I'm a little confused by this statement from a Janesville Gazette article:
QuoteMiddle Georgia State is an NAIA team that is officially opening its season this weekend. The Knights went 3-5 last season, with two forfeit victories.

I checked the NAIA site for participating football programs and didn't see them listed.

Not sure if this was covered before, but as a club team, I assume they don't adhere to the same participation rules? For instance, can anybody play on their team?

Pat Coleman

Agreed, I see the same thing -- Middle Georgia State is an NAIA member but their football program is not. Presumably they are not bound by regular NAIA participation rules, but the school could follow them regardless.

Per their website, the football team is a member of the NCFA (National Club Football Association). UW-Milwaukee also has an entry in the NCFA.

Yeah that's what I saw on that MGSU website. Not sure if they have plans to move the program up to actual NAIA level. I know Lawrence Tech (the team my Alma Mater lost to last week) played a club football team to open the season (Oakland).

I'm thinking UWO will be up against it again tomorrow. Their opponent, Lincoln of MO, played a D1 team (Mo State) last week and held their own for the most part. They were up 10-0 for a bit. They were down 35-17 in the third, so not a blow out. Will UWO be able to score on them?
One thing for sure, UWO will be looking forward to the start of conference play.

I'm looking forward to the UWP game vs. Thomas More.

Fun fact about Middle Georgia: Head coach Kiwaukee Thomas had an 8-year NFL playing career.

While it would be interesting to see if Whitewater scores 100, I think I'll be at Middle Wisconsin for the Spud Bowl 5K and the fries (and the Spud Bowl game, of course). Might be the Pointers best shot at a dub.

Also really curious to see who lines up at QB for the Titans tomorrow... and for how long they stay there.

Definitely an odd weekend for the WIAC.  Platteville is the only team playing a D-III team this weekend.  And the Pioneers are playing Thomas More who is playing in their last D-III season! Five games agains non-D-III teams.  Maybe other schools are starting to experience what UW-W and UW-O have had to deal with for awhile now.

A pretty uneven Saturday for the WIAC. IMO, really disappointing losses for LaCrosse, River Falls, and Platteville. UW-W did what they should do against an inferior team. UW-O got the win, but the 11 first downs doesn't exactly signify an offensive turnaround.  Point got done what LC and RF should have against NAIA teams.

I don't even know what to think about Platteviille.  Coming into the season, some thought this might be the year LaCrosse or UW-P might crash the Whitewater/Oshkosh party at the top of the conference. I'm not feeling it.

The Falcon loss was a surprise considering a 30-3 win over them last season and the 0-3 record they had  prior to the game. But, they are big and skilled, and I heard from a questionable source that they have 25 "scholarships." At any rate they were  much better than a year ago. They had a 5/10" 210 lb. rb who rambled for 172 yards, mostly up the middle. Had we had Jacobson at NG, a player Kevin Bullis called the best D lineman in the WIAC a year ago, their running game might not have prospered. The Falcons did lead the league in rushing D last season.
Obviously, I'm trying to rationalize a loss. Now, in order to win 5 games, four must come in the conference. RF's best record under Walker has been three straight 4-6 seasons. That is not a criticism of Walker. This is one tough league as everybody who follows it knows. It's still possible, but more difficult the way it looks.

MESSAGE TO RECRUITS:  IN DOUBT? ENROLL AT STOUT. DON'T CARE? GO TO EAU CLAIRE. AT A LOSS? TRY LACROSSE. FEELIN' OUTTA JOINT? YOUR PLACE IS POINT. DON'T LIKE THE REST? DO WHAT'S BEST!

GOT BALLS? PLAY FOR THE FALLS!

UWO Titan 78

While the video feed from Lincoln was uninspiring, I was more impressed with the offensive play of the Titans. First, they improved in their 3rd and 4th down conversions (7/15 combined). This is going to be a run first offense, so they have to keep the chains moving. They are still having trouble running the ball. It is still yet to be seen, if this is a product of the competition, or if they have taken a step back in this category. Radovich made some improvements. This may have been because he saw more practice snaps and was better prepared, or that he was just more comfortable with the speed of the game. He made good decisions and he made some good throws. The playcalling even gave him some shots down the field. One drop on a long ball, and he would've thrown for over 200 yards. Drops happen, and 200 yards isn't great, but it is a start. It will be interesting to see if Radovich has earned the starting job going forward. There still don't seem to be a ton of playmakers, and we will need to win games on defense. The thing is, if we score 20 points, we will win games with this defense. We may win some with less. We should be in every game, and every game should be a 4-quarter affair. Our defense is strong, and our specialists look very solid. I'm confident this coaching staff will put us in position to win every week.

I was going to try to watch the UWP game while cleaning the garage, but when I tuned in late first quarter, it was 21-0. I tuned out, had a quiet moment for the downfall of Thomas More and went about my work. What the heck happened?

On UWL, I have no idea about Dickenson State. We do know UWL beat IWU, victors yesterday over Wheaton. I'd rather compare D3 results. It will be interesting if UWL loses ranking points.

UWO may not have the play makers of the past, but holy cow they've had a really tough first three games to prepare them for conference.

UWW's Alex Peete is a tough-minded football player in addition to being an excellent running back. One of these times he's going to break that 2nd/3rd level tackler and go for the long one.

The D is so good I felt sorry for Middle Georgia.

NAIA football is no joke. Yeah, "athletic scholarships," but it just different math in the same equation. They draw the same kids D3s do.

Scheduling club teams is horrible. Hope everybody made some money and nobody got hurt.
