Title: The saddest days of the year
Post by: jknezek on December 19, 2011, 06:17:57 PM
Does anyone else find it to be one of the saddest days of the year when the football section on d3boards.com drops down below the winter sports? Seriously, it has to rank in my top 15 or so...

There is an old story of Texas High School football from Breckenridge Texas back in the 1950's when the Breckenridge High School Buckaroos were playing "up a classificaiton" and still winning the state championship...

The Buckaroos won the Championship on Saturday December 18, and the old codger wondered what he would be doing that would be as exciting the next weekend.

No kidding. I don't know how many times I've been caught - by either my boss/or coworkers - being on the D3football or d3boards website at work over the past six months.

the saddest day to me is the return trip from salem.  having been going to games since the first week of september, this will be a tough transition to doing nothing on saturday.  well, at least i have the next 8 months to figure out how and where i will be going next year.  at least i get to check back to see if scheduels have been released so i can work on the travel agenda.  if you know of a good game next year and are within 4 hours of philly, let me know and i will look into coming to your place to watch a game.

BashDad,
My son graduated in 2004 after playing in the Stagg Bowl.  I have still often attended UMHB games and go watch my alma mater Austin College.  I got hooked on D3 football and have enjoyed it nearly as much since the boy graduated.  I have attended the Stagg Bowl every year but one since he played in it.  It is extra special when he has a weekend when his coaching duties allow him to go with me!

You don't have to give it up!!  ;D

No,  but it sure is much more fun when you are watching your son and his friends play. My son will be a senior next year and I hope the season does not fly by as fast as this one has.

BashDad, you could be a wacko like me and drive over 3000 miles in one year to watch games that your kid has nothing to do with anymore.  D3 football is fun to me and I still go all over the place to see games.  I have also made many a friend around the east coast that make the travel more fun.  If you have been lucky enough to also do that, then keep going out to watch games.  Roocru is one of the friends that I have been lucky to meet since my son played at Wesley, ending in 2008.  I have not stopped going since then either.  Maybe roocru and I are just 2 really weird people, but I dont think so since I meet up with some folk from Bridgewater each year and they are just as crazy.

That's why I like how the season ends around the holidays, so you enjoy spending time with the family and don't miss the football as much.

January is when it really hits.

Fortunately, where I worked 80% of the staff are sports fans and tend to do it themselves from time to time.

Jokes aside, web traffic analyses find that traffic spikes around lunchtime, peaks around 2 and holds steady til about 5 or 6, then plummets.

If it wasn't for people trying to get through the day, sports websites would cease to exist ... more or less.

The only day more sad  was yesterday when the final seconds ticked off the clock and my son walked off the field for the very last time. Next August will feel strange, not dropping him off at camp and next fall will find me with no more games to attend. Now I have no excuses for "getting things done" arond the house. Any other senior parents feel the same way?

I must have walked past you on the stairs at the Metrodome on Saturday! I forgot whose parent you were. What did he think of the experience?

He thought it was a great experience! He said it was better run than the other game. Playing in the dome, getting a chance to talk to players from some of the teams he played against, made the experience a good one. He said his coaches were nice guys and the practices were well planned for an All- Star game.Overall, he would recommend the game to others. The only awkward moment came when he stepped into the hotel elevator with his NC sweats on only to share the ride with the Redlands players. I think it's a great opportunity for guys to get one last game AND meet players from around the country.

The National Bowl. While he did enjoy the game and the trip and the coaches there as well, he just thought the whole atmosphere of the All-American game was nicer. I enjoyed both games.

Thanks, that helps. I talked to one of the other players, who also played in the D3 Senior Classic, and he said the D3 Senior Classic is better organized still.

Behind the scenes, All-American Bowl could certainly have been better staffed and organized. I mean, where else could I walk in at halftime and take over as public address announcer? Bizarre. :)

The Dream Bowl charges $550 to the player.  What kind of a dream is that? :o

Yeah, finished game 1 and did the anthem and PA for game 2.

Dream Bowl is brand new, I believe. Don't know much about it other than they are active on Twitter.

Yes, Baseball!

The West Region has had 4 of the last 6 National Champions, one team from each of the 4 conferences.  In fact, last year's champion, UT-Tyler was the eliminated in the ASC tourney semifinals. They were thought to be the last Pool C team taken. They were shipped out-of-region to the Central where they went 6-1. Then they beat Texas Lutheran from the SCAC is the national championship finals.

Talk about balanced and tough! That is the West Region.  Follow the West Region teams on D3baseball.com and the message boards.
