So, Holland beats #6 Calvin and #1 Trine in the MIAA tournament, loses to #11 Case Western in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament, and drops three spots? I'd like to see Holland O'fer for a season, and I think that's ridiculous.

Hope made the round of 32, you'll get some variance in where voters placed them among those 32 teams.  Some higher some lower.  They needed to win the Whitewater and Platteville games to stick in the top 25 poll most of the season.  They really weren't in that conversation until the MIAA tournament.  A few noticed an 18 point win over someone in late January but that was some brief votes.

They played Platteville very tough and probably should have won that one in early December.  Otherwise the non-conference schedule did not have much of a take notice factor.

There wasn't much difference between Trine, Calvin, Hope and Platteville and a number of other teams by years end.  Play that tournament 10 times you probably get 6 or 7 different winners this  year.  That's why the tournament is fun.

All three MIAA teams got some trophies, fun year overall.  Some surprises, some not.

Quote from: Flying Dutch Fan on March 18, 2024, 02:26:57 PMFigured I would take a look at how our "recruit" list (incoming FR and transfers) prior to this season panned out.  So here is a list for each school, and what percentage of their minutes, points, rebounds, and assists came from those players:

Team   Incoming   Recruits    Minutes    Points    Rebounds    Assists
Adrian   FR  60.3020.33  0.289 0.26
---   ---  ---------  --- ---
Albion   FR  60.1470.147  0.148 0.182
---   ---  ---------  --- ---
Alma   FR  60.1310.118  0.076 0.066
---   ---  ---------  --- ---
Calvin   FR  20.0660.065  0.034 0.092
Transfer  20.0620.05  0.053 0.037
All  40.1280.115  0.087 0.129
---   ---  ---------  --- ---
Hope   FR  30.1240.079  0.125 0.128
Transfer  10.0590.057  0.033 0.028
All  40.1830.136  0.158 0.156
---   ---  ---------  --- ---
Kalamazoo   FR  30.120.109  0.116 0.051
Transfer  10.0190.016  0.018 0.011
All  40.140.125  0.134 0.062
---   ---  ---------  --- ---
Olivet   FR  70.4640.469  0.489 0.343
Transfer  10.0030.003  0.001 0.003
All  80.4670.472  0.49 0.346
---   ---  ---------  --- ---
Trine   FR  10.0210.006  0.027 0.016
Transfer  30.3860.464  0.223 0.444
All  40.4070.47  0.25 0.461

Some significant numbers there and varying significantly between the really young teams with lots of FR contributing (Adrian and Olivet) and Trine with the transfers.

Couple notes

I like Adrian Fr. Darius Welch a lot, unfortunately he hurt his shoulder very early in the season and was hampered by it all year.  Word is he'll need surgery this off season.  A healthy Darius could make a big impact next year.

Olivet's best player was probably Fr. Lee Hardy who couldn't play after the 1st semester a pairing with a quickly developing Schipper would have been a tough low post duo in league play.

Alma has the most to replace, though I don't know how many can use the "covid year". 7 of the top 8 or 9 were listed as Sr's this past season.

5-20 Olivet beat a National Champion.

Quote from: Greek Tragedy on March 16, 2024, 07:59:43 PMSo is everyone eligible to come back next year for Trine? I believe Trent Cox is done, right? I know Cortez transferred, but I don't know how many years he played at Albion.

(graduated in 2022).  It seems like his eligibility should be up.

Fred played 3 years at Albion, so I'd be surprised if he didn't use his COVID year and return next year.

Megnanglo, Cortez Garland and Brent Cox are all out of eligibility.

Quote from: FyteOnne on March 16, 2024, 08:17:38 PMNext year should be the final "covid year" players.

Cortez played 4 years at Albion (graduated in 2022).  It seems like his eligibility should be up.

Cortez took the "covid year" or 5th year granted to all NCAA athletes from 2021 despite not playing a year ago.

Congrats to Trine and Coach Miller, very tough team to beat all year.  Its been a long climb.  Anyone who's made a Final Four will tell you need some luck and good fortune along the way but once you're there anything can happen.  Great season really from start to finish.

Overway is as complete a C as you can have in D3.  There are probably a dozen maybe slightly more teams in all of D3 that have the size and depth to deal with him in a physical manner.  You're bound to run into 1 or 2 of those in the tournament.

Trinity was  a top 5 team all year from a conference with a lot of D3 mens basketball hardware laying around.

A very nice season for Hope.  I never gave this team much chance to win the MIAA with a really stupid 5 game swing of Calvin twice,Trine twice and Albion in between before January ended.  Good luck to whoever gets that garbage schedule next year.   And btw, I think its dumb Calvin had Trine had equally stupid 4 game stretches against each other and Hope twice.

Hope's non-conference schedule ended up being a touch to weak to garner a Pool C on its merits and the tough losses to Whitewater and Platteville in the span of 4 days likely meant Hope would have to win the MIAA tournament to continue their season.  To their credit they pulled it off again.

Anyway, I told you what would happen a long time ago.   :)  ;)
Quote from: sac on September 14, 2023, 11:22:37 PMTrine and Calvin have put together very good rosters that Hope can beat again in the MIAA Tournament.  ;)

Pretty sure 2007 was a QOWI year.

Found this tucked deep in the Pool C thread
Quote from: Ryan Scott (Hoops Fan) on February 27, 2006, 08:22:27 AMOut of curiosity, who do you think were "left on the table" when LaCrosse got in last? Here's mine:

NE: Trinity
E: NYU
A: New Jersey
MA: Hopkins
S: HPU
GL: Albion?
M: WashU

Any thoughts?

At the very least Elmhurst was behind WashU maybe, and a later brief discussion on a "D3 NIT" shows Elmhurst as the next MW Region team behind WashU.

So maybe they're on the board in 2007 with more Pool C's, only 18 that year.

Lots of opponent compares Manchester, North Central, Olivet, Hanover and the most interesting being Anderson losing 76-79 to Trine.

The Ravens can score a lot of points.

Anyone is capable of a deep run with the right draw.

I have about 23 years of MIAA efficiency data and all 3 teams would have a difficult time cracking our top 10 though.  But all 3 teams rate higher than Alma's quarterfinal team so anything can happen.

Quote from: KnightSlappy on February 25, 2024, 05:14:42 PMHas MIAA ever gotten three teams into the tournament, or will this be the first time?

First time.

Closest I think was 2006   Hope, Calvin and a 20-6 Albion team (Brandon Crawford) that probably should have gotten in.  Pre-current system.

Hope AQ

Trine and Calvin will almost certainly get in.  I think the only doubt is where Carnegie Mellon is ranked and if Calvin dropped behind them which I can't see happening.  Carnegie should end up being the last Region 7 team on the pool c board.

Yes, Trine and Calvin should both be safely in.

Not that it matters but I'd be interested to see who ends up higher on the final regional rankings, Hope or Calvin.

It does matter for seeding, but I think Calvin still edges Hope out there.  Even with Hope's 2-1 h2h, its close

Great tournament weekend in Angola.  All 3 games were fun to watch, every possession mattered and seemed intense.  Great atmosphere, its supposed to be tough.

--MIAA should rethink their Friday pricing.

--Quillan was the headline hero on Friday but I don't think Hope wins either game without TJ McKenzie's two outstanding performances.  Hope, as it turns out, can also play some defense.

--Loved Hope going for the back door lob late in the Trine game, bold.

Some season thoughts

---Hope's non-conf schedule wasn't quite strong enough for a Pool C on its own, their margin was probalby 6 losses and some help.  So I figured the Whitewater loss probably was going to keep them out.  Platteville would have been a monster win.  As it turned out things broke their way a bit and I think they would have been in ok shape and probably on the pool c board late in the process.

---This stretch for Hope.......

@ Calvin
Trine
Albion
Calvin
@ Trine

was bull**** and should never happen again.  Its the single reason I never thought Hope could win the league and it was going to be all about being there to win the tournament.  Seriously MIAA what are we doing here.

---No disagreements with 1st or 2nd team All-MIAA, it was hard.  Lots of good players with good stats, only one standout.   ....but I think I would have put Manny Megnanglo on the team, there has not been a more terrifying shot blocker in the this league in the years I've watched.  He constantly altered opponents attack plans.  He should get 1/2 a block for every time a player dribbled into the paint took a peak and went 'nope' and tossed it back out.  He's been great fun.

---Quite a 3 years for Hope, Calvin and Trine.
One championship for Hope
One for Calvin
Co-champ for Calvin/Trine
Hope wins all 3 tournaments
Combined 75-5 vs the rest of the league.
8 of the 9 teams won 20+ games
And its going to be 7 NCAA  appearances.

Overall
Calvin  66-17
Hope    64-23
Trine   63-17

MIAA
Calvin 36-6
Trine  34-8
Hope   33-9

Looking forward to some NCAA basketball and where these teams stack up.  Not a lot of powerhouse teams in the Great Lakes, Midwest this year.  Probably only 4 teams from the WIAC, CCIW, NCAC and OAC combined, very unusual.  Could get a couple deep runs.
