Nice clip, repete.  Big fella.  He doesn't look out of place with those other monsters, size wise.  I hope he makes the team and picks up a few game reps.  Would be a spectacular opening season for him.

Rumor has it that mixing Gatorade, eggs, peanut butter, and cottage cheese is the cure for COVID. At the very least, it'll help everyone around you to keep their social distancing.

I saw this blurb on Bartch today:

Quote3.Bartch has something. A fair expectation for offensive lineman Ben Bartch is to give him this year to acclimate from Division III St. John's University to the NFL. It is after all, a really big jump. On Monday, the first day in full pads, he gave me a reason to pay attention to him this summer. He lined up against Jernigan in one-on-one pass drills and handled Jernigan with excellent footwork and even better hand position. I know that was Jernigan's first day on the field, but the technique from Bartch was on point and something you don't necessarily see from guys in their first camp – no matter the level of their college experience. There's a lot to like about this kid. Though we shouldn't expect to see it this year, it's nice to have a "jar on the shelf," which is to say a talented player who you can form your future around. You have to have young talent waiting in the wings. I think they've got a talented one in Bartch.

The J-Club and SJU announced the next class of the J-Club Hall of Honor yesterday.

https://gojohnnies.com/news/2020/8/19/baseball-sju-announces-j-club-hall-of-honor-class-to-be-inducted-in-2021.aspx

This class would have been honored this fall but because of social distancing restrictions their enshrinement will happen in the fall of 2021. Six of the inductees have a strong connection to football, as does our J-Club Distinguished Service honoree. Below is a list of inductees, with short bios from the SJU release for the football honorees.

-George Durenberger '28: SJU's first three-time All-MIAC honoree (1925-27 in football), Durenberger coached multiple sports at his alma mater and served as the Johnnies' athletic director for 42 years (1931-72). During that time, he presided over the addition of a number of new sports and the construction of several new facilities. The men's MIAC all-sports trophy is named in his honor.

-Chuck Froehle '57: Froehle was SJU's first four-time All-MIAC football honoree and three-time All-American, and was one of the key components on Gagliardi's early teams.

-Jim Lehman '56: Lehman, like Froehle, was another star on Gagliardi's early football teams in Collegeville. He was a two-time All-American at halfback and scored 16 touchdowns in nine games in 1955.

-Joe Mucha '66: Mucha was an All-American center on the Johnnie basketball team in 1965-66 and was also a member of SJU's 1963 and 1965 NAIA national champion football teams. He currently serves as a member of the SJU Board of Trustees.

-Jeff Norman '78: Norman orchestrated Gagliardi's quadruple-option offense for three seasons at quarterback and served as the team's kicker, where he booted the game-winning field goal as time expired for the 1976 NCAA Division III national championship. He earned All-America honors in 1977 and batted .331 with 11 home runs for the SJU baseball team.

-1965 football team: The second national championship in three seasons for SJU and legendary head coach John Gagliardi, the Johnnies defeated Linfield (Ore.) 33-0 in that year's NAIA national championship game. SJU allowed a total of 20 points in nine regular-season games, including six shutouts, and surrendered 112.1 yards per game.

-John Deters '92: Swimming & Diving.
-Jim Gathje '86: Track & Field/Cross Country
-Vedie Himsl '38: Baseball
-Terry Leiendecker '84: Soccer
-Joe Schoolmeesters '09: Golf
-Gary Svendsen '72: Wrestling
-Vic Moore '72: J-Club Distinguished Service Award

-Gary Svendsen '72: Wrestling

Quote-Gary Svendsen '72: Svendsen was a three-time MIAC champion and a two-time National Catholic Invitational champion wrestler. He also won the 1972 NAIA national title at 134 pounds and finished his career with a program-record .921 winning percentage (105-9 record).

Gary was a teammate of my dad's.  I'd heard the name before but didn't realize quite how bad-ass he was.  I sent the article to my dad--he said that once at the national tournament, Gary beat an opponent, but there was some question around the score, so they made them re-wrestle the match, and Gary won again.  :D

Svendsen was SJU's first individual national champion in any sport. He did it at the NAIA level which would have included scholarship and/or the equivalent of DII athletes as well.

His brother, Tom, was a tough wrestler, too, from the stories I have heard (both were 3X MIAC champs).  I went to a SJU wrestling alum event at BWP with a few buddies and my dad last winter.  It was awesome to meet a few of Dad's teammates and hear stories from back then!  It was also great to reconnnect with Fr. Don!

That's awesome, Faunch.  I've seen clips (John used to show us what he referred to as "the classics" i.e. plays that were executed to perfection), but I have never seen the entire game.  I will have to make some time for that.

OK! OK! I'll watch the 1976 Stagg Bowl. But, I will not watch the 2003 Stagg Bowl.
I think you guys cheated. You brought in that guy from the NFL. What was his name? Blake Elliott? Yeah, that's it! Blake Elliott. The whole game should have been called for a personal foul.
Well maybe we'll meet again. So put that in your beer mug and drink it!  ;D 🏈  🍺  8-)

Thanx for sharing - was fun to see equipment being worn that I was familiar with, for better or worse - sagging knee pads and all.

The PA Announcer made a mistake.  21 was from Havre De Grace, Maryland.
What a wild finish to that game.  A little more exciting than the only other time Towson made it to an NCAA title game, 2013, where they were crushed by the Bison 35-7.
