Nice article on Guilford in d3hoops.  Pretty accurate description of this year's team.

CNU85, I actually think the semis are on Thursday, March 14 at 5:30 and 8.

Quote from: CNU85 on March 09, 2024, 09:59:10 PMCongrats to Guilford. What a crazy game. Defenses were insane. And the fact that CNU held Dearman to 0-15 from the floor and then he scores winning bucket just shows what a good player he is. Never give up. You never know when 1-16 does the job. Best of luck next weekend, especially this next game!
It was a crazy, chippy, intense, defensive game.  Yep, 1/16 and he hit the winning shot!  I actually initially thought CNU's heave at the buzzer went in, then realized it only grazed the net.

Hampden-Sydney HC Kimbrough played for Guilford HC Palombo for 4 years and was his Assistant for six.  To say they know each other is an understatement!

CNU is good!  The Captains were all we could handle.  Congratulations to Christopher Newport on a great season!

Go Quakers!

I'm obviously pleased Guilford is hosting.  I was fully expecting a road trip, so I was pleasantly surprised when news started to trickle in last night.

Guilford just played two of their best games.  They're ticked off from last season and seem to be highly motivated.  I think they'll make a deep run.

Go Quakers!  Go Jackets!  Go Tigers!

Quote from: rmc1982 on March 02, 2024, 11:25:09 PMJackets get sent to Trinity College in Hartford and Guilford gets to host?? Not exactly fair to us ! RMC is the #1 seed in this region- why are they sending us up there?? We got F•CKED and didn't even get kissed!! The NCAA just didn't want 3 ODAC TEAMS HOSTING and we were the sacrificial lamb over 39 freakin miles of travel distance!!
Well, I feel your pain, but how do you think 22-6 ranked #13 Guilford felt last year when we were completely snubbed?  Three of our losses were to your #1 Jackets ... and we could have won two of those.  Also, we beat Emory by 15 at Emory and they got in!  Welcome to the vagaries of underfunded Division III hoops.

Tight game for the Quakers last night, but they pulled away from the Pfeiffer Falcons in the last 5 minutes to win 64-57.  GC now at 4-0.

Improved FT shooting this season.  Tyler Dearman had the ball a lot at the end and went 13/14 to go with 14/14 vs Emory.

Great win for the Quakers yesterday in Greensboro:

Guilford 83, Emory 80 in OT.

Lots of ties and lead changes, but Guilford prevailed.

Tyler Dearman with 31, including 14/14 FTs.  Team was 24/29 from the line.

That's an outstanding win for the Quakers. Emory had a couple of exhibition game wins against D2 opponents and are pre-season #19. Guilford is just outside the top 25, but could crack that group when the next poll comes out. There will probably be a lot of changes in the Top 25 after this next round of voting.

With a 2-2 record RMC will surely drop out of the top 25. They got a 60-51 win yesterday vs Cal Lutheran, thanks largely to a +13 rebounding margin against a significantly taller team. Still trying to figure out who plays well together. In the final minute, when Cal Lutheran was going to have to foul, I would have liked to seen Keishawn Pulley on the court to get the ball on the inbounds. He seems to be the most reliable free throw shooter the Jackets have.
Guilford fans are still pretty bitter about last season's indefensible NCAA snub.   At 22-6 and ranked #19, three of our losses were to season long #1 RMC (2 we could have won in the last seconds).  We split with HSC (including a win in the ODAC semifinals) and beat Emory by 14 in Atlanta, yet the Tigers and Eagles (and 4 other UAA teams) got in.  WTH!  I think the Quakers are on a mission this season.

Guilford 2-0 for the first time since 2017.  Schedule gets tougher, but I believe there are more wins in store.  Go Quakers!

ODAC preseason poll is out ... RMC on top.

Also, looks as though Roanoke is adding football.  Club in 2024, ODAC team in 2025.

A great season for a great team.  The three didn't fall tonight.
It was a great season for sure.

^^^ What a neat article. Thanks for mentioning it. The team Guilford beat in the first roundnof that tournament was Keene State, now also a D3 school and playing Swarthmore tonight. It also mentions that they beat the Augustana Vikings a couple of rounds later in the semi-finals. There are several Augustanas, but if it's the one in Rock Island, IL, it, too is now a D3 school.

Here's a link to the article: https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2023-03-07/50-years-later-1973-guilford-mens-basketball-team-reminisces-their-naia-national

Here's the bracket for that tournament: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_NAIA_basketball_tournament. It was the now D3 Augustana from Illinois. Quite a few other participating schools are also now D3. The NAIA was more prominent back then.
It was indeed the Augustana in Rock Island.  I was interviewed and quoted for my memories of that season and championship night.  BTW, I still have the car.

Guilford has a lot of returning players in 2023-24 so they will probably have another great season.  I predict the Quakers will go 27-1 and be ranked #5 nationally.

Guilford, however, will probably NOT make the NCAA tournament due to all 8 UAA teams being selected.  (BTW, all 5 UAA teams picked this year are already out including Emory, a team we beat by 15 in Atlanta!  Some UAA selectees had losing conference records ... we were 13-3 with 2 close losses to #1 RMC.)

And yes, Guilford fans are not happy.

Tigers host!  First game is against Emory (17-8).

Unsurprisingly, the Yellow Jackets host.  Sadly, the Quakers didn't get a bid.

ODAC deserved 3 teams but with the upsets yesterday I knew either HSC or Guilford would be left out.  Good luck to RMC and HSC in the NCAA tourney!
22-6 overall
13-3 in a tough conference (all losses to Top 25 teams)
Made it to the finals of the conference tournament
Three losses to #1 team in the country - could have beaten them in 2 of those games
Beat Emory by 15 at Emory
Beat HSC in the conference tournament semifinals
Ranked 13th in the nation

Did not make the tournament.

The system is broken.
Hasa, I feel your pain.  As you know, I've made the case for GC and won't repeat myself here.  As the conference championship upsets were happening over the weekend, I kept thinking it was hurting HSC more than GC, simply based on the H2H win by GC (again, what have you done lately) and HSC was limping in with 2 losses in last three games.  After watching Hoopsville, I now know that the NCAA regional rankings are the basis of the selection process, and GC was a victim of those rankings.  If up to me (and sounds like many others) GC would be in, even before HSC.
Can you imagine the outcry if this happened in D1?  D3 is the bastard stepchild of the NCAA.
