Point wins over the Tommies 78-56. Greg gets paid back for that solitary(good) McMurray pick of last week by being the only St Thomas backer this week. Through 4 games this week only scout is unblemished.

If I'm not mistaken Transylvania has had the belt before.

Transy v Wooster tomorrow.........so the belt will remain in the NCAC for the remainder of the season, or the HCAC with one chance to go outside with a game at Maryville, Tn.

Transy won The BeltTM last year on Jan. 17th when they took it from the Anderson Ravens who only managed to hold onto it for 2 weeks after taking it from Elmhurst.  If Transy gets past Wooster tomorrow and then Defiance on Jan. 6th Anderson could possibly return the favor by knocking off Transy on Jan. 9th Here is a list of The Belt'sTM travels since the start of the 2008-09 season:

Start-Dec. 19 - Washington Univ.
Dec. 20-Jan. 2 - Elmhurst
Jan. 3-Jan. 17 - Anderson
Jan. 17-Feb. 10 - Transylvania
Feb. 11-Feb. 20 - Franklin
Feb. 21-Feb. 26 - Defiance
Feb. 27 - Franklin
Feb. 28-Mar. 5 - Transylvania
Mar. 6-Mar. 19- Guilford
Mar. 20-Dec. 28-Washington Univ.
Dec. 29-Present-Translyvania

KnightSlappy,
I was checking on Plattsburgh State's regional record and I don't think their loss to Elms College should be counted as a regional game. The mileage from the official link that Ralph provided shows the distance from Plattsburgh, N.Y.  to Elms campus in Chicopee, Mass. as 242 miles. Also don't think Plattsburgh's win over Husson University from Bangor Maine should be counted as the mileage chart shows that to be 337 miles.  Both Husson and Elms are in the Northeast region, and are not in the same NCAA administrative region as Plattsburgh St. which is in Region 2 (New York and Pennslyvania). I know that the Plattsburgh team page on D3hoops shows both of these as regional games but I don't see how that's possible. I think Plattsburgh's  regional record should be 6-0. You might want to update your sheet on those 2 games, unless I missed something. I remember last year I thought there was a mistake on a teams regional record and Ralph came on to correct me that even though it was like 350 miles between schools they were in the same administrative region. But I don't see how these 2 games (Elms and Husson) become in-region.

Thanks to KnightSlappy for doing the Pool C statistics. Plus K. One question though, both Oneonta St. and Plattsburgh St. are 7-1 in region, however that 1 loss by Oneonta was to Plattsburgh on Oneonta's home court. Plattsburgh's 1 loss was on the road at Elms. Shouldn't that give Plattsburgh the edge over Oneonta as Plattsburgh won the head to head meeting? Perhaps that doesn't matter. Just asking.

Plattsburgh would also have the Pool A bid because of their win over Oneonta.

In the eyes of the committee? They'll probably be ranked ahead of Oneonta. These are pretty much strictly RPI based rankings, and Oneonta has the edge in that department for now.

As for pool A bids, for now I give them to the top RPI in the conference. Since they're (mostly) given out to conference tournament winners I figure the top RPI team has as good a shot as anyone at winning that bid.

Strict RPI isn't always the best way to rank a region this early in the year (see Calvin's W-L record for proof), but it's still pretty good. I'm sure it'll get better as the season progresses and teams play more and more regional games.

Thanks KS. I can accept that. We all know that what we see now isn't what we'll have by the time tournament selection day rolls around. I'm just happy to see 3 SUNYAC schools in the top 5 in the East. Now that's something I hope doesn't change. But I'm sure after they beat up on each other it will.

Oneonta St. moves to 8-1 with a 78-68 win over Wheaton College(Mass). Red Dragons led by Michael Grimes and Brian Beckford with 18 points each. Grimes grabbed 8 boards and Beckford had 7. Troy Talbot added 17 pts and 6 assists.
Dragons up by 3 at the break and after back & forth action early in the 2nd period grabbed the lead for good with 15:57 to play. Lead was extended to 14 but Wheaton came back to close within 5 with about a minute left. Red Dragons hit 7 of 10 free throws to close out the game.
Oneonta is off until Jan 8th when they resume conference play with a big game at Brockport St.

Oneonta defeats SUNYIT 78-67 at the ECAC Holiday Festival at Disney World in Florida. SUNYIT hits a 3 pointer to open the game and the Red Dragons counter with a 9-0 run and are never headed. Oneonta stretches lead to 15 with 7:39 to play in the 1st half and settle for a 37-25 lead at the break. Wildcats narrow the gap to 6 early in the 2nd half but Red Dragons go on a 16-2 spurt to open up a 20 pt advantage and coast to the win. Four Red dragon players scored in double figures led by Brian Hooks with 18, who hit 6 of 10 from 3 pt. land. Brian Beckford had a double-double with 17 pts and 10 rebounds along with 5 assists. Derek Hahn had 15 pts on 4x7 fg, and 7x9 ft. Mike Grimes added 10 pts and 6 boards.
Oneonta shot 27x55 from the field, 8x18 from behind the arc, and 16x25 from the line.
SUNYIT also placed 4 guys in double digits led by Floyd Thorne who was the game's high scorer with 19 pts. Aaron Swancott had 14, David Golembiowski and Kevin Cappiello chipped in with 11 each.

Oneonta moves to 7-1 on the season and tomorrow will take on Wheaton(Mass) also at Disney World in a 10 AM start.

SUNYIT drops to 6-3 and will face the same Wheaton (Mass) team on Wed. Dec 23rd at 10 AM.

Late-night final from the Left Coast:

North Park 89
Whittier 80

* Nick Williams: 24 pts, 7 rebs
* Nick Hoekstra: 18 pts (4-5 trey), 5 reb
* Shaun Collins: 14 pts (4-7 trey), 5 rebs, 5 asts
* David Williams (?): 14 pts
* Emmanuel Crosby: 10 pts, 6 rebs

I rather doubt that David Williams figured in this game, since he's a freshman whose only varsity minutes came in the second half of the romp over Caltech the other night. Davone Robinson is not listed in the live stats as having played, and I suspect that the live stats operator confused the two Vikings.

Greg,
Season stats for North Park show David Williams with 20 points scored through 10 games which includes the game against Whittier. He scored 2 against Carroll U., 4 against Cal Tech, and the 14 attributed to him for the Whittier game would make 20. Stats also show that Davone Robinson only played in 9 games. I guess it's possible that North Park based their season stats on wrong info from the Whittier box score but that box score does show #11 Williams (which is his correct number) coming off the bench and playing 19 minutes. It also shows the usual 4 starters, for the past 4 games(Avery, Crosby, Russell, and Nick Williams,) with the 5th starter being Nick Hoekstra in place of Davone Robinson, who normally is a starter. The David Williams sighting just might be correct.

David Williams is a classic example of what's called a "filler" at the scorer's table. The game goes incredibly fast for the person who has to key the play-by-play info into the laptop for live stats, and even if he or she has a spotter to assist him or her, it's nevertheless not always possible to stay on top of who is in the game and who isn't. Believe me, anyone who works at a scorer's table will tell you that that's no indictment of the live stats operator. It's hard work.

When an unknown player is in the game, or there is some sort of discrepancy in the live stats PBP, the operator will often pick a player who isn't likely to get into the game (and is thus unlikely to produce stats of his own) and will assign him whatever anomalous statistics (minutes, shots, rebounds, etc.) happen to be present. Last night it occurred in the live stats late in the NPU @ Whittier game, when I was surprised to learn here in Chicago that Sam Schwartz had picked up a rebound for North Park. Sam Schwartz is a freshman with a broken foot who has yet to don a Vikings uniform for anything other than team picture day. At the next timeout, Schwartz's rebound disappeared and was reassigned to another Viking; the live stats operator had had time to catch up during the timeout and correct himself, thereby removing the "filler".

David Williams has borne that role at the scorer's table as a statistical "filler" for NPU in a couple of games this season, including the game against Carroll. Game and season statistics are supposed to be cleaned up later by the SID, which includes removing the fillers (usually by consulting with the coaches, but by examining game tape if necessary); they haven't been cleaned up yet by NPU SID Kevin Shepke. Trust me when I say that he did not see the floor in a varsity game until the Caltech contest last Wednesday, and -- as I said on Wednesday night -- Caltech is so bad that everyone who suited up (including freshmen David Williams and Zach Dungee, who had never before seen varsity action) got into the game.

It's possible that for some as-yet-unknown reason Davone Robinson did not appear at all in last night's game and David Williams did. But it's not consistent with anything that NPU has done this year in terms of who's playing in varsity games and who isn't.

I could understand how a basket in the Carroll game could be mistakenly given to a wrong player but #11 in the Whittier game got a whole bunch of baskets, shots, free throws, rebounds, assists, turnovers, a 3 pointer, a foul and a steal credited to him. That's at least 20 times they made the same mistake. ;D But hey, if you tell me to trust you I'll trust you. Anybody that knows what kind of pudding they served the night the Titanic went down is certainly going to know the lineup for his favorite college hoops team. ;)
