Messages - Raider 68

As many have read about JCU moving to the NCAC in 2025, I am wondering who could join the OAC going forward if any school. JCU is leaving for a chance to become a top dog in the NCAC vs. always going against the Raiders for post season opportunities. While there also the academic considerations, I do not see the conferences be equal in sport teams. JCU has always been a major player in all OAC sports, so I am missing their logic with this move.

Mount will have an opportunity to see a more competitive non-conference schedule if they can play teams with better programs than the last several years.

Maybe two open dates can bring about a more competitive schedule in 2025 and beyond.

The NCC kicking game has been really shaky all season, 15 missed XP for the season.  h....

After further review I think this is the reason NC went for two points after the last touchdown.  If you're NOT confident in your kicking game (a logical feeling based upon season results) and you're VERY confident in your offense (a logical feeling based upon season results) then Brad Spencer's decision is understandable even if you don't agree with it.

Agree.  If I'm in his shoes, I'd much rather put the game on my Gagliardi winning athletic QB instead of a kicker that I don't trust.   Now if you want to nit-pick the call of running a QB sweep into the boundary then I'm all in.  That play is a much better choice to the wide side where he has more room to maneuver.

HScoach,

A few posts from you lately, can we all count on your wisdom for 2024 and the compassion that the Raiders truly need going forward?

Watching the National Championship Game, I was thinking that Athletically Mount Union could play with those two teams.  I think what is missing is teamwork and passion.

In the past, the team was very Self-Confident and showed it in their play.  Now that Mount has come back to the field a bit, and others have improved, you can't just step on the field and hope the other teams piss down their legs.

Mount needs to get some swagger back, as well as the focus that LK/VK had instilled in the team.  Coaches can give all the speeches they want, but the best "Culture" teams I have been around (as a Coach's son, a player and a Coach) have been player led.

Key Upperclassmen on Offense and Defense need to take the lead in the offseason and bring back the mojo of Raiders past.

Well said!

In a year of D3 surprises, Cortland came through with a big win. A great offensive show came down to a key defensive
play. Don't quite agree that NCC was the most dominant team in the last 10 years, but they have been very good and
will be going forward. it will interesting to see if in 2024, the color purple shows up again. I would not bet against it.

Well after last night clearly not!

But going into this game they had the all time D3 Passer efficiency rating, were approaching the single season scoring record and had probably the hardest path to the playoffs of any team in the last decade (well at least on paper). They were a huge outlier on all the computer rankings too, in Logan Hansen's ratings they had the highest score of any team since the 90s.

Mount would not have beaten either team this year, but why did they collapse in the playoffs? That is the question.

Congrats to Cortland for a great game! You deserved the title!

I don't think Kevin Burke is leaving an FCS Assistant Coaching position to come back to Mt Union.

I also don't think Mt. Union fires Coach Dartt unless there is a major fall off.

I'm excited to see what changes occur next season both on the field and if they bring in an OC.

Agree, I would bet though the decision to hire an OC has been made, The question is who could take Mount's
spartan, predictable Offense back to where the Raiders were. 2024 will be a real challenge with so many
areas to fill. The good news at QB. Beadrie returning gives the offense a new dimension. The Raiders
have had a few very talented multi-dimensional QB's. Micheli, Burke, D-Angelo Fulford.

Hire Kevin Burke as HC and Dartt could be OC. That keeps it in the family in a way! :-X

IMO next season will be the true barometer on if Mount Union has lost the Kehres Luster.

They have to replace a lot of key players on both sides of the ball (offensively more than on defense) and really need to figure out what they are doing with OC and creative play calling.

It is about time the Mount's AD tell Dartt you need to hire a OC! Cannot understand why this was not done for the
2023 season. As a former player and long time season ticket holder, I am not sure I want to renew my seats for 2024.

I agree, 2024 will be a real barometer for the Raiders. W0nder how the recruiting will be after the playoff collapse?

They hired Junior Collins as OC but then he left for an NFL position IIRC. Probably didn't have time to find the right guy for the program at OC.

But did they even look for one? ::)

Getting ready to head to Mount for the pre-game brunch! Oh wait...I forgot that Coach Dartt cancelled my plans. Oh well I guess getting to the 2nd round is the new Standard we'll Champion. We can start hanging banners for "NCAA Football Round 2 Participant 2023". Thanks Coach. Let us know when you find the missing 85 pages from the playbook.

That sums it up! +

Wayne Ruby pens a thank you letter to his family, coaches, teammates and Mount Union.  Thanks four Mount Union coaches by name...but one name seems to be missing...hmmm

D3fanboy,

I truly hope Wayne gets a shot in the NFL and even drafted. An invite to the Combine in Indy will be a key sign.
Regarding naming the Coaches, this comes as no surprise to me. ::)

Thanks for posting his farewell message+

FYI...Beaudrie is coming back to Mount!

Is this serious? Don't mess with me...kid threw a beautiful ball, is athletic running the ball and has that "it" factor.

That would be great, but is it for only a year.? Is he is school elsewhere? He would add a key pass/run dimension and he is a tough player
Jackson Adkins will have 3 years left.

Some great posts on tradition, sportsmanship, as well as some criticism

Thoughts on the Raiders this post season;

- The Alfred State game showed some telltale signs for the Raiders this post season

- 1st round, the team was flat, no emotion, lacked execution. Only some life in the second half made the score
look better than it really was.

- Players, despite the records, QB Plunk's year was a drop off  from last year. Where was the defense last Saturday?
Alma's QB had all day the throw the ball, no blitzes or any creativity on defense. Stupid defensive schemes
at the end of the 4th Quarter. DeAndre Parker played a great game.

- Coaching. Mount's situation with the HC is similar to Ohio State. Ryan Day cannot beat Michigan with all the talent
in the world and is outcoached by a young coordinator. A change is needed at Ohio State. At Mount
Coach Dartt inherited a tradition rich program with the best of best players in D3, yet has not brought
his own mark to the program. Both he and Day would not use and or have an OC. The results are
showing big time. The players have to be motivated to play the game, the coaches have to motivate
themselves and the players. Although will not happen, changes need to be made at Mount. Running
the same play when you need to keep the ball late in the 4th Quarter shows no imagination,
whatsoever.  I wonder what Coach L. Kehres thinks after seeing that debacle on Saturday?

- Alma,  I give credit to Alma and their Coaches, saw some real creativity from them and the emotion that the
Raiders were lacking. Their fans really supported their team and hope they do well going forward. In
ineptness of the Raiders kept them in the game and they prevailed.

Future,  Mount will return some key players next year, but the many 5th year players came back for the extra year to get to Salem.
They did not have the passionate desire required to get there as in past years.
As a former player season ticker holder, I just did not see the fire either in the players and certainly not the Coaches this year

While I know there were bright spots this season, 2023 was not what many thought would be, a Championship year.
There must be some major adjustments for 2024, or the long tradition of excellence will start to slip in many areas.

I do look forward to K & J Dad's returning player summary at the end of each season that will maybe provide
some optimism for next year.
