General Basketball / Traumatic head injuries in hoops
September 14, 2010, 01:28:58 PM
There's been a lot of discussion lately about concussions, particularly in football, and the many problems that can result.  Here's a blog/article from the New York Times that makes the point that concussions are increasingly common in basketball as well, especially in youth girls' hoops.  I find it a very interesting read.

There are many potential reasons for an increase in reported injuries in hoops, as the article suggests.  More reporting, more participants, looser officiating, etc.  However, one line from the comments section really resonates with me:
Quote from: Steve Ongley, commenter #3My son's basketball coach summed it up nicely, "It used to be only football was a contact sport. Now basketball's a contact sport, and football is a collision sport."

General Basketball / Webcasts and video services
November 13, 2009, 03:27:52 PM
I coulda sworn there was already a thread on this subject, somewhere, but I'm durned if I can find it.  I think we could make good use of a thread devoted to watching D3 sports streamed live on the web: what schools offer it, what services are available, etc.

Tonight's exhibition game between Kenyon and The Citadel is available (via The Citadel) on a service called Baksetball-online.tv.  This is a fee-charging service (one-time subscription fee for one to three years) that promises "Thousands of Channels," "Local and Global stations," "High Quality Definition" (oddly phrased, that), and lots of sports (including cricket ).  Furthermore, during the sign-up process, it gives you an option to add "3000 Premium TV channels" for a relatively small additional fee.  Does anyone have any experience with or otherwise know about this service?

Multi-Regional Topics / NCAA Tournament
February 23, 2009, 05:35:32 PM
This is intended to be a central place to discuss the NCAA tournament, both the 2009 version about to begin as well as overriding issues with the tournament itself.

The NCAA has announced that the 2010 and 2011 NCAA tournaments will be hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University and held at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, IL.

As noted on the front page today, this is the 10th anniversary of the conversion of DIII Basketball Online to D3hoops.com, and the beginning of the D3sports.com empire.

Happy Birthday!

I thought this would be a good place to aggregate birthday wishes for Pat and the crew.

I don't know when I first discovered D3hoops.com, but it must have been pretty near to the start.  Since that time, I've gotten countless thousands of hours of enjoyment and edification from this site and its tireless staff.  I'm happy that I now have an opportunity to give some back, in my own small way, to the people and site that have meant so much to me for ten years.  Thanks, Pat and crew, for everything you do for us, and congratulations and best wishes on your tenth anniversary!
