Off Pitch

10/13/2018 Preview

WPI @ Coast Guard:   Paul Beatty, the Engineer's leading returning scorer, has appeared in the last two games after missing most of the season to date. WPI has won 4 games this season by a 1-0 score.  Coast Guard stated the year 1-5-2, but is 3-1-1 in their last five games giving up only 2 goals in that stretch.  They have lost 4 games by 1-0.   Prediction:  WPI 1 - Coast Guard 0 (of course)

MIT @ Clark:  MIT is winless in conference play and is 0-4-1 in their last 5 games away from home.  Clark started the year 7-0-0 but is only 2-3-1 in their last 6 games and they have only scored a single goal in their last 3 conference games.  Junior Sean Munroe and Freshman Connor Ross have each scored 9 goals for the Cougars.  Prediction:  Clark 1 - MIT 0  in OT

Springfield @ Emerson:  Springfield sits atop the conference standings and has run off four straight wins. The Pride has beaten Emerson by a cumulative 24-0 score in the last 5 matches.   Emerson has not beaten or tied any team with a winning record and has scored only one goal in conference play.  Prediction:  Springfield 2 - Emerson 0

Babson @ Wheaton:  Babson's GAA in conference play (GK Heintzelman) is only 0.45 and senior Noah Parker has netted 3 goals in the last 3 games.  The Beavers have won 6 of the last 7 games played on Lyon turf.  Wheaton is 2-5-0 in their last seven games but is coming off a big win at Wesleyan.    Prediction:  Babson 2 - Wheaton 1

Off Pitch, once again spot on picking of all four winners yesterday. And while you didn't pick any final scores exactly, I did notice that you picked the correct margin of victory in 3 out of 4 games.
Well done! I expected a better showing from MIT, especially coming off a solid 3-0 win over Bridgewater st. on Wednesday. A couple of big matchups next Saturday when Springfield hosts WPI and Clark hosts Babson.  Definitely looking forward to those games. Those results should go a long way in sorting out the seedings for the post season conference tournament.

10/19/18 preview

Coast Guard @ MIT:  A must win for both teams - a NEWMAC 6 vs 8 game when only 5 qualify teams qualify for the conference tournament.  Goals will be at  a premium as these teams combined have only 7 goals in 10 conference games.  The Bears are 1-4-2 away from home and are scoreless in 3 of their last 4 road games.  The Engineers are formidable (4-1-1) on home turf  (vs. 1-5-1 away) with 5 shutouts in those 6 home contests.  You have to go back to 2013 for that last time either team scored more than 1 goal against the other.    Prediction:  MIT  1 - Coast Guard 0

10/20/18 preview

Babson @ Clark:  Babson is coming off a nice 3-0 win over EConnST, and senior Noah Parker has scored 5 goals in the last 5 games.  The Beavers have the conference's stingiest defense having allowed only 2 goals in conference play and 8 on the season.  Clark is only 3-3-2 in their last 8 outings but is coming off a strong comeback performance to tie Brandeis 2-2.  Prediction:  Babson 2 - Clark 1

WPI @ Springfield:  The Pride enter the game in first place in the conference and WPI is tied with Babson for second.  Springfield has won 6 straight and 8 of their last 9 (only loss in this stretch was to Babson).  WPI has won five in a row and is an impressive 6-0 on the road this season.  This game could decide the regular season title.   Prediction:  Springfield 1 - WPI 1

Wheaton @ Emerson:  Wheaton can clinch a NEWMAC tournament slot with a win and a Coast Guard loss.  The Lyons are only 3-6 in their last 9 games, but two of those wins came against Wesleyan and Clark on the road.  Emerson is winless in their last 5 games having been outscored 9-1 in that stretch.  Prediction:  Wheaton 2 - Emerson 0

Futball

Once again Off Pitch predicts the win/loss/tie results. Suprised that Coast Guard gave up three goals to MIT.  A Clark loss to WPI and a likely MIT win against Emerson puts MIT into the fifth place spot. Interested to see Off Pitch predictions for the last Saturday of conference play.

Good pickup on Clark's predicament in the NEWMAC this Saturday. Two weeks ago who saw that coming with Clark possibly on the outside looking in at the conference tourney.
Babson had a very good week beating ECONN St. & Clark.  I think Babson has a good chance to jump over a few teams in the regional rankings (Springfield, Endicott and RWU).
Certainly the Beavers SOS should improve.

Mr.Right

WPI has a ton to play for in their final game v Clark. Regional Rankings and Newmac seeding so I expect a full effort against Clark. That being said Clark has enough talent to somehow find a draw to get the 5th seed. MIT has picked it up recently and should beat Emerson but MIT has shown the past few years under this Head Coach to not get results against teams they should beat. Point----It looks on paper that MIT should beat Emerson and WPI should beat Clark but 50/50 those two results do not happen. That is why when you put yourself in a position at the end of a season to have to rely on other teams getting results everything goes out the window.

10/26/18 Preview

Emerson @ MIT:   MIT has a chance to qualify for the conference tournament with a win over Emerson coupled with a Clark loss at WPI tomorrow.  The Engineers are 5-1-1 at home having outscored visitors 14-2 and notching 6 shutouts.  The Lions are 1-4 on the road and have scored only 3 goals in 6 conference games.   Prediction:  MIT 2 - Emerson 0

The Coast Guard @ Babson game originally scheduled for tomorrow has been rescheduled for Sunday at noon.  This is probably a wise move on Babson's part as Coast Guard trains extensively for action in very wet and windy conditions.

Also, Babson has been playing exclusively on their turf field for the last month.  The grass field did look awful in September when they hosted Springfield.  Have they shut it down for the year?  If so, will this interfere with their ability to host the conference tournament as the Babson Field Hockey team will likely also be hosting games Nov 3?

Off Pitch

10/27/18 preview (nor'easter edition)

Clark @ WPI:  Clark advances to the conference tournament with a win or tie.  WPI wins the conference regular season championship with a win and help (Springfield and Babson must both not win).  Clark started the season with 7 straight wins against weak competition but came back to reality going 3-4-2 once the opposition got tougher.  During that stretch they are 0-2-2 away from home.  WPI has only surrendered 9 goals on the year and is undefeated in conference play (3-0-3).    Prediction:  WPI 1 - Clark 0   in  OT

Wheaton @ Springfield:  Both teams are in the conference tournament, and Springfield can still claim the regular season championship with a win combined with a Babson tie or loss.  Wheaton has won 4 of their last 5 including two wins over NESCAC foes Wesleyan and Trinity.  Springfield stumbles into this game with a loss to Endicott and a tie with WPI in their last two outings.  The Pride may not play the ball in the air quite as much as last year, but weather conditions Saturday will make things interesting.   Prediction:  Springfield 2 - Wheaton 1

Mr.Right

MIT has a heartbeat as WPI goes up on Clark 1-0 early in the 2nd Half. Clark which only needed a Draw in this match came out and played WPI straight up from what I have seen but they probably should have parked the bus and gotten into the 4/5 game in Newmac Playoffs. Still a ton of time left though an after seeing Clark score 2 late goals at Brandeis a couple weeks ago I would not count them out just yet.

Mr.Right

WPI defeats Clark 1-0 as they were all over Clark 2nd Half and unless Clark gets an ECAC bid their season is finished. They started strong and really tailed off at the end as they had defeated MIT 4-1 earlier in the year but MIT gets the #5 seed. They will travel to Wheaton midweek which will be no easy task as Wheaton has been playing very well lately. They have Springfield 1-1 in OT right now.

Futball

Over the last three years, Coach O'Toole has turned the Clark program around but IMO they need to beef up there out of conference schedule so they are better prepared for NEWMAC. Too many close losses in conference play.

Well done, Off Pitch!  With Springfield's 2-1 OT victory over Wheaton, you called both winners and scores to perfection.  You've got a great handle on the league.

Mr.Right

O'Toole is a solid Coach but he needs to somehow get a stud or two to commit because Clark can be a very tough school to recruit to. Clark used to be a regional power in Men's Soccer in the 1980's but have not Won consistently in over 30 years. In the 80's they used to play all the top D3 programs in New England including most of Nescac and even some top schools inthe country like Wheaton(IL) etc but the program has dropped off since the early 90's.

Futball

One could argue that his recruiting has been pretty solid since 2016. In 2015 they were 6-10-1. Since 2016 they have not had a losing record and are 33-16-6.  Not sure what injuries they had but they faded late in the season. as the opposition became tougher. Challenging the team with a Gordon, Endicott or NESCAC team early in the season will be a good read on what the team will need to work on for tough NEWMAC play.

Mr.Right

Agreed but Clark has not played a Nescac in years and they are geographically close to any of the 3 Connecticut schools, Wlliams, Amherst and Tufts. They used to play every Nescac besides Colby, Midd and Hamilton so it would be very possible. I know they had a new AD 3 years ago that did not hire O'Toole and it was rumored in 2016 that he was in trouble because the AD was a Soccer guy and Clark had some really tough years so maybe he wants to pad the Wins...Who knows
