Congrats to Cortland! They played a great game and did what they had to do. Disappointed in the outcome but proud as hell of the NCC Football program and Coach Spencer.

Look, in almost every case I would defer if i won the toss. The opportunity to manage your end of half possession to possibly go 2 for one is a huge advantage. But If there is an argument to take the ball vs defer I am not sure there could be a more clear case than UWL. Start the game vs the top rated offense in D3 history against a very average defense or your own highly rated offense, that needs to score to keep the game close? Psycological impact? Speed of the game? How about just spotting NCC  7 pts and starting the game from there? I might rather put 7 on the board and make them chase every possession in this case.

I any case, I was thinking about that decision most of the game and wondered why the UWL coach made the decision. Given his pregame comments about the need for his offense to score and keep up and for his defense to get 4-5 stops, I was interested in his thinking on this.

This weekend, if I'm Wartburg, I probably revert to defer because of the strength of your defense. Wartburg has to feel like their defense can compete against NCC's offense better than anyone has all season. And that's probably accurate.  Not sure it's enough, but this is definitely the biggest challenge the NCC offense will face all season (and visa versa). Strength on strength.

And everything here is what prompted my initial question. USee is spot on with the logic! Mostly because he agrees with me!  ;D

Looking forward to a great semifinal next week! Where's the best place to get lunch and a beer before the game in Waverly next Saturday?

Pat,

Did anyone ask the UWL coach about his decision to defer the opening kickoff after winning the toss?

Interesting post-season comments from NCC Coach Spencer on the D3 Podcast about the best 32 teams in the playoffs.

Linfield not making the playoffs
The bracketing process
The D-3 philosophy of the playoffs
The Geographic Proximity problem

Like he said, he is saying what not many want to say. That the system is flawed and needs fixing!

Another QB quietly having an outstanding season is Ben Thorson. 70% completions, 30 passing TDs, 0 INTs.

I used to know a Mugsy... ;)

Happy the conference gets two teams in! Wheaton got a nice draw in the first round. Gotta beat them at some point if you want to win it all. Mount Union will breeze to the finals.

Is there some consternation over Lehnen's availability for tomorrow? Just read the Quick Hits and Pat made a comment about watching to make sure he was out there for the opening drive.

I'm not particularly consterned, but he did essentially get knocked out of last week's game, so a small confirmation would be welcome for me.

Confirmed!  ;D

Average victory margin in the CCIW's first weekend of league play: 46.6 points.
Average victory margin in the CCIW's first weekend of league play, excepting CU @ NPU: 54.25 points.

This is pretty ridiculous. Last year the same five matchups occurred during the first Saturday of CCIW play, and the average margin was 38.8 points. That's bad enough, but it was more than a touchdown worse yesterday.

Last year the second week's average margin was 29 points, and since it'll again be the same five matchups this year, it'll be interesting to see how this coming Saturday's average margin compares to 2022's second week. Heck, Elmhurst vs. North Central and Wash U vs. Carthage may bump it up above 29 points all by themselves, no matter how close the other three games are.

The average margin of victory over the course of the entire 45-game CCIW football schedule last season was 33.3 points. But it's not simply a case of perennial national powers NCC and Wheaton running up scores. Only eight of those 45 CCIW games played last year -- about 17% -- were one-score games. Another five were two-score games, so if you're the kind of fan who prefers a reasonably close football game (a 16-point spread or less), only around 29% of the league's games in 2022 would've been to your liking.

It's startling how uncompetitive the vast majority of CCIW football games really are.

The "Big Three" conversation seems so long ago.

Cards set to welcome 90ish first year players to the program Tuesday when camp opens.  With approximately 90 returning players, it will be quite the crowded practice field early on!  Cards return a bunch but the big questions will be who opens up at RB and DE come game 1 against Roosevelt.  My guess would be a host of guys at RB playing and there are quite a few capable ones.

Interesting news coming out of NCC basketball.  ::)

Stay tuned...

Figueroa leaving and Vince Kmiec getting promoted?  You have to read a page or two back any time you come with gossip or news.

Just waiting on official news instead of rumor. But thanks for the lesson...
