The NCAC is participating in the first of two "NCAC Weekends" at Allegheny this weekend.  All nine squads are in attendance, with each playing twice each of the two days of the event.  This event, as well as a second go-around at Earlham in October, will constitute half of the conference standings.  On Day One, usual suspects Wittenberg and Hiram won both of their matches, as did Wooster and Oberlin.  Wittenberg (7-3) and Wooster (11-2) will square off this afternoon, as will Hiram (7-5) and Oberlin (7-6), along with seven other matches.  This must be a real treat for local volleyball fans; I wish I could be there.

Hiram and Wittenberg showed the NCAC who's the boss(es) today as each cruised to twin 3-0 victories to finish the NCAC Weekend 4-0.  Wittenberg, which didn't lose a game at the meet, dropped Wooster and Kenyon this afternoon, while Hiram dumped the Scots and Oberlin.  The Tigers and Terriers start the conference season atop the standings at 4-0, one game ahead of host Allegheny, whose three-set victories today over Kenyon and OWU leave them at 3-1.  Wooster and Oberlin followed up impressive 2-0 Saturdays with bleak 0-2 Sundays and join Denison (2-0 today) in fourth at 2-2.  Earlham won once, over OWU, while the Bishops and Kenyon came away with 0-4 records from the event.

Hope swept Calvin for the MIAA lead in front of 1,425 fans yesterday. Man, just over 600 at Oshkosh vs. Whitewater was noteworthy for us, but 1,425? What a rivalry. Like usual, what great support over in Michigan. And it's not like admission is free either. Very cool.

Wittenberg and Hiram continue to dominate the NCAC, and when the two squads met this past Saturday, the Tigers came out on top in five sets, 25-27, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 15-12 (http://www4.wittenberg.edu/news/athletics/volleyball/gamestories/09gamestories/oct10.html).  Those two sets won by the Terriers were the first an NCAC opponent has taken from the Tigers in nearly two years (10/24/07, vs. Earlham), but Witt held on to record their 58th straight conference victory.  That streak is now up to 60 with wins at Oberlin and Denison.  Wittenberg (14-3, 10-0) has a chance to break their own conference record winning streak of 63 matches this weekend at the second of two "Power Weekend" events, this one to be held at Earlham.  Standing squarely in the way is a rematch with second place Hiram (14-8, 7-1), as the two are scheduled to face off Saturday afternoon in Richmond.

#8 Wittenberg puts the hammerlock on the NCAC title (again) by whitewashing Hiram, 26-24, 25-12, 25-18 (http://www4.wittenberg.edu/news/athletics/volleyball/gamestories/09gamestories/oct17.html).  Hiram had been extended by lowly Earlham earlier in the day, squeaking past the hosts by the nailbiting scores of 25-22, 27-25, 25-19 (http://news.hiram.edu/?p=4704), and evidently just couldn't muster the energy to challenge the dominant Tigers.  Wittenberg, which later in the afternoon dispatched Allegheny in straight sets, is now 12-0 in conference action, two games (loss column) ahead of the Terriers.  Wittenberg faces Denison and Oberlin tomorrow, and two more wins would guarantee at least a share of the conference title, which would be their 12th in 13 years.

Complete standings after Day 1 of the Power Weekend:
Wittenberg 12-0, 16-3
Hiram 8-2, 15-9
Wooster 8-3, 17-6
Allegheny 6-5, 12-13
Denison 5-5, 6-18
Oberlin 4-6, 11-13
Earlham 2-8, 4-20
Kenyon 1-9, 4-21
Ohio Wesleyan 1-9, 1-23 (congratulations to the Bishops, who beat Denison today 14-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16, 15-10 to get off the schneid)

Heidelberg won that matchup, 3-2 with a 15-10 win in set 5.  Wittenberg rebounded to drop ninth-ranked Carthage 3-1, and Carthage then turned around and whitewashed the host Student Princes 3-0.  All three ranked squads dismissed Webster, leaving them all with 2-1 records for the quad meet.  However, Heidelberg benefited by having their big win be in-region, as opposed to Wittenberg's (and Carthage's, a Midwest region team.)

Heidelberg link (http://www.heidelberg.edu/athletics/teams/wvolleyball/2009quad)

Returning to conference action this evening, Wittenberg polished off Ohio Wesleyan in straight sets to complete their 16-0 run through the NCAC.  The win was their 65th straight in regular season NCAC play, a conference record.  This weekend, the eighth-ranked Tigers head to San Antonio for another non-conference tournament hosted by the 18th-ranked Trinity Tigers which will also feature the top two teams in the current AVCA poll, #1  Juniata and #2 UW-Oshkosh.

It was well worth attending. The atmosphere was electric, the fans were pumped, and VandeStreek made sure he had his entire basetball team in the very front row in what ultimately proved to be a vain attempt to intimidate the ladies from Hope. Alas, Hope's women were stout on the frontline, showed great discipline and repeatedly denied Calvin at the net. Rebecca Kamps' back-to-back kills in game 3 raised the roof but after three close and exciting games, Hope ran away and hid from Calvin in the last two. Only Calvin's rather comfortable 2-0 win on the soccer pitch earlier the same day could assuage bruised Knight feelings.

If you couldn't guess, the crowd set a D-III single-match record.

Wittenberg has seven (well, five) close sets against the top two teams in the nation, but wins just one of them, dropping decisions to #2 Oshkosh 25-21, 25-16, 26-24 and #1 Juniata 25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 25-19.  Oshkosh upended Juniata in their head-to-head matchup 22-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 15-13; must have been a thriller.  Both teams blanked host Trinity, who came back to nip Witt 3-2 (15-11) in the nightcap, leaving the Ohio Tigers 0-3 on the weekend.

The Tigers' next task is to defend their NCAC tournament title, where they will be (of course) the top seed.  Hiram wrapped up the second position with a five-set 15-10 victory at third-place Wooster this afternoon.  Allegheny grabbed the fourth seed and the unenviable task of facing Witt in the first round of the tourney, to be held Friday and Saturday at the HPER Center.

#1 seed Bluffton wins the HCAC AQ bid, beating #2 seed Mt. St. Joseph 3-2 (22-25, 13-25, 26-24, 25-18, 15-12).

This ends a dynasty in HCAC volleyball: MSJ had won the regular season title outright 9 times in the past 11 seasons (since joining the HCAC), shared the title in 2007, and won the tournament over #1 seed Franklin in 2002, the only season in which they did not have at least a share of the title.

Congrats to Rebecca Kamp for being named D3VB national player of the week after Calvin's 4-0 weekend at the Great Lakes Regional Challenge. The notice reads in part "For the year, Kamp is hitting an astounding .435 while averaging 4.09 kills and 1.41 blocks per set."

I wish I could have seen the Calvin-Wittenberg match -- it sounds like it was a match for the ages!

Massey came out with volleyball ratings for DIII teams, and the Great Lakes region has the top three spots and four of the top seven:

1. Calvin
2. Wittenberg
3. Heidelberg
4. Juniata
5. St Thomas
6. Emory
7. Hope
8. Cal Lutheran
9. Christopher Newport
10. Puget Sound

Other teams of interest:
11. Washington MO
23. Carthage
26. Chicago
29. Alma
33. Wooster
35. Mt Union
45. Capital

Don't put too much stock in these ratings yet because lots of matches are missing for some teams (only two for Juniata?) -- still interesting to see Calvin, Wittenberg, and Heidelberg topping the charts and Hope at #7, though.

Big match tomorrow between Calvin and Hope.

Yesterday's Calvin-Hope volleyball match was seen by 2212 people -- tied for 11th largest attendance in the history of DIII volleyball. Curiously, the match this one tied was a November 6, 2010 match between...Calvin and Hope.

Calvin shows up in four of the top 10, usually with Hope. The third largest attendance ever was 3,275 when UC San Diego played with Calvin here in Grand Rapids for the DIII NCAA final, when now-coach Amber Warners was playing.

I'd be curious how exactly they take attendance at volleyball games since it is not a ticketed event.  It seems fishy that Calvin is reporting the exact same # as last year's game.  Usually (i.e. non Hope games) it seems like they simply report an estimate.

Either way, it's awesome to get a great crowd for volleyball.  This is a special Calvin squad and they are very fun to watch this year.  The student section has been more full for volleyball this year than for some men's basketball games in recent years.  Go Knights!

The Calvin Knights are now 11-0 in the MIAA (19-0 overall). Haven't dropped a set in conference play yet, they're 33-0 (57-6 in sets overall).

With Wash U's recent loss to Emory, it looks as though Calvin may be the only undefeated volleyball team remaining in DIII, with only MIAA games remaining before the NCAA tournament.

Here's Massey's latest ranking of volleyball teams:
1. Calvin
2. Wash U
3. Emory
4. Wittenberg
5. Heidelberg
6. Carthage
...
11. Otterbein
12. Hope
13. Elmhurst

Kenneth Massey's ratings has Calvin as the 170th best college volleyball team in the nation (before the win against Hope). For some context, there are 327 Division I teams. Here are some of Calvin's neighbors in the rankings:

168. Indiana -- DI
169. Pittsburgh -- DI
170. Calvin
171. Towson -- DI
172. Army -- DI

Looks like 145 D1, 22 D2, and 3 NAIA teams are ranked ahead of the Knights. Not bad.

Calvin will host a Thurs-Sat regional:

Heidelberg
Geneva
--
Rose-Hulman
Wittenberg
--
Otterbein
Hope
--
Calvin
St. Norbert

Calvin played Hope (3x), Heidelberg, Otterbein, and Wittenberg in the regular season with a 6-0 record (taking 18 out of 23 sets).

Not to knock St. Norbert, but for the second year in a row the entrant from the Midwest Conference gets the toughest draw in their region. (Last year, if memory serves correct, MWC champ Beloit ended up playing Wash-MO).

Otterbein/Hope (at least on paper) looks like the match most likely to go 5 imho.
