Harper goes to the Nats with the first pick in the 2010 draft.  Looks like I'll get a chance to see him play.

MLB First-Year Player Draft begins on Monday.  Who will be the first D3 player taken?

Tough way to go out, guys, but of the 55 best teams in the country, 54 end their season on the losing side.  We're really proud of all of you.  You have a season to remember.

I agree with you that Lewis is probably the better pitcher.  I live in Cedar Rapids and have seen both of them pitch on multiple occassions.  My main point was to show how decieving a win-loss record can be.  I know numbers are just numebrs, but numbers get you AA status.  Sure, there will always be that pitcher that doesn't have great stats but has great potential and gets drafted but that doesn't mean jsut because you get drafted, that you should be an AA.

Macalester's James Murrey is a great example of this. He was 9-4 on a terrible team and did nothing but shut down opponents all season and his own hitters could not score runs for him. He may have actually been better than d3 pitcher of the year, Matt Schuld.

Murrey was head and shoulders above any other pitcher that Hopkins faced this year.

Brian Youchak and Dave Kahn are roommates.  They're a couple of really classy kids who can play some baseball.  Kahn is the d3baseball.com POTY and Youchak is the ABCA POTY; they were rooting for one another through the whole process.  Way to go, guys.  We couldn't be prouder of you.

Congrats to the All-American selections.  Can you imagine how difficult it is to select these players with all the great performances throughout the year?  One shocker is an old player of mine, Alex Eliopoulos.  He went 10-0 for Johns Hopkins, 2.17 ERA, was the Region MVP, and didn't even get a sniff.  Bummer for him but there were some crazy good performances this year.

Watch Shenandoah this year.  One thru six, they absolutely kill the baseball.  Brashears and Van Sickler are the bash brothers.  They might just out hit everyone and win it on offense.

Alex is a workhorse.  The top three starters for Hopkins, however, had a combined W-L of 29-0, a combined ERA of 2.45 (Alex's 2.78 was third best), a 3:1 K:BB ratio, a .216 OBA, and they allowed only 7 home runs in 791 innings despite playing in a small home park.  Alex led the team in innings (74.1) and strikeouts (83).  Any of the three could reasonably have shown up on the All-American team, and they'll be a force to be reckoned with in Appleton.  Alex will most certainly get his share of individual awards through the CWS and the next two years at Hopkins.

Kudos to the d3baseball.com All-Americans, and to the Hopkins players with AA credentials who didn't get selected.  That's the problem with being on a team with so many incredibly talented players when comes time for individual recognition which, politically, has to be spread around.  I can't get to Appleton, guys, but be assured that I'll be yelling, "Work hard out there!" at my computer screen.

That link provided a trip down memory lane. I didn't follow JHU in their regional this year.  Did they mow down the competition?

It took the Blue Jays two games to beat Kean, but they won four games quite handily.

Congratulations to the 13 JHU Bluejays who graduated this afternoon.  Way to go, guys!!

Well solid NY Regional and the best team appears to have won it.  As for the World Series... I think Hopkins is going to win it.  I think they're hands down better than every team left.  That being said anything can happened in baseball.  They're so deep so.  Seems they have two studs that can play every position.  Shenandoah can also swing it but if both teams win JHU and Shenandoah will face off in round 2.  I think Cortland can make some noise as well but I do think JHU and Shenandoah are both better. We'll find out!

A very close friend of mine is a JHU baseball alum that is still very close to the team.  I talked with him recently and he said their lineup was stacked.  Like multiple players with more than 10 homers stacked.  As for pitching they have 2 studs, both are sophmores but i think the rest of their staff is good but not great.  Oh, and a closer that is getting looked at.  He didn't say anything about their D.

So thats my mini-scouting report.  They do sound very deep and like they'll bee hard to beat.  I think cortland may be able to give them a run for their money but they'll need to bring their A game to do it.   Cortland is a solid team and i wouldn't be surprised if they won it all but i agree JHU has to be the favorite going into it.

I just hope one of those teams wins it.  JHU for my buddy or Cortland to represent the SUNYAC.

Good hitting assessment.  Actually, the two sophomore starters got a little help from Senior Greg Harbeck.

Player                 era   w-l     app-gs    ip     bb    so     2b   3b  hr   b/avg
Greg Harbeck      2.07     8-0     10-10    65.1   16    49     5     2    1    .227
Sam Eagleson      2.45     11-0     13-1      73.1    22    54    8     1    5    .207
Alex Eliopoulos      2.78     10-0     13-11    74.1    22    83    9     0    1    .216
Andrew Pevsner      2.88     3-0     19-0      34.1    18    39    3     0    2    .180

Slight correction to John Hopkins pitcher's stats:

Sam Eagleson's 11-0 record should read 13 appearances with 10 starts.

Yes, indeed.  I fixed it.

Congrats, Blue Jays.  Good Luck in Appleton!
