Men's soccer / National POTY

Matt McDonald named D3 Men's Player of the year by United Soccer Coaches.
https://gomessiah.com/news/2022/12/13/mens-soccer-matt-mcdonald-named-the-national-player-of-the-year.aspx

An btw, "McDonald is expected to use his fifth year of eligibility in the fall of 2023 after the COVID pandemic wiped away his sophomore season in 2020."

Messiah players have won 11 of the last 20 POTY awards.  Crazy!

Men's soccer / School Closing
December 13, 2022, 08:05:47 AM
Cazenovia College, in upstate NY, will be shutting their doors after the spring 2023. I feel for the players on that roster as well as Coach Murphy who was in his first year with the program. Cazenovia was a member of the North Atlantic Conference since 2020 and the North Eastern Atlantic Conference (now United East Conference) prior to that.

Since its peak with nearly 1,000 full-time students on campus for the 2014-2015 academic year, the college's enrollment has dropped by over 40 percent.

Cazenovia has entered into teach-out transfer agreements with the following higher education institutions that will provide pathways for students to continue their studies beginning with the fall 2023 semester and will assist students with their transitions: Daemen University, Elmira College, Excelsior University, Hilbert College, Keuka College, LeMoyne College, Mercy College, State University of New York College at Oneonta, Utica University, and Wells College.

Men's soccer / Weekly Soccer Pool?
September 30, 2022, 06:45:20 PM
Would anyone be interested in participating in a weekly 10 game pool? Each Thursday I'll post 10 weekend matchups.  All you need to do is pick the winner and scores.  5 points for the correct winner, 10 additional points for correct score. We'll run it weekly beginning next Thursday and finish after R1 of the tournament (next year we can start earlier in the season).  Scoring will be cumulative and we'll crown a season winner at the end. Who knows, maybe we'll book some time on Simple Coaches Youtube channel to announce the winner who would also win their choice of a hat from whatever school they want :-)

Saint of Old and I were just discussing Union in the Liberty League thread.  My feeling is they are a school that should be much more competitive on a consistent basis.  The school has so much going for it that you would think it would attract better players (or coaches). It got me thinking about other schools that are surprisingly poor, or at the very least inconsistent in their year-to-year performance.

The poster child for me is TCNJ. Why they aren't a top 4 NJAC team every year is puzzling. And regardless of how tough that conference may be, they should absolutely put a significantly better product on the field than Kean. And I don't see why this team should ever be under .500 on the season.

Trinity (CT) is another one that I feel has loads of potential to be much better on a regular basis. I'm not saying they should go on a Tufts-like run, but Trinity is a school that should have a soccer program that can at least go .500 every year.

Dickinson is another one that's underperforming in my opinion.  A good year should be 14-4, but a bad year should be 8-8, not 2-11-2 like the season they just had.  Granted, this past year was a bit of an outlier, but that's just embarrassing. If a bad year is 8-8, you would hope that a terrible, no good, very bad year would at least have 5-6 wins.

Am I too harsh? Any thoughts on these schools or others?

The Senior College All-region and All-America selection process begins with coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches College Services program being eligible to nominate up to four of their field players and a goalkeeper for postseason recognition. Coaches rank their players in order. After the nomination period closes, coaches begin an all-opponent voting period where they see only those players nominated from teams they played during the regular season and select up to 22 players (1st and 2nd team). An All-America formula is then applied to the voting which includes factors such as the player ranking, success of the team and total votes received from eligible voters. This system is used for NCAA Division I, II and III programs.

Men's soccer / The Recruiting Process
August 30, 2018, 02:04:28 PM
Messiah has a great page on their website that outlines their recruiting process.  Is this unique to Messiah, or do other schools implement a similar process? No open tryouts, position specific-recruiting, finalization of recruits sometimes as early as September. This sounds more like a D1 basketball process than D3 soccer.

POSITIONAL NEEDS
We have completed our 2019 recruiting and have filled all of our spots for the fall.
We are looking to bring in 6 field players and a goalkeeper in our 2020 recruiting class.  Although this is subject to change we are looking for the following positions:  -Target    -Winger  -Center Midfielder   -Center Back

THE RECRUITING PROCESS
The team is chosen through the recruiting process as opposed to open tryouts when school starts. Therefore, it is important for interested high school student-athletes to understand both the process and the timing.  The following are some steps you can take to help in the recruiting process:

1. Contact Us:  Fill out our online recruiting form so we will have your information. Then follow up with a personal e-mail to our Recruiting Coordinator/Assistant Coach Aaron Faro at afaro@messiah.edu and copy Head Coach Brad McCarty to the e-mail at bmccarty@messiah.edu.

2. Come to our ID Camp:  Our Christian College ID Camp in June is a great way for you to learn more about us and allow us to see you compete in our system and style of play.  There are also a number of other Christian colleges that attend the camp that provides you exposure to a variety of schools.  Over 90% of the players on our roster attended our ID Camp and were offered a spot based on their play at camp.  More information and online registration can be found on the camp website: www.messiahboyssoccercamp.com

3. Send us Tournament Schedules:  If you will be attending one of the tournaments in the right hand box, then send us your game times, field locations, opponent, and jersey number.

4. Visit Campus:  You can get a campus tour, meet with Admissions, and spend time with the coaching staff.  Contact our Admissions Office at 717-691-6000 to set up the visit, and be sure to let them know you wish to meet with the coaching staff.

5. Send us Highlights:  Although we don't typically offer spots based on video alone, it can sometimes be a good starting place for the recruiting process.

6. Come to a Game:  It is of great benefit for you to see us play and get a first hand look at the level of play, the team's style, and the atmosphere surrounding a game.
TIMING

We spend the fall, spring, and summer of a player's junior year to identify and evaluate players who we think would be an excellent fit for Messiah--spiritually, academically, and athletically. By August the identification phase of our recruiting process is complete and we begin to offer spots.  We have finished our recruiting for the following year as early as September and as late as January, but for the most part it finishes up in the fall.

Men's soccer / CAC 2019
July 19, 2018, 04:46:49 PM
http://www.d3sports.com/notables/2018/07/cac-loses-another

Brutal.  Penn State-Harrisburg became the second program in as many weeks to announce plans to leave the Capital Athletic Conference, as the school announced it was returning to the North Eastern Athletic Conference starting with the 2019-20 season. The moves leave just six full member schools in the CAC for the fall of 2019: Christopher Newport, Mary Washington, St. Mary's (Md.), Salisbury, Southern Virginia and York (Pa.). Barring the addition of new members, the CAC would lose automatic bids in all NCAA Division III sports for the 2021-22 season.

Men's soccer / Good Soccer Books
March 25, 2018, 02:58:59 PM
Thought I'd start a new thread to mention a few good soccer books in case anyone was interested....

1. The Man Watching: Anson Dorrance and the University of North Carolina Women's Soccer Dynasty.  Bought this on a whim and I couldn't put it down.  Great "history" of UNC women's soccer, but more importantly some very interesting nuggets on what made Dorrance successful.  One of the things I took away from this book was his habit of writing personal letters to each of his graduating players.  I did this with my U14's before they went to HS.  I'm not sure they appreciated it at the time, but maybe they'll look back on it later in life.

2. The Numbers Game: Why Everything You Know About Soccer Is Wrong.  Really makes you evaluate styles of play and whether what you think is true is actually true.

3. Soccer iQ Vol. 1: Things That Smart Players Do and Soccer iQ - Vol. 2: More of What Smart Players Do. Great books for coaches, but non-coaches will also find themselves nodding in agreement.

4. The Miracle of Castel di Sangro: A Tale of Passion and Folly in the Heart of Italy. A behind the scenes look at what it's like for a small club fighting for promotion.

Washington and Lee Favored Atop ODAC Men's Soccer Poll

2017 ODAC MEN'S SOCCER PRESEASON POLL
(#) Denotes First Place Votes
1. Washington and Lee University (8)    115 pts.
2. Lynchburg College (3)    111 pts.
3. Roanoke College (1)    103 pts.
4. Virginia Wesleyan University    87 pts.
5. Randolph-Macon College    80 pts.
6. Randolph College    66 pts.
7. Bridgewater College    55 pts.
8. Eastern Mennonite University    51 pts.
9. Guilford College    38 pts.
10. Hampden-Sydney College    35 pts.
11. Emory & Henry College    30 pts.
12. Shenandoah University    21 pts.

FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee University finds itself in a familiar position entering the 2017 season as the Generals stand atop the ODAC Men's Soccer Preseason Poll for the second straight year. W&L picked up 10 first place votes on the way to a table-topping 115 points. Defending ODAC champion Lynchburg College collected three top nods as part of a 111-tally showing. Roanoke College secured the remaining first place vote and also eclipsed the 100-point plateau with 103 markers in the annual coaches' survey.

The 2016 regular season proved a success in the first year of unbalanced play in men's soccer. Lynchburg and Washington and Lee each won seven conference games, with the former posting a pair of ties to trump W&L's one stalemate and lone conference loss for the first seed in the ODAC Tournament. The two foes squared off in the conference championship game in early November, with LC reversing a 2-1 regular season defeat to W&L with a 2-1 triumph for the title. Two second-half goals proved enough to wrap up the Hornets' ODAC-record 15th league crown and the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

For the first time since 2009, the league saw two squads carry an ODAC banner into the national field with Washington and Lee joining Lynchburg as an at-large selection. Both programs made their way thru first round action. Lynchburg scored a 4-2 triumph over John Carroll University (Ohio), while W&L cashed in all five of its penalty kicks to advance past St. Lawrence University after a 1-1 scoreline persisted following 110 minutes of regulation and overtime play. The 2016 campaign came to a close for both ODAC competitors in the second round. Washington and Lee dropped a 2-0 decision to early round host Franklin & Marshall College, while Lynchburg forced overtime before falling to Kenyon College, 2-1, on the turf at Shellenberger Field.

Entering the 2017 campaign, both Lynchburg and Washington and Lee have earned national attention. Formerly known as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), United Soccer Coaches (USC) show LC as the 19th ranked squad and W&L slotted 24th in the organization's annual Division III preseason top-25 coaches poll.

There won't be a shortage of familiar faces for ODAC fans to follow in 2017 with 25 of the 37 All-ODAC honorees from a season ago set to lace 'em up one more time. Roanoke and Washington and Lee feature a league-best five returners each and account for four of the eight All-ODAC First Team selections back on conference rosters. However, when it comes to first team talent, Lynchburg benefits from a trio of returning standouts. Forward Fredy Flores is back to lead reigning ODAC Coach of the Year Chris Yeager's attack, while midfielder Nate Berning will do his best to help link up the two halves of the pitch. Goalkeeper Dylan McLaurin returns between the sticks.

Roanoke's first team honorees include holding midfielder Fortune Sibanda and centerback Sam Rauf, giving RC a potent duo down the Maroons' spine. Washington and Lee features forward Dylan Ritch, who secured ODAC Player of the Year laurels last season. He's joined by back Oliver Dolberg. The remaining first team standout dons an Eastern Mennonite University kit as Emmanuel Boamah returns to bolster the Royals' defensive unit.

The 2017 season begins with non-conference play on Friday, September 1.  The first set of ODAC contests is slated for Saturday, September 23. The ODAC Tournament will feature a slightly altered format with eight teams opening quarterfinal play on Saturday, October 28. The highest remaining seed will host the semifinals and finals on Saturday-Sunday, November 4-5. If you can't make it to the games, be sure to check the schedules online for live video, audio and statistics links.

Listed below is the 2017 ODAC Men's Soccer Preseason Poll as well as preview capsules for each of the ODAC men's soccer programs.  For more information on ODAC men's soccer, visit the websites of any of the participating schools, or go to the ODAC's home on the Internet at www.odaconline.com.  Don't forget to become a fan of the ODAC on Facebook and follow @odacathletics on Twitter and Instagram.
