Magic must be looking forward to the "dance" if Plattsburgh keeps rolling!

I'm hoping we keep rolling. Had a little blip over the weekend that could have cost us hosting rights but turned out it didn't matter, when Oswego beat Brockport, so we head down there. I don't want to be waiting on an NCAA at large bid, so winning the YAC tournament is the solution to that problem. Tough tournament this week, though, as all 6 teams are capable of winning the title.

Plus none of the six can count on an at-large bid so all are playing to make the NCAA tourney...

If Plattsburgh or Oswego win a game and lose a game in the conference tournament, they would end up with a 21-6 record. That should be good enough to get them an at large bid. That's what happened to Plattsburgh in the 2015-16 season and not only did they get an at large bid but they hosted a first round pod of 4 teams.

The other 4 teams in the YAC tournament will need to win it to go dancing.

It will help us if Rochester beats Emory this coming Saturday to clinch the automatic bid in the UAA conference. That should allow the SUNYAC team (either Plattsburgh or Oswego) to be the first East Region team at the table to get an at large bid. If Rochester does get an automatic bid and someone other than Oswego or Plattsburgh wins the YAC's automatic bid then we would be the first two East Region teams at the table. I think the East Region may get 2 at large bids from Rochester, Oswego and Plattsburgh but will be surprised if all three of those teams get in if they all need at large bids. The Lakers or Cardinals will be the odd man out. I think the YAC gets a total of 2 bids (1 automatic and 1 at large). If a large number of favorites get upset in their conference tournaments and need at large bids to get into the tournament, that will hurt the East Region's chances of getting multiple at large bids. If Rochester needs an at large bid, then the YAC may not get one.

The Liberty League, E8 and NEAC will only get the automatic bid that each conference gets. Hobart was 21-5 last year and lost out to a 19-7 Brockport for the last at large bid from the region. (and maybe the country)

Oswego State's senior center, Tyler Pierre, was selected as the SUNYAC Player of the Week after posting 3 double-doubles in the final regular season games of his career. This is the final POTW award for 2018-19. Tyler shot 69 % for the week and is #2 in the country in field goal percentage at 70.5 %.  Congratulations to Tyler on a great week, outstanding season and 4 solid years in a Laker uniform.

Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:

"CORTLAND, N.Y. - Averaging a double-double for the home stretch into playoffs, Oswego senior Tyler Pierre (Deer Park, N.Y.) receives the final State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week for the 2018-19 regular season.

In his final home game of the regular season against No. 5 Oneonta, the center had 14 points and 10 rebounds with a field goal percentage of 63.6. Pierre also had 2 blocks during their loss to Oneonta with the final score of 70-55. On the road, Pierre scored 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 1 block to help his team win over No. 3 Brockport. He went 7-10 from the field to gain a percentage of 70. The final score of the game was 85-69. For his last regular season game, Pierre walked away with 21 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal. He was 8-11 on shooting with a field goal percentage of 72.7 and 5-6 at the free throw line for a percentage of 83.3. Pierre's effort helped his team to get the win over Geneseo with the final score of 69-63.

Tyler Pierre's season's field goal percentage (70.5%), ranks first in the SUNYAC and second in Division III nationally. Pierre and the Oswego Lakers head into the SUNYAC playoffs as the No. 1 seed awaiting the first round victory of either No. 4 Cortland or No. 5 Oneonta.

The D3hoops Top 25 poll was released Monday night and Plattsburgh State is ranked #24. The Cardinals slipped several spots from their #21 ranking of last week as they went 1-1 over the weekend. Their point total dropped from 144 to 58.

Oswego State continues to hang around in the Others Receiving Votes category as they are #36 with 10 points. Last week they were #36 with 6 points.

Rochester is now ranked at #20 with 167 points. Last week the Yellowjackets were #22 with 89 points.

No other team from the East Region is mentioned.

So Magicman, is the lack of love for the East legitimate?  Or is there just some bias against East teams?

In terms of RPI, which is what the NCAA is using to select at large teams, Plattsburgh is 38th and Oswego is 40th. Next best East region team is Skidmore at 67. Rochester is in regardless, if they don't win the UAA they will be a pool C with their .605 RPI which is .010 higher than either Plattsburgh or Oswego.

There are 43 Pool A auto bids and 21 Pool C bids. Of the 43 Pool A bids, 20 are teams with RPI out of the top 64. Those conferences are win and you're in.

If any of the 23 current pool A teams in the top 43 are upset in their conference tournament, they will probably use a pool C slot.

If anyone other than Oswego or Plattsburgh [e.g. a suddenly hot Oneonta team] wins the SUNYAC, my guess is the finals loser, if Oswego or Plattsburgh is in, and the semi loser if Oswego or Plattsburgh is out.  Oswego's games are home games, in which a loss has a more profound impact on the RPI than a road or neutral game. If the SUNYAC final is two teams other than Oswego or Plattsburgh, they might both be on the close but no cigar list.

Just to be clear, RPI has no bearing whatsoever on the NCAA selection procedures.  It's a combination of SOS, winning percentage, and results vs regionally ranked opponents (along with head to head matchups and common d3 opponents).

Even in the secondary criteria, RPI is not used.

What Red Dragon teams will show up tonight in the Cortland vs Oneonta game.
Oneonta has been Hot lately and the Cortland has struggled a little bit.
Coach Conover seems to have Oneonta peaking at the right time again.
Should be a good 1

Will wait to hear what the Magicman has to say.

Can Magicman's Alma Mater go into Brockport and beat the Golden Eagles?

Let's GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Feb. 19

Potsdam State  @  Brockport State        7:00 PM

The Bears made the SUNYAC playoffs for the first time in 8 years, and this is the first time they have done so since the conference went to the current format of only the top six teams advancing to the YAC tournament. In 2010-11 Potsdam was the 8th and final seed and was promptly dispatched by top seed Oswego State in the first round. The Bears haven't won a playoff game in 14 years going all the way back to the 2004-05 season when they won the title and advanced to the Sweet 16.

Brockport is an annual guest in the tournament and won it all as recently as 2014 when they were the regular season and tournament champions. Injuries have hurt the Golden Eagles this season but they still managed to grab the 3rd seed and know they won't be dancing unless they win the automatic bid. Last year they got an at large bid over over Hobart (21-5) despite the fact that the Statesmen had a better overall record (Port's record was 19-6 at the time the bids were handed out). Brockport had beaten Hobart 89-83 earlier in the year, which was a big reason why the decision was made to give Port that bid.

The oddsmakers have made the Golden Eagles a 7 point home favorite in this game. The teams split the season series with each team winning at home. Port by 15 and the Bears by 7. Potsdam has made some major strides in the past 3 years as Coach Bechtel inherited a 1-24 team that 3 years later has a winning record for the first time in 13 years. I'd like to pick the Bears to win this game but making the playoffs is one thing... advancing is a Bear of a different color. Brockport wins at home by an 81-75 final score. But I sure hope I'm wrong and my Alma Mater pulls off the upset.

Oneonta State  @  Cortland State        7:30 PM

The battle of the Red Dragons chapter 3. The teams split the season series and last year they also met in the first round of the playoffs at Cortland. So I guess this is Deja Vu all over again. It's also a tale of two teams headed in different directions. Cortland has lost 3 games in a row, 4 of their last 5 and yet just prior to those 5 games they had a big win over the top seeded Lakers in Oswego. Hard to believe they lost two of those last 3 games to the 7th place and 9th place teams.

Oneonta is coming on like gangbusters once again. On the outside looking in as late as January 28th when they had a grand total of 3 YAC wins these Red Dragons went on a tear and won 7 of their final 8 conference games to end up with the 5th seed. Now they hope to make their 3rd straight championship game. They are 4-3 against Cortland since Coach Conover took over the program 3 years ago and over the weekend Oneonta got their first win over Plattsburgh since Coach Conover left Plattsburgh to take the Oneonta job. Oneonta has also beaten Oswego so they have that going for them as well. Confidence is at an all time high and even the oddsmakers think they are the hot team. Oneonta has been listed as a 2 point road favorite. After the way they handled my Cardinals last Friday I agree. They certainly seem to be peaking at the right time. Oneonta wins this one  76-73.

Semifinals are set....

Looks like it's a red team vs a green team in both games.

I would say it's legitimate this year. Rochester, Plattsburgh and Oswego are probably the only East Region teams that merit consideration.

Pool C bids have already taken a hit:

The top team in the WIAC conference UW-Oshkosh lost to the #4 seed. Oshkosh with a 23-3 record will get an at large bid. Would have been surprised to see another WIAC team get a bid if Oshkosh won the tournament.

In the NEWMAC conference top seeded MIT lost to 5th seeded WPI.  MIT with a 22-4 record will get an at large bid. This one also hurts because the NEWMAC was probably not going to get a 2nd team in, if MIT won the tournament.

In the Ohio Athletic Conference the #1 seed Capital (20-7) lost in the semifinals and the #3 seed Marietta (20-6) lost in the quarterfinals. They could get 3 teams in as #2 Mount Union (22-5) is playing #5 Baldwin Wallace (19-8) for the championship.

In the MIAC the top seed St. Thomas (22-4) lost in the semifinals. They will now get one of the at large bids.  #2 seed St John's (22-4) is playing #4 seed Augsburg (19-8) for the championship. If Augsburg wins that game the MIAC will probably get 3 teams in eating up 2 more Pool C bids. Augsburg has beaten the top seed St Thomas twice this year but has lost twice to St. John's. Need the Johnnies to come through again.

In the NESCSAC conference top seed Middlebury (18-7)  lost in the quarterfinals. They are on the bubble. The NESCAC has #2 seed Hamilton (22-3), #3 seed Amherst (21-4), and #4 seed Williams all still alive and at least 2 of those teams will get at large bids. They could get 3 at large bids but if Middlebury is up against Plattsburgh, I would think Plattsburgh wins out by virtue of a better record and a head to head win over Middlebury.

The NCAC has 3 teams still alive. The #1 seed Wooster (22-4), #2 seed Wittenberg (21-5) and the #3 seed Wabash (21-5) are all in the semifinals. This conference will probably get 3 teams into the NCAA tournament.

The Northwest Conference has #1 Whitman (25-1) playing #2 Whitworth (21-5) in the championship game. Both  teams will go to the dance.

The ODAC still has the top 2 seeds alive. Randolph-Macon (24-2) is in the semifinals as is Guilford (19-7). I think they will get a 2nd bid. Lynchburg (20-6) the #3 seed lost in the quarterfinals.

The SCIAC may get 2 bids as well. The top seed Pomona-Pitzer (23-2) will certainly get a bid if they get upset in the tournament. Clarmont-Mudd-Scripps (19-6) and Occidental (21-4) could also get a Pool C if they don't win the automatic entry.

The University Athletic Association will crown their winner on Saturday when Emory hosts Rochester in the regular season finale. The winner of that game will be the regular season champions and win the automatic bid. There is no post season tournament in this conference. The loser of that game, especially if it is Rochester will most likely get an at large bid. Rochester is currently the #1 team in the East Regional Rankings. If either Oswego or Plattsburgh overtakes them in the rankings it will only happen because that team won the SUNYAC tournament. So Rochester will still be the first East team at the table when the bids are being handed out.

The American Southwest Conference still has their top 2 seeds in the semifinals. Texas-Dallas (22-4) and Mary Hardin-Baylor (21-5) are #1 seeds from the East and West division. They could both go dancing.

The top 4 seeds are still alive in the CCIW and #1 Augustana (23-2), #2 North Central (20-5) and #3 Wheaton (19-7) all stand a good chance to get bids.

I think at least a dozen bids go to the teams I've mentioned and possibly as many as 17 of the 20 golden tickets are in this group of teams. If a few more favorites are upset then the bubble will burst for teams like Plattsburgh or Oswego.
