Westminster got a nice non-conference win last night over Coe, whose only previous losses were to Illinois Wesleyan and Wash U. Joe James had 32 points and 10 rebounds. The Blue Jays were able to mount a 13-0 run over the final 3 minutes to come back and take the lead for good. They hung on for an 82-80 win.

I don't think a coach can consider whether a kid's parents are in attendance or not as a factor for playing time. That would not be fair to other players on the team.

Big congrats to the Westminster men's soccer team for advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament!!!

Nice write-up, Hope. I agree, much like Webster, Westmin for the past 5-6 years has found ways to reload, and get to the conference tourney every year. I'd expect next year to be the same, but certainly some guys will need to step up.

Unless they pick up a big, tall true low post that can play right away (those are hard to find in D3), look for a fast-paced, guard-heavy attack next year. Coach Mitchell has shown he can have success with that type of team the past few years. Lee and James will likely lead the way in scoring. I'd imagine Jordan Jones will have the opportunity to step into the point guard spot. Allen will need to stay true to his role as an active rebounder and defender.

There are definitely some question marks with this team at this moment, but plenty of time remains for those to be answered.

Westminster loses some key pieces.. Do they bring back enough to keep the conference tourney appearance streak alive? Let's hear it Hopefan

Yes, definitely agree the chances of a tie for first are very slim. I'm still rooting for it though.

I wish I had more to offer, but I haven't been able to make it to as many games this year as last. I enjoy reading and following the boards, though.

Has Spalding locked up home court for the Conf Tourney? Who would the tiebreaker for hosting go to in the case Spalding loses 2 this week and Westmin wins 2?

Congrats to Skylar Tolson on scoring is 1,000th career point today in Westminster's win over Prin!

Westminster finds itself on the wrong side of a buzzer beater tonight, as Missouri S&T hits a three at the horn to win 77-74. WC still has to feel pretty good about the strong showing against a D2 team. The Blue Jays get MacMurray on Saturday at home.

...Or his alter ego?

With the experience coming back, it may be hard for Freshmen to find minutes. We'll see what type of talent they have...

WC is small... No one over 6-4 except the Freshmen, Brondel.. 6-6... Not a huge difference from recent years. They have tended to be pretty guard heavy.

How does a team win a game by 21 if they had 28 turnovers??? I guess St. Clair having  27 of them helped the cause. Also, it looks like St. Clair was jacking the 3-ball and missing... 4-25.   Sounds like a pretty sloppy, early season game.

I don't have too much news to report from Westminster. Sorry Hope. Joe Prophet is back from his knee injury and practicing with the team. With Prophet and the returning core of players, I expect good things from the Blue Jays this year.

I noticed three players missing from the roster posted on the Westminster webpage... Chris Jacobs and Jurmain McDonald I believe have left the team. Not sure why... AC Slater, any info??? Tony Woods has knee injury, and will redshirt.

I noticed Westminster's schedule is now up on their website. Included is an exhbition against the provisional D2 Lindenwood. I look forward to seeing how the Jays stack up against a team that has experienced a lot of success at the NAIA level in recent years.  I noticed Greenville is also playing Lindenwood.

Just like Hopefan, I am a big fan of WC's nonconference schedule. There is not an easy game on there. Cornell was 3-22 last year and may seem to be the weak point, but guess who one of those 3 wins was against... (WC)... The IIAC has some strong teams... I expect WC to be competitive in just about every one of these games. They have an opportunity along with the other SLIAC schools to make a statement during the non-conference games about the level of play in the conference. With a lot of talent coming back throughout the league, one shouldn't be surprised if the SLIAC has more success in the non-conference season than in other years. At least I hope that's the case. The beginning of the year can be a very unpredictable time.

Hope- Did the folks at Hope have anything to say about the NCAA tourney game against Westmin?

Have any SLIAC teams released their schedules yet?

What's your wing sauce of choice at BWW? I've made the mistake of trying the blazin'   :-[

AC- Be sure to update us on this D1 talent. A pick-up like that could fill the void created by the loss of Kovach, a low-mid D1 caliber player IMO.  It will be interesting to see how the Blue Jays perform in what seems to be another year with similarly matched teams the top of the league

Hope, not sure what you're referring to with all that. I'm just passing along information I received. I do not follow Westminster soccer closely so I can't say I knew there was a Brian Schlemmer that played in 07-08, 08-09.

On another note, I encourage you all to vote for Joe James' shot for buzzer beater of the year on d3hoops.com. I believe he is currently in second place in the voting.

Heard from a source close to the Westmin bball team that the Blue Jays are bringing in 6'7'' transfer Brian Schlemmer.  Not sure what school he was at before, but heard he was impressive at a recent open gym. AC Slater, do you have any more info on Schlemmer? Any info on recruiting classes throughout the conference? I realize it is still kind of early for that, but curious to hear about new faces for next season.

I think it's hard to determine a true #1 team during the regular season since the top D3 schools from different regions play each other relatively fewer times than in say, D1. I'd agree with Hopefan that D3 isn't as top heavy as many would believe. As AC Slater was saying, the Westminster-Hope, WC-Wash U of 2 years ago, and many other games provide examples that the SLIAC can hang with the big boys. We just need to get over that hump as a conference, start winning some games, and not have to play the top seeds anymore in the first round.

newcardfan, they're brutal! They are on another level of D3 fandom than I will ever be. Hopefan, thanks for picking me up. I'd give you some karma love if I could.
