https://athletics.hamilton.edu/news/2021/10/3/football-teams-cairns-22-is-nescac-defensive-player-of-the-week.aspx

Mike Cairns is the older brother of Joe Cairns, Hamilton '25, who threw for 3 TD's in the Cont's win at Colby. The Cairns family accounted for all 4 Hamilton TD's on Saturday. That's some good recruiting of "local" talent. The Hamilton players most certainly had ample time to work on their Senior Theses on that ride back to Clinton, but I'm not sure that many exercised that option. Far be it for me to temper anyone's enthusiasm, but it may be the time to pump the brakes on an immediate pigskin renaissance in Waterville. We all know what a painstakingly incremental process a rebuild can be. I do hope that early season results mean that the league is getting more competitive. Though I have rooting interests, I just really want to be entertained.

The incredible, one handed TD reception was #2 on Randy Moss' "You Got Mossed" highlight feature on the Monday Night Football pre-game show. Great PR `for the NESCAC!

If you want to know how weak this slate really is, I looked up Bates and Middlebury's all-time head-to-head because I had this incorrect memory that Bates always played Middlebury close, most likely of the 35-34 Midd win in 2018. The results surprised me so I also looked up the all time head-to-heads of Amherst/Colby, Bowdoin/Trinity, and Wesleyan/Hamilton.

Since 1998 (farthest the archives could go), Amherst, Middlebury, Trinity, and Wesleyan are a combined 70-1 against Colby, Bates, Bowdoin, and Hamilton.

Hamilton hasn't had much success since the early 1990's, but they have beaten Wesleyan twice since 2010, and they beat Amherst as recently as 2019.

The 2021 HAM squad is not on the same level as the Kenny Gray/Joe Schmidt led teams based on what we saw last Saturday...we realize it is only one week but Gray could sling it with the best of them and always gave HAM a shot at a win against anyone...

In a related story, new QB, Junior Nigel Scott, no longer appears on the Hamilton football roster...not sure what that means...did he quit? was he suspended? is he injured (usually injured players names stay on the roster)? is this Hamilton gamesmanship? Another SID snafu (would not surprise us)? We'll keep our eyes on this developing story but if he is indeed no longer on the team, it is certainly never a good thing to lose your starting QB after one game....especially the case since it appeared to us that HCOF Murray put in whole new RPO package to take advantage of his new QBs running abilities...stay tuned...

Unfortunately, I can confirm the QB scoop.Scott was told that the frosh QB would start this week, as he's a better passer. Scott quit on the spot . Who does that? I agree that the Conts don't have the skill position sizzle of Gray/Schmidt teams. They got strong games from 2 frosh RB's last week, and Park may be back soon. They have a good from 7 and the back end played well with the exception of the Bowdoin bomb that was called back. This week is a major step up. Btw, Schmidt is using his final year of eligibility at FCS Wagner in his old neighborhood.

This doesn't seem terribly unreasonable, especially given where we've been. It also has a hint of optimism that we can do away with restrictions if numbers improve.

Rosters will be essentially limitless this year. (2021). A limit will probably be discussed and agreed upon for new limits, likely 85, according to my NESCAC source.

I spoke with an athletic administrator at a NESCAC member school this morning. There is much work to be done in order to have a spring sports season. If things continue to move in the right direction, we should have a "normal" fall season, though some restrictions may be in place, according to my friend. (Not an imaginary friend! Lol)

Coach Cosgrove just announced via email that Colby will be pursuing in state game opportunities in the fall for the team. I think this is great news for the kids, especially the seniors. I hope it works.

Oh good! We're all looking forward to an enlightened, nuanced critique of Colby's offensive performance this autumn.

It's good to see that some aren't interested in eating their young. I'd love to have games to watch, but...........

Hamilton plans.

Not intended to mislead or provide false hope, I'll be checking with my Hamilton sources to see if anything has been determined relative to athletics.
