General football / Pool C 2023
October 08, 2023, 03:31:26 PM
We have 6 weeks of play and some of the "usuals" are now fighting, just for a Pool A bid, IMHO. for this exercise, let's assume everyone wins out.

OAC - John Carroll has a loss to UWW. A win over UMU might throw UMU into Pool C.

ASC - HSU (loss to Endicott) and UMHB (2-3) are out of contention for Pool C. HSU hosts UMHB on 10/28

SAA - Berry looks strong from Region 3. Has loss to Trinity, but not much else on the resume to help.

WIAC - UWW - If both UWL and UWW, run the table, then UWW would be in contention.

MIAC - Johnnies - If Johnnies lose to Bethel in the Conference Championship, might their 2 losses be too much for consideration? Bethel needs to win out.

CCIW - Wheaton - If they win out, they have a non-conference win over UWO. Only loss was to NCC, so they will look strong at 9-1.

ARC - Wartburg at 9-1 would look good if Central beats them to earn the Pool A. (Hmmm, just what is the tie-breaker in the ARC if Wart, Coe and Central are tri-champs?)

QuoteFrom the ARC website 1.7. In the case of a tie in league standings, the following will be used to determine the automatic qualifier berth in the NCAA
playoffs:
1.7.1. Head-to-head competition: The head-to-head will be the cumulative records versus the tied teams.
1.7.2. When head-to-head does not break the tie, the team(s) advancing to the NCAA Championships most recently is (are)
eliminated and the criteria returns to head-to-head competition, if necessary.
1.7.3. When head-to-head competition and elimination of the most recent playoff team does not break the tie, a coin flip will
determine the automatic qualifier. The American Rivers Commissioner and the Chair of the Management Council shall
conduct the coin flip. Other witnesses may be called on to be observers, if necessary.
1.7.4. The tie-breaker process shall always return to head-to-head competition once a team(s) has been eliminated by most
recent NCAA playoff competition.

LL- Is a 9-1 Union with a loss to Ithaca strong enough? Do losses to JHU and then Union knock an 8-2 Ithaca out of the picture, even if they win the Cortaca?

E8 - Brockport and Cortland -- Has Susquehanna dealt a lethal blow to the Pool C chances for either? Cort still has Brockport and Ithaca.

MAC - both Del Val and Leb Valley have non-conference losses to mess up their records.

Who else is on the radar? This is fun!

(Corrections and omissions are appreciated and acknowledged.)

NWC. Linfield hosting Whitworth ?   Nov 11th game. Tip of the hat to desertcat1. Does the 8-1 loser with a so-so SOS really have a chance with only 4 Pool C bids? In an expanded playoff, beyond 32-teams and with more Pool C bids, maybe.

General football / Pool C 2022
August 21, 2022, 04:20:30 PM
I know this is early to be starting the Pool C board, but ...

https://www.d3football.com/notables/2022/08/conference-teams-will-not-have-to-play-in-first-round

Conference teams playing in the 1st round.

Of course, it is much harder for that to happen with only 5 Pool C bids.

For contemplation (and we have some great non-conference games this season)

Must the loser of these games win their conference to earn a bid?

UMHB Muhlenburg
UMHB Whitewater
UWW St John's
UWW Berry
Trinity Wheaton IL
North Central Wabash

Any 2-loss WIAC team?

Others that I have not listed, after a quick run of the top half of the Top 25...

Welcome! Here is your new message board. The members of this conference have always had a strong presence in the "South" Region. It will be fun to watch this conference in the coming seasons.

The Chinese National Baseball Team is now playing with the American Association Grand Prairie (TX) Airhogs.

The goal is to make the players more competitive. This interesting article discusses some of the aspects being addressed.

Multi-Regional Topics / 2018 NCAA Tournament
February 25, 2018, 07:33:27 PM
Let's start the National Tournament board.

There is a great Hoopsville show going now.  For Newbies, the Mock Selection by D-Mack, Titan Q and Hoops Fan is very instructive the nature of the selection process.

My first thought on the bracketing.

Schreiner (SCAC Pool A bid) is within 500 miles of both ETBU (if ETBU gets a Pool C) and Sul Ross State.

If they put in a bid to host, then only one team would need to be flown to that bracket, unless LeTourneau gets off the table (almost last) and have a complete Texas bracket.

I am assuming 2 flights to Washington state in another bracket.

According the Hoopsville, Hobart came off the table for bid #21.  So Sul Ross State, probably the #2 ranked team in the South, gets flown somewhere!

Historical/statistical archive / Triple Plays
May 12, 2014, 09:50:11 PM
There were 6 triple plays in D-3 this season.

One poster on another board wondered if one player has ever hit for the infamous "Cycle", i.e., a triple play, a double play, a single out. One might add a strikeout to make it a "quadricycle".  Two players hit for the "tri-cycle".  I don't know what other name we can give it, but please make suggestions.

In the first game of the DH with North Central IL on March 21, 2014, St Norbert 3B Derek Klegin hit into the triple play plus 2 K's and a single.

On April 2, 2014, Plymouth State catcher Dan Armstrong went 2 for 4 against Babson but hit into a triple play and a double play.  (He came close to the "cycle".)

Baldwin-Wallace 2B Mark Zimmerman went 2 for 5 scoring 2 runs and 5 RBI.  He hit into a double play in the first, 6-4-3. Zimmerman grounded to second in the 3rd.  He walked and scored in the 4th. He hit a 2-RBI single to right in the 5th.  He hit a 3-run homer in the 6th. The 5-4-3 triple play occurred in the 8th.  Final score Baldwin-Wallace 16, Wooster 12.

On April 27th, Piedmont dh Patrick Lyons went 0 for 3 with an RBI in the Piedmont 5-4 victory. He walked in the 2nd inning and was out on a SAC bunt. He struck out looking in the 4th. He was given an RBI on a 1-6-3 double play in the 6th. He hit into a 6-4-3 triple play in the 8th.

UW-Stout C Jared Francois went 0-3 against UW-Stevens Point on May 9th.  He flied to CF in the 2nd.  He had the 5-4-3 triple play in the 4th.  He was out 6-3 in the top of the 7th, in the 13-3 loss in the WIAC Tourney.

On May 9th, LeTourneau DH David Perkins went 1 for 4, including  home run, hitting into a 6-4-3 triple play, ground out to SS, and  struck out looking.
