What is a Blueboy?

Illinois College's athletic teams are known by the nickname of Blueboys and Lady Blues. The term "Blueboy" refers to a soldier in the Union Army, a role filled by 240 Illinois College students during the Civil War. The College's rich history includes ties to Abraham Lincoln and the Underground Railroad. The entire senior class of 1863 enlisted in the Civil War and Illinois College recognizes those soldiers who fought and died in the war by using the "Blueboy" as the school's official mascot.

I remember not having an idea where this nickname came from until we played in IC's gym and they had a huge picture of a Civil War soldier on the wall. (Along with a sign which said that Illinois College was the oldest college in the state of Illinois. :o)

I've got a question regarding IC and MacMurray being in the same conference. Is/can a school get admitted into a conference by the simple majority of conference presidents or can one school veto another one from getting in? It seems as though Illinois College is an awfully long way from most other schools in the Midwest Conference, but besides the SLIAC, where would they go? The NACC? (I'm fascinated by how and why schools end up in the conferences that they are.)

I'm not going to pretend I know the geographics of the MWC, but I can't imagine trips to Lakeland University in Plymouth, Marian in Fond du Lac and Edgewood in Madison would be enjoyable rides for the Blue Boys if they were to jump to the NACC...and another trip to DePere, WI, St. in the future.

I don't think any of the NACC full members are within 200 miles of Illinois College, though Eureka is for football (MacMurray, which is in the same town, was a member of the football only IBFC with several current NACC schools.)

I'm guessing [SNC] can hang on to their upcoming NC schedule, which is set through 2021 (NACC plays 7 conf games a year, or has in the past). I will miss some of the MWC rivalries but the local ones haven't been competitive for years.

The NACC has actually only ever had 7 or 8 teams for football until now. I'd guess it will add an 8th conference game, assuming existing scheduling agreements permit it.

St. Norbert moving to the NACC beginning in 2020-21. Should be a shift in power at the top of league I would imagine.

I agree. It seems to me that NACC football is divided into the "usually pretty decent", "usually meh", and "usually not very good" levels, but there are often some surprises in that someone's often finishing surprisingly high and someone's finishing surprisingly low. Sticking St. Norbert into the league seems to either add a team that will be in the "usually pretty decent" group, or create a new level - "expected to win the league unless something surprising happens".

Does this make any sense?

Sounds about right. SNC played Aurora (5-2 in NACC) last season and while the final was 16-7, stats suggest SNC was in total control. They'll play the second part of that series to open 2019 season.

What is Benedictine's status as a NACC member going forward?

St. Norbert also lost to Benedictine in both 2016 and 2017. But that said, the Green Knights don't seem to really have "down years" like...well, every other team in this conference. Good news is that De Pere is a pretty easy drive from Sheboygan. ;D

In some coaching news, Benedictine hired Jim Schroeder away from Rockford to be their new head coach - he had been the Eagles' defensive coordinator for ten years prior to taking RU's top job. The Regents then elevated their defensive coordinator, J.T. Zimmerman, to head coach.

NACC Tournament First Round
#6 Edgewood 70
#3 Aurora 73

#5 Rockford 68
#4 Illinois Tech 75

So the semifinals on Saturday will pit CUW vs. Aurora at 3:30pm, followed by MSOE hosting IIT at 5:45.
#35
NACC Tournament First Round
#6 MSOE 46
#3 Concordia Wisconsin 57

#5 Aurora 35
#4 Dominican 55

So it will be Lakeland vs. CUW and then WLC vs. Dominican in the semifinals on Friday. Each higher seed won both regular season meetings over their respective opponents, though both LU-CUW games went to OT while the Warriors' wins over the Stars were far more decisive.

Benedictine head coach Brad McCaslin has resigned to rejoin Lance Leopold's staff at the University of Buffalo, where he will coach DTs.

Congratulations to MSOE and Concordia Wisconsin who share the NACC regular season championship at 16-4! The Raiders get the No. 1 seed on tiebreakers, and will host the conference tournament final four over the weekend, hoping to follow up their first regular season title in 37 years with what would be their first ever NCAA Tournament berth.

First Round - Wednesday, 7:00pm
#6 Edgewood (10-10) at #3 Aurora (12-8)
#5 Rockford (11-9) at #4 Illinois Tech (11-9)

Semifinals - Saturday at MSOE
#2 Concordia Wisconsin (16-4) vs. higher seeded winner, 3:30pm
Lower seeded winner at #1 MSOE (16-4), 5:45pm

Final: Sunday, 3:00pm at MSOE

Things are starting to shake themselves out in the NACC.

1. (ARV) Wisconsin Lutheran (h) 16-1 (21-1)
2. Benedictine (i) 15-3 (19-4)
3. Lakeland (x) 14-4 (18-5)
3. Concordia Wisconsin (x) 14-4 (16-7)
5. Edgewood 11-7 (14-9)
6. Dominican (x) 11-8 (15-9)
7. MSOE 10-8 (12-11)
7. Aurora 10-8 (10-12)
9. Concordia Chicago (e) 7-11 (7-16)
10. Alverno (e) 5-13 (6-17)
11. Marian (e) 2-16 (2-21)
11. Rockford (e) 2-16 (2-21)
13. Illinois Tech (e) 0-18 (0-22)
(h) Clinched No. 1 seed in NACC Tournament; (x) Clinched NACC Tournament berth; (i) Ineligible for postseason play; (e) Eliminated from NACC Tournament contention

Wisconsin Lutheran is quietly having another outstanding season, only receiving their first top 25 vote in a while this week. With at Rockford, Alverno and Edgewood remaining, they have a magic number of 2 for an outright NACC regular season championship.

Behind them, Lakeland and Concordia Wisconsin will be the No. 2 and 3 seeds. The Muskies have IIT and Alverno at home, while the Falcons finish with Edgewood and at Benedictine. LU also has the tiebreaker.

Dominican clinched a berth with their win over Edgewood last night and their 5-0 head to head record against the other teams in that middle group. A win at Marian would give them the No. 4 seed and a first round home game unless EC wins both of its remaining games.

Edgewood has the toughest remaining schedule - they finish at CUW and then at WLC. One win would clinch a NACC Tournament berth, both would secure the No. 4 seed, but they could still get in even if they don't win either.

Finally, MSOE hosts Aurora on Wednesday in the game of the season for both teams. The tiebreaker possibilities are too numerous to list here, but if they haven't already, the winner can clinch a spot with a win on Saturday (MSOE has Marian at home, while Aurora is at Concordia Chicago), while the loser will need some help to get in.

Couple of big games in the conference title race this weekend, with Benedictine at WLC tonight and Lakeland at CUW tomorrow afternoon. By Saturday night, the Warriors could be firmly in the driver's seat, or it could get real interesting...

It was never going to be North Central after the loss to Lakeland.  UW-Whitewater is no surprise.  Bring em' on--offense do your thing on the ground, defense fight for every inch and get stops--we'll see what happens.

Congrats for making the playoffs in back-to-back years, huge accomplishment!

Wow, kinda quiet here now...

You know,.you're right! We do have things to talk about - namely, the NACC all-conference teams that were released late last week. Congratulations especially to Offensive Player of the Year, Eureka RB Le'Anthony Reasnover (no shock there); Defensive Player of the Year, Lakeland LB Diante Moses; Freshman of the Year, Concordia Chicago WR Eric Hoff; and Coach of the Year Kurt Barth from Eureka.

Reasnover was also named as one of 13 semifinalists for the Gagliardi Trophy, a fitting capstone to a career that saw him finish in the top 10 all time in rushing yards and scoring in Division III.

Week Eleven scores:

Rockford 7
Eureka 38

Lakeland 22
Aurora 25 (OT)

Wisconsin Lutheran 14
Concordia Wisconsin 21

Benedictine 54
Concordia Chicago 41

2018 NACC Standings
1. Eureka 6-1 (9-1)
2. Concordia Wisconsin 5-2 (7-3)
2. Aurora 5-2 (5-5)
4. Lakeland 4-3 (4-6)
5. Benedictine 3-4 (3-7)
6. Rockford 2-5 (3-7)
6. Wisconsin Lutheran 2-5 (2-8)
8. Concordia Chicago 1-6 (2-8)

Best of luck to Eureka in the playoffs! Also a fine season by CUW, improving over last year by five wins as they claimed their first winning season since their NACC title in 2013. (Though we at Lakeland will be needing the Cheese Bowl back next year, thank you very much. ;D)

Will be really interesting to see the all-conference selections at RB. Behind Reasnover and Moise, who should be locks for the first team, you have Bailey from AU, Williams from BU, and Rivers from LU who all had at least 980 yards and 8 TDs apiece (for comparison, 975 and 9 respectively led the league last year) - and barring any ties, one of them will only get honorable mention.

With Aurora's OT victory over Lakeland, Eureka has officially clinched the NACC's automatic berth to the playoffs! They will be headed back to the postseason for the 2nd year in a row, though representing a different conference this time.

(They are well on their way to winning their own game as well, which will give them the outright championship.)

It's finally nice to see RU finally be competitive in the NACC this year for football. That program has come a long way from they had to fight Maranatha (That canned their football program a year or two ago) for their only win. Hopefully they can continue that upward trend.

This is the first time since 2008 they've had multiple conference wins in the same season. And against two teams that will finish above .500 in the league, no less.

Any chance we can institute a new rule where if you beat an RRO as an unranked team, you automatically get their ranking?* ;D

Week Ten scores:

Eureka 55 (5-1, 8-1)
Lakeland 56 (4-2, 4-5)

Concordia Wisconsin 0 (4-2, 6-3)
Rockford 24 (2-4, 3-6)

Aurora 41 (4-2, 4-5)
Benedictine 24 (2-4, 2-7)

Concordia Chicago 27 (1-5, 2-7)
Wisconsin Lutheran 30 (2-4, 2-7)

First things first, Reasnover is every bit as good as advertised - a combination of relentlessness and ability that few can match. I for one won't be shedding a tear that we won't have to face him again. ;D

Big congrats to Lakeland on Senior Day! The defense was... well, Lakeland's defense. But their offense took control of that game, not giving up after falling behind 21-0 with 10:00 left in the 1st quarter. They showed some resiliency and earned that win.

No, the Muskie D didn't make a lot of stops, but they made some key ones - forcing a pair of turnovers in the 1st quarter to stop the game from getting completely out of hand, and eventually getting the ball back for the offense late.

And that's without even going into the other games, like Rockford putting a whooping on CUW and Benedictine now having their most losses in a season since 2005. We may not have the best teams in this conference, but it is never boring in the NACC.

But anyways, there is one week to go, and the automatic playoff berth is still to be decided.

  • Eureka needs a win over Rockford, which would make them the outright champions, OR an Aurora win would give them the head to head tiebreaker whether or not CUW is involved.
  • Concordia Wisconsin needs a win over WLC AND a Eureka Ioss AND a Lakeland win; CUW, EC and LU would all be 1-1 head to head, each also with a loss to RU, so it would go to H2H point differential: Falcons +14, Red Devils +2, Muskies -16.
  • Lakeland needs a win over Aurora AND Eureka and CUW both to lose; that would leave LU and EC tied, and head to head would send a 5-5 team to the playoffs.
