Or what other D3 student-athletes may have passed through Quandt in September? Humm...)
Conspiracy, or not?  ;)

You decide.

How about:

c) Incompetence
d) Indifferent attitude among NCAA office personnel regarding proofing statistical data for The Division That Everybody Knows Nobody Really Cares Anything About
e) c and d

There's definitely some c but I also think there's a smattering of d as well.

Exhibit A: http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/m_basketball_RB/Reports/attend/2009.pdf

Pomona Pitzer, in 2009, 3rd in the country in attendance at 2,269 per game.

Their gym seats 2400.

Needless to say, they had a capacity crowd against the Moonee Pond Mavericks, when they jammed 47000 fans in the gym!

Or for the Willamette game (4700).
Or for the Biola game (4700).
Or for the CMS game (5500).
Or for the Redlands game (4700).

That doesn't match what they reported to the SCIAC (1,805). Team-specific stats

Someone appears to like the number 47.

Former Pointer head coach Jack Bennett offers his views on the rules infractions:

So apparently Jack thinks there should be no rules, at least at Point?  :o :o

I think the biggest point in Jack's article is when he talks about how many rules there are in the NCAA book and any coach can't memorize every little rule in it.  I think it's fair to say some minor rules were broken, but I think it's also fair to say nothing major was going on with the knowledge of Semling or anyone else.

I've heard straight from the team that there was no coaching going on at these open gyms in question.  This was a student that felt slighted because he wasn't allowed to join in on the games going on at Quandt and decided to throw a fit.  Now, I don't know the rulebook...some minor things could have happened...apparently taking notes at these open gyms is against the rules, that could have happened...also, maybe it's against the rules for the coaching staff to set up the gym time and organize it.  I don't know that either.  That's what went on though, so if the NCAA wants to hammer a team for organizing an open gym and possibly writing notes during the scrimmages...then they are spending their time on the wrong things.  Spending time on issues like this are the reason cases at North Carolina and Louisville take years and years to finish.

MJ Delmore, originally from Wisconsin Dells, is transferring to UWSP from D2 Southwest Minnesota St.  He was a solid contributor for SMSU the past 2 years, seems like a good shooter.  Was ranked 27th on the 2013 Wisconsin Top Senior Basketball player list.  He should have 2 years of eligibility for Point.

There's a gazillion rules and it's impossible for coaches to know all of them which is why our schools have compliance officers.  It's their job to know all gazillion though I doubt there's a human alive who actually does.

That being said it's absurd to think that a coach doesn't know that they can not be present, coach, take notes or whatever during out of season player organized practices.  That's akin to not knowing it's a violation to provide a sports related scholarship.  That rule is just too basic for coaches to be unaware of it.

I don't know what happened at Point but I trust their athletic department to sort it out and take whatever steps are necessary to prevent it in the future.  I just don't see this as that big of a deal.
