Hobart schedule released today.  Some nice OOC games, away at Randolph Macon, then home against Moravian.  Going to be nice to see teams from conferences other than the E8.

Sorry for the Union fans that Poppe ended up being a carpetbagger and has moved on.Obviously it is a good move for him, and might have been predicted based on his Columbia and Ivy experience. I'm not sure Poppe did anything but use Behrman's recruits and let them play. He also got Ice Bear all  excited about his infectious enthusiasm and passion.Columbia is where college coaches go to die, even Poppe won't change that(they last won a Championship 62 years ago). I'd love to see if there is a Union grad out there that has the experience to take over the program that will really live the family talk.Union football tradition needs a great coach that will bleed Garnet red.

Great point about Columbia, B-man. Fantastic school, good kids, deep pockets.  However, terrible location, miserable history, mediocre fanbase, near zero chance of winning record (in the league)

Well now tht the LL season is over, lets hit some controversial topics.  What is the general feeling about the transfer portal?  Seems like several Statesmen have posted their farewell to D3 in hopes of hitting the bigtime in D2 - FCS world.

Great win for this year's Hobart seniors.  The LL lives up to its rep as one of the toughest conferences in the country.

Working on a chaos scnario.  Hobart beats RPI, then RPI beats Union.  3  8-2 LL teams.  Then we are back to only one LL team.  Same as every year...

Very late to the party here but busy weekend for ICAlum as my sister got married on Saturday in Hobartville (Geneva... beautiful place for a wedding if I might add).

I didn't get to watch much of the IC game because of ceremonies but did shell out the $6 to watch some of the first half (interesting strategy from Rochester but a discussion for the offseason). I forget who said it over the weekend but I believe they were correct about getting the new QB comfortable throwing early in the game. As a freshman that is a tough spot so he will only get more comfortable and it looks like has a strong arm so stretching the ball vertically to Deumaga hopefully becomes more of a part of the game plan. That IC defense is elite and JLO is a bonafied stud. He should be LL OPOY and I think should be a serious AA candidate.

Credit to Rochester for playing tough and that program is building. The LL continues to be the toughest league in the northeast and excited for future matchups. Hopefully the next two weeks the Bombers are able to build a lead and get the QB some confidence throwing the ball heading into Cortaca and the playoffs.

I do have a question for the Hobart fans here, what seems to be the issue with the Statesmen? Since 2014 when I lost to them in the first round of the playoffs, they seem to have really fallen off and not been able to beat the upper tier teams in the region. Is this an issue with DeWall? I am curious to hear the thoughts of the fans on the last few years of struggles getting over the hump.
I guess both Union and RPI are not upper tier teams .....we only just beat them both last year(oops edit we beat RPI 2 years ago and lost to them at RPI by 3 last year), and have a good track record with the historic LL members over the last 10 years. While we do have issues beating Ithaca at Buttercup Field,, it's comments like this that make me wish we voted in St.John Fisher or Alfred as full LL members that would have been more grateful for escaping the E8. There, I have it off my chest and feel totally fine now.
It is true that before Coach Cragg( Cragg was a kick ass take no prisoners type) resigned as HC to head up the Athletic  department development staff and Coach DeWall(a total gentleman and Hobart grad) took over we have not won a LL title, but the record is not too shabby. We compete with a pure Liberal Arts curriculum, that I believe hurts us in recruiting these days ( Business seems to be a favorite major for male athletes, and Hobart  offers Economics) We have added an Entrepreneurship/ Management Major and Masters program, that seems to have helped the more career focused generation, instead of mine that would have studied anything to stay out of the draft and risked being killed in the jungles of Viet Nam.
See you next year at the Boz where we will try to snap the ball better and not give you the game ;D

I certainly didn't want my questions about the Hobart D front to intimate that they aren't still a top tier team in D3, just felt like the Defensive scheme was a little one dimensional for the power offenses of the LL.  The staff does a great job recruiting and putting bigtime athletes all over the field.  Being  a small liberal arts college certainly is a disadvantage when comparing to bigger schools (doesn't Ithaca have close to 7000 students? Hobart is around 2400).

I am looking for an honest, objective answer from some of the great football minds of the LL board (looking at you Johnny U, Mach, BartM, IC 79...).  What is your opinion of the 3 man front that Hobart has trotted out for every game I have watched in the past 7 years? I will happily share my opinion after hearing from some of the more learned members of the group.

Interesting I never thought about it but it is an odd defense that you don't see often.  I mean they are a good team and their defense has had some studs and to be honest I never thought much of the scheme they run.  I'm guessing they aren't able to recruit 275+ pound studs (or don't want to) so they have 6 linebacker type players instead?  I'd have to watch them more to give a better opinion but they do run that wide 3 man front versus the spread.  Not sure what they would do vs a team that runs 21/22 personnel groups.

Its all I have ever seen.  The Hobart LBs have amazing stats year after year. They conistently lead the team in sacks and TFLs.  The defense has had great seasons overall.  I have watched thousands of NCAA and NFL games over the years, I just cant remember a team that is so dedicated to the 3-4 look.  It seems that the B gap (if that what off guard is still called) is open for 2-3 yards every play, and then with a solid block on the LB it is 6 yards...every play.  I am certainly no Defensive guru, just an avid fan, and am perplexed  with this scheme week after week.

NIL money and the transfer portal have created a fascinating crossroads for big time college football.  Would the University of CO actually be a contender without these new rules? In one way it is great for athletes (I refuse to us the term student-athletes anymore) who generate millions of dollars for their school, and respective conference, to tap into that lucrative revunue stream.  In another way, are we just going to generate even younger, wealthy athletes with misguided outlooks of the real world.  Regarding D3, the last bastion of the student athlete, I doubt anything changes for 99.2% of schools.
