I don't think Coach Hallet would care too much about moral victories.  The Berg just is not quite at the level that they need to be to compete with Mount, especially with a freshman QB. That being said the Berg is definitely trending in the right direction, I think an 8-2 season would be an obtainable goal for them.

ExTartanPlayer

Hard to say exactly what would constitute a moral victory by score.  I think it's more of a "feel" thing...(yes, I realize these questions are typed in the past tense)

Did they mount a legitimate scoring threat and/or score in the first half?
Was UMU legitimately "working" for their points, or running downfield at will?
Was the they still "in the game" at the half?

It's entirely possible for the a team to lose 35-7 against UMU/UWW, and it might feel like they played a "good" game if it was 14-7 at the half and they were driving to tie it before things got away.

Conversely, if you give up 35 points in the first half, then plays a scoreless scrum in the second half before a late TD, it wouldn't feel so much like a "moral victory."
I was small but made up for it by being slow...

Even though I am a relatively new Berg fan (son is a sophomore), I agree that the Student Princes have a steep hill to climb if they have any hope of beating UMU. I, too would love to see them give the Raiders a game. BTW what would you consider a "moral victory" for the Berg? Lose by less than 3 touchdowns?

BaseballMom22,

Welcome to the OAC board. +k to you. Regarding your question, holding the Raiders to under 35 pts and scoring 14+ would be a "huge" moral victory for Heidelberg. However, that is a tall order even for an improving 'Berg!

I just received an e-mail with a link to this article from a dear friend who played for the Warhawks back in the 60's.  I had never heard of the Crystal Ball Run, but it is, apparently, a college football fan web site.  The author, Matthew Elder writes a once weekly feature on small school college football.  Very awesome!

413,

Nice article, thanks! :) They wrote that Mount has 8 National titles in 22 years, but it is 10.

Regular season maybe?  All I know is you better lose soon during the regular season so Emma is happy, and all is right in Wiscy land.   ::)  I mean come on!  Mount lost a regular season game in 2005.  Wait...is that RIGHT?  Since 1994 they have ONE loss in the regular season?  Seriously....they need to move up to DII at LEAST!   ;)

I also think that 8-2 is possible, and would be considered a successful season. Since the rest of the OAC seems to be playing for second place anyway, who are the top contenders for #2? At one time I thought ONU was a lock, but I'm not so sure anymore. With the Berg already losing to B-W, does that mean they could finish #3?

Clearly I think that Mike Hallet is one of the up and coming coaches in DIII. He has gotta make his young men feel they have a shot. I totally expect him to exploit some chinks in the Raiders armor as he and Dean Paul have in the past. Close game, probably not. Blowout, no way

Seventies,

What colors are you wearing for the game? 'Berg in the first half and Mount for the second half or alternate by quarter? ;D ;D ;D

I am thinking about going to the game tomorrow. Is there a signature place to eat in town or nearby? Last time I was in town was when I rode the team bus and we did not stop to eat then. ::)
