lighten up a tad Drake... while EV may come first in the district's name. Watkins has the larger population (altho EV has the 'gentleman's club' while Watkins has a nursing home  :()  If we country bumpkins are supposed to know that Robbinsdale Armstrong and Robbinsdale Cooper aren't even in Robbinsdale, you city slickers should at least look at the name of the kid's hometown as it appears on the roster   :)

Back in the day, Watkins didnt even belong to a public school district. Kids from town went to St. Boniface High in Cold Spring. When the bishop of St. Cloud closed SBHS, there was a lot of had feelings betwen Watkins and the other three towns in Rocori (ROckville, COld Spring and RIchmond-- so it is not "Cold Spring Rocori" as some tv/radio morons call it) and Watkins was jammed into what had been the Eden Valley district.

Enough ancient history..... any word whether the NCAA wkill be reprimanding Hamline or will they wait till the RW Rep Eagle runs its expose and then be forced to take drastic action?  :D

It sounds like the D-I potential transfer isn't switching to a MIAC school, much less to UST....UST palyer to watch next year might be Sames. I see him filling the Weaver role off the ench

After watching the Kessler speech clip on the Pioneer Press site, it didnt seem to be as big of of deal as the Strib made it out to be--- far from a "near riot"... still, the comments were iout of place at a commencement speech, unless given at Falwell's school   But considering Kessler's career plans- smeinary @ the Vastican, the ordination- it doesn't shock me that he has less-than-liberal views. He just picked a dumb place & time to give them.

Drake-

Linz isn't from Eden Valley. he is from Watkins, ther better half of that district...hometown of Gene McCarthy, Mandy Pearson, Matt Stommes of the Gophers, and yours truly. We Watkinsites  get along fine with our neighbors to the west, but do not like being cofused with Eden Valleyites  :)   (Also for the record, Watkins is more or less south of St. Cloud--- follow Couty Road 2 from St. Joe thru Cold SPring, wave at Rocori High, proceed 10 miles and you stumble onto the 3 blk long main street). Stop out in early August for Kraut & Wurst Daze-- it makes the Aquatennial look lame.

As good as Luke is, I think his youjnger sister may be better  (does that sound famiiliar WW?  ;D) She was an All-Stater this winter as a freshman.

That said, I dont think it can be said that Cord has a monopoly on EVW grads-- wheil they landed Mandy & Luke, Alex Neisen, a teammate of Luke's, is at SJU, Neissen's dad (SJU) and unlce (St O). several Watkins kids have played baseball for SCSU and SW Mo St, and Shane Henfling is a soph QB at Carleton. Not bad for a town of "650 people and a few crouches" as the billboard welcoming you to Watkins used to proclaim, until they won the town team state baseball championship in 01.

Don't be jealous, Maniac.  At least you're not an Augsburg Tech alum.  Their men and women finished 11th :o
No jealousy, Duff....just wishing UST hired coaches that would give it a better balance between the championship winning sports & those coming short...no shame in 2nd or 3ven 3rd, but bottom half? THERE is shame

I am jealous of ROR....not everyone gets quoted in Lor S's Op-Ed column as a source of wisdom & news.... how'd you swing that ROR? (do we want to know?) ;)

The Johnnies are MIAC All-Sports champs!

Yep, congrats for a balanced program.... even though UST had 5 championships to SJU's 2, the Js had better balance across the board. Swimming, golf, tennis and (not surprisingly) football proved to be the key differences.

Yes, WW, the Gusties were the only d3 team to beat UST softball (impressed that you knew the count of the streak, since no one cares :) )-- from what I hear, it was an incredible game. But they got paid back twice in the MIAC playoffs. Conway hit one HR in the 2nd round that was still rising as it cleared the fence-- opposite field. SHe needs a massive HR count this weekend to break the d3 all-time career record, but its not ouot of reach. Lenoch closed an incredile career for your Gusties... she owns every meaningful offensive career record down there.

JR - You could have easily offset said comment by referencing the Tommie choke in the recent baseball playoffs -- top seed losing to #4 Hamline in the first game of the MIAC tourney after breezing through the conference at 16-4.

Maybe so, but they got in the NCAA field, and that's all that counts...not like many other MAIC baseball teams can say that :D (including the two teams that lost to Olaf)

JR-- I know it was hard for you to cheer UST softballers on, but you can bank on them bringing home that softball title....3 in a row has never been done before, but after seeing them play a couple of times, Id be stunned if they lost...and with it being double elimination, they'd have to lose 2X this weekend....and have only lost 1 game to a d3 team all year

it sounds like they have more than enough coming back next year to go for 4
******

RIP, Rich Hall.....a great man, unquestionably

This should put a proud smile on the faces of all SJU posters:

On the male side, I don't think the Selection Committee could have gone wrong with any of the three finalists, but Matt was clearly the best candidate. Ditto for Vig on the Female side.

I believe use of the word "retarded" is hate speech. Any student of a liberal arts college full of self-righteous activists knows this. Hasn't the Orwellian movement to DoubleSpeak reached Moorhead/The Pacific Northwest yet? You can't say "retarded," "gay," "black," or "Indian" anymore. Please refrain from degrading the board with such hateful speech in future posts. And please, let's not use heights to quantify players. It's not fair to less vertically inclined individuals. Do you mean to imply that a 6-10 player is more apt to be a post than a 5-5 one? Who's to say? That's heightism, and I don't have to take it. As a 6-7 post, I was forced to suffer through years of coaches blindly assuming I couldn't play guard just because I was tall. Let's put an end to ignorance and intolerance once and for all.
Shocker,

Please advise as to the politically correct term for Mr. Sweeney of UST.  Is he a skin head, folically challenged or just plain Bald?

Nites-
Actually, none of the above apply to Sweeney, or to his brother Mike. Their dad is courageously  battling cancer. Undergoing chemo & radiation, he lost all his hair (a very common side effect). The sons shaved their heads to show their love & support of their father.

Hopefully, you feel as stupid as your post was  :)

sound like CAR has a good shot at getting a 6'3" wing out of seattle, WA who made a visit to the college this weekend...he was a high school teammate of Martell Webster who was the 6th overall draft pick in last years nba draft by the portland jailblazers

How does that happen? A kid from Seattle ends up in Minnesota. There must be a connection we don't know about.
CAR gets a lot of students from the Seattle area....Cord had a pipeline to the area at one time for hoops, so anything's possible, I guess

loco-what is the relationship (if any) between the Gonsior you mention and the one who played or plays at Olaf (Ted, I think)?

All quiet on the gossip/rumor front here other than some vague word from Cobberville abuot a bumper crop of recruits... I wonder if Soren Nelson will steer any Duke rejects to Moorhead?

no firm word on any potential trasfers, altho there was a voice mail waiting for me last night form someone claiming to be Adam Morrison, wanting to rent a room for the 06-07 school year while he played for St. Thomas  ::)  Maybe he'll be Willie's new whipping boy next year  :)

Sumander-- I don't think its a word either, but all the words I could think of to use in place of it are unprintable!  ;D

Do I go to the women's board to read about the drama at the U of MN men's basketball team?   ;D

That said, I agree that (1) Maturi is in waaaay over his head and has no clue how to run a HS athletic dept, much less a major college's; (2) Borton is a horrible coach, both on and off the court and should be replaced by yesterday; (3) Monson & Mason are as inept as Borton but with slightly better 'people skills', managing to keep most of their players. They both need to go, too.

If the U canned Maturi and all three coaches and was willing to spend the $$ to bring in some top-flight people to replace them, then maybe the U athletics would be worth giving a rip about. The sad fact is that the four fools will continue in their present positions for the foreseeable future. But give the U points for consistency: 40 years of mediocrity or patheticness in football, no untainted men's Final Four appearances ever and a women's program that is rapidly returning to its tradition of the first 20 years or so-- utterly pathetic.

For as long as I can remember, the U has bungled athletics, with rare exceptions in hockey & wrestling, although hockey would be hard for even the U to screw up, given the talent pool in its backyard. (Over the past 6-8 years, MN has produced as many D-I full scholarship women's basketball players as any othe state-- sadly, nearly all of them have gone to colleges out of state.)

Willy-
You might want to mention to the Speaker that, in addition to the Twins being free to go anywhere they may want after this season, Selig & Company can contract up to two teams after this season at their discretion.

It's in the CBA that if the owners give the player's union notice on or by July 1, 2006 as to which team or teams they plan to contract for 2007, the union will accept said contraction without argument/lawsuit.

Without a stadium deal, I'd say the twins & Tampa bay will be contracted and the Marlins will be sold to a group including our good friend Red McCombs and moved to San Antonio.
