I have always wondered about Colorado College's persistence in D3. They have "grandfathered" men's ice hockey and have scholarship women's soccer, so "Scholarship" athletics is not an anathema. It seems travel would be much easier if they went D-2 and played in the Rocky Mountain AC.

I can imagine a #4 conference tourney seed, getting hot and going deep in the NCAA's.

March 19, 2024, 11:38:04 AMQuote from: Pat Coleman on March 18, 2024, 10:08:19 AMThe super short version:
-> There are athletic programs trying to get away from Mary Hardin-Baylor, hence leaving the ASC.
-> The SCAC has a reputation of having higher academic standards, which is attractive for schools.
-> However, the SCAC no longer really lives up to that reputation, so Trinity and Southwestern left for the SAA, which does generally feature schools with higher academic standards.
More background on the SAA...
Trinity and Southwestern have long been members of the Associated Colleges of the South. It is a mission and vision thing. Centenary was D-1 for the first two decades of that organization's existence.

HSU should not feel badly about their performance in the Sweet 16. NYU trounced Scranton in the next round.

I will temper my exuberance concerning the 13-5 win by McMurry over UW-Whitewater. They really got to pitchers Eli Frank (Junior, Bay Port, WI) and Cade Hansen (a sophomore who played at New Braunfels Smithson Valley).
Looks like the UWW coach was trying out his bullpen staff against a middle-of-the road ASC team.

March 11, 2024, 01:58:58 PMQuote from: Bmo on March 10, 2024, 10:07:55 PMDumb question probably, but I noticed this footnote on ASC baseball standings page.I think that UT-Tyler's paperwork began after the "title". I also think that this applies to UTD, who is moving to D-2.
https://ascsports.org/standings.aspx?path=baseball
It says that Sul Ross is "Ineligible for ASC and NCAA Championships (NCAA Division II reclassifying)." Wouldn't UT Dallas also be ineligible? Didn't UT Tyler win the national championship the year before they reclassified? Why would Sul Ross be treated differently?

The TIAA was only AC, HSU, HPU McMurry and SRSU and competed in the NAIA.

March 09, 2024, 02:58:18 PMQuote from: The Third Division on February 26, 2024, 09:27:04 PMHow did the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association operate differently from the ASC? Were there differing politics involved? Why was a new conference formed in '96 in the first place? Why couldn't everyone stay in the same conference under the same name?I have not stirred those memories in a long time.
Founding members were Howard Payne University, Austin College, Hardin–Simmons University, McMurry University, Mississippi College, Sul Ross State University, the University of Dallas and the University of the Ozarks. Only 6 schools played football.
The first commissioner was a very powerful influential man. He came from the old Southwest Conference after that conference fell apart. (Arkansas to the SEC and then A&M, UT, Baylor and Tech to the Big XII.) He was chosen to move the schools from NAIA to D-3.
Mississippi College moved from D-2 to D-3. They had had to "vacate" a season about 1994. I do not recall the reasons.
A new president hired at McMurry in 1994. Dr Robert Shimp was a strong advocate for a "strong, vibrant, very championship oriented' McMurry athletic program.
The ASC sought new D-3 programs, colleges willing to leave their current athletic alignment and join within the next 5-6 years
Concordia TX
ETBU
LeTourneau
Louisiana College
Texas Lutheran
Schreiner
UMHB.
.. and some to add football as an attractor for new students: ETBU, LaCollege, TLU and UMHB.
Wikipeida has a pretty good chronology of the ASC.

General Division III issues / Re: Dartmouth decision and DIII Student-Athletes as Employees?

I am glad that Ron opened up a board on which we can discuss this.
I have plenty of questions about how and why it should/not apply to D-3.
How many D-3 colleges will close if athletics is not an enticement to attend?
One already sees "Tik-Tok" shorts encouraging guys to go to trade school instead of college, because they will make more money. You also read of CEO's who preferentially pay/hire non-white or female candidates.
Can we imagine what D-3 will look like in 5 years?
