As a Neil Young fan going all the way back to the 60's, how do you confuse Neil with Rod Stewart???

Their voices and their music are totally different.

Well, made my first regular season WIAC BB game last night.  Closer for us to go to LaCrosse than it is to go to Menomonie - and I didn't have to run any training programs at the Tech College in Rochester last night!

Was really a pretty exciting game that went right down to the wire.  Both teams had some big lapses during the game - i.e. no one going after a rebound (either team).

With 2 seconds left, Stout had a 2 point deficit and they weren't able to block the inbound pass or cause UWL to get a 5 second violation.  In an attempt to steal the ball, Whitney Rawdon got called for a foul and 2 FT's made the final 65 - 61.

Not being able to stop Kassie Robinson underneath was the difference in the game.  Her 23 points led all scorers.

Neither team was hitting FT's very well.  In the second half, both teams were only in the mid 50% on FT's.  But the FT's made the difference as UWL had 25 FT attempts to Stout's 13.

It was worth the trip to see the Blue Devil women play.  Wish I could have caught one of their recent wins.  Had some good chats with some of the parents during and after the game.

Can't make it to the Stout Alumni game this Saturday due to other commitments.  The Alumni game is something we really enjoy attending as quite a few of the former players come in and it's fun to catch up with what they are doing in the real world.

I don't know if Champ is still reading this board, but if you don't hang out and comment when Stout is bad, it kind of lessens your credibility when Stout is good. You know what I mean?

That and you're fun to have around. C'mon back.

Bill

I haven't been able to get to a game since the home opener (non conference) back in early November.  Even though the results weren't good, I continued posting into December.  But then with the holiday break and things getting kind of crazy work and personally, I haven't been posting.

I have been reading though.

When I learned that Sami Schoeder went down during the holiday tournament out East, I thought about posting that.  I decided not to for fear that some would take that as an excuse for a continuing bad season.

It most assuredly has been a tough year to be a Stout fan, for sure.

Nice to know that I was missed... ;)

As Bill noted above, Stout falls to Superior last night 80 - 58 in Superior.

I wasn't at the game, but it's really tough to win when you only make 25% of your shots, which is what Stout did in the first half - including 0 - 9 from beyond the arc.

They did improve to 43% in the second half, but that's not good enough after you've put yourself in a deep hole.

Next up - Platteville at home.

UW-Whitewater opened with a 29-6 run over the first 10 minutes of the game and never looked back... :'(

Not an unexpected result, but you still need to play the game.  53 - 29 at half, final 95 - 65.

I think the next 2 games (Superior & Platteville) will tell us more about how Stout will fair in the WIAC this year.  Then UWRF before the holiday break...

The best thing I can say about last night's game between Stout and Winona was that the Lady Devils held Winona scoreless for the 3 minutes and 58 seconds of the game and held the lead for over 5 minutes.

Winona went on a 20 - 0 run after trailing 5 - 0 to open the game and never looked back.

Final score was 80 - 42.

Well, now that makes at least a little bit of sense to me...  I was looking for a technical on Mark N in the box score but only found the (incorrect) listing of a T on both teams.

2:25 is a little bit later than the "middle" of the first half so that was also a little confusing.

I've been around Mark N enough to know that it's normally not his style to get T'd up once, much less twice on one time out.

Champ not good bethany went down with knee may be out for season   And Noll was ejected in middle of first half  but was a good game from both teams

That's too bad for Bethany.  She really impressed me on Saturday.  Hopefully she can rebound from this.

Wasn't aware that Mark N. had been ejected.  Middle of the first half, Dubuque was still leading.  What triggered the ejection?

Full box score wasn't available last night when I posted.  Now I see that both teams were charged with a technical at 2:25 of the first period.  What was that all about?

First things first...

BW - Joe said hi to me for you... ;)  I still think you owe me a couple of trips up north, but hi right back at you... 8-)

Stout had a good weekend.

I got my first look at this very young team in actual competition.  I witnessed a number of miscues, but also saw plenty to get me excited about the future.

Saturday's game was against St. Scholastica - a team that actually led at halftime against UWEC in their season opener - before ultimately losing the game by about 10 points IIRC.

It was 14 minutes into the game before the Saints scored their first FG yesterday.  This despite the fact that Coach T was using his bench almost right from the start of the game.  Score at half was 39 - 16, with 8 of those points coming from FT's for the Saints.  Stout had 11 players contribute to their 39 points, with 16 points coming from the bench.  All but 2 players had minutes in the first half.

Final was 90 - 53, and the bench was even more in play in the second half.  The starters combined only had 21 minutes of playing time.  The bench scored 43 of the 51 second half points!

Top scorer for the Blue Devils was Sami Schoeder with 14 - hitting 4 of 7 from beyond the arc and 2 for 2 from the charity stripe.  Alexa Herasimchuk scored 10 off the bench - all in the second half.

Wasn't able to stay for today's afternoon game - but the Blue Devils pulled out the win over Mark Noll (former Stout Asst WBB coach) and his team from Dubuque.

Dubuque pulled out to an early 7 point lead at the start of the game, but Nikki Alexander (off the bench) tied the game up with the first of 2 FT's and then gave Stout the lead with the second.  Stout stretched the lead to as much as 12 points before the half ended with the score 37 - 28.

Stout maintained the lead for nearly 9 minutes of the second half, but then Aimee Reyser (sister of Stout Freshman Bethany Reyzer) hit a 3 pointer to give Dubuque a 2 point lead.  The lead would grow to 5 points before Stout tied it up with 5:51 to play on a FT by Whitney Rawdon.  Rachel Hanley's layup put Stout up by 2 with 5:01 left.  Dubuque tied it up at the 4:48 mark on a FT, but then Stout took over and did what they needed to do at the end of the game with Sami Schoeder hitting 4 of 4 FT's and Whitney Rawdon hitting 2 of 2 in the last 30 seconds.

Final score 74 - 68.  Rawdon and Schoeder led the Blue Devils in scoring with 22 and 16 respectively.  These 2 also led in rebounds with 11 and 9.

Aimee Reyser led Dubuque in scoring with 19 points.  Her sister Bethany scored 8 for Stout.  Hoping that Bethany can grow into her sister's shoes... ;D

Stout loses a nailbiter to Wartburg 59 - 54.  Sami Shoeder hit a 3 pointer with 7 seconds left to get within 1 point...  But it was nothing but FT's the rest of the game.

I'd have liked to see a win, but hopefully they can learn a lesson from a close loss.

Just to clarify things, I think it's pretty obvious where Crown stands. More importantly, why is Stout scheduling them? I guess everyone needs a tune up game.

Probably for the same reason Superior did last year and River Falls the year before that.  They were available.

Hey guys...  I was trying hard not to say anything bad about the opponent... ;)

As BW posted, Friday will tell me more about the team.  I like another 50+ point win, but I'll be happy with a win where we learn more about some of the new players.

Stout dominated last night, but it's just one game against a team of unknown strength.

19 players for Stout saw 5 minutes or more.  None of the starters had more than 15 minutes.  6 backups had double digit minutes.

Final score was 95 - 33.

The key to the game was turnovers - Stout forced Crown into 56 turnovers while only commiting 13 of their own.

Freshman Ronnie Moltzau from Eleva led the Devils with 13 points, on 5 for 7 shooting and connecting on all 3 shots from from beyond the arc.

Freshman Shelby Sterba started for the Devils and was 3 for 5 shooting with 3 boards in 10 minutes.  She did go 0 for 5 from the charity stripe - so she'll have to improve on that stat.

This is a very young team - it will be interesting to see which of the many freshman earn significant playing time.

Next game is Friday against Wartburg at Lakeland College's tourney.

I happened to look at the UW Stout page today because I wanted to check when the "Basketball Bash" kickoff was.

In reviewing the new Stout roster - I don't think there is any doubt which team will have the youngest team in the WIAC.

Kind of got me nervous when I looked at all those Freshman... :o

Like most years, you feel the loss of your Seniors.  Trish V was the only starter though, and will surely be missed!  The other 3 Sr's had their roles, and were great to have on the team.

I took the time to analyze what is returning though - and started to feel a little better.

Stout had 4 players with over 200 points last year, Schoeder, Rawdon and Windt return (#2, #3 and #4).

Stout returns all 4 of their top 3 point shooters from last year, Windt, Schoeder, Daleiden and Hanley.

3 of the top 4 rebounders return - Hanley, Schoeder, Daleiden.

And Stout returns their #1, 3 and 4 "ballhawks" (steals) with Windt, Rawdon and Schoeder.

What Stout doesn't return is any double digit shot blockers.  Either Rawdon will have to assume that role, or one of the new players - there are 3 recruits that are 6' or taller.

Will be looking forward to the "Bash" for a chance to meet the new members of the squad.  There are a lot of young women that have a real opportunity to earn a lot of playing time as a Freshman!
