No doubt the Hope men will be doing some scrimmage against zone defenses this week.

They just need to go back to their game plan from last weekend at Alma. Sheesh

What a great game at Calvin.   The knights played with a lot heart and took down the league leading comets.  Everybody played well.  Seniors Canonie and Wilks left it all out on the court with great play on both ends of the court.  Canonie severly rolled his ankle, had to leave the game for exam and retape, and came back limping but finished with a team leading 36 minutes.  The fans and his teammates appreciated the effort.  Calvin will be very tough next year with all of the returning players.

Hope 85  Albion 77

Fun game at DeVos with both teams displaying high level shooting numbers most of the game.  If it wasn't for the circumstances and blood pressure building moment Calvin lost its lead to Olivet late (thank you iPhones) this game would have been super easy to watch.

If I counted right 1/3 of Albion's missed shots on the day happened in the last 5 minutes of the game when their torrid shooting pace seemed to slow.  This was the ballgame.  I also think Albion went 1 for its last 7 3 point shots after burning the nets all afternoon.

About the only thing to complain about from a Hope perspective is missing the front end of 3 1 for 1's, including 2 late that would have made the final minute or two much easier to swallow.

Hope:  Hawkins 23, Beckman 17, Dreyer 14, Towns 12
Albion:  Parker 18, Armstrong 16, Ebeling 10

Kudos to Arshawn Parker from Albion, for most of the year and his So and Jr years he's been the odd man out of a guard heavy rotation.  18 is a career high for him.

Or did you mean 400, Sac? (# of games before we hope Greg Mitchell retires)

The jury is still out on Mitchell.

Um, no it's not - at least not for anyone who would actually be on that jury or knows basketball.

A pretty remarkably close season I think.

When I walked out of Kresge Gymnasium 3 1/2 weeks ago I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact Hope was probably going to be in a real battle just to squeeze into the MIAA Tournament.

It's a real credit to Hope's coaches and players that they went 6-1 in what I thought was the much more difficult half of their MIAA schedule.  I didn't think that would happen, and there was little evidence to that point that it would.

Things really turned around with Hope's overtime win in Angola.  A barn burning game with a dozen late twists, key plays and clutch shots or more.  That win just really seemed to lift the whole teams spirits and energy and from that day they've really played some pretty good basketball.

Hope's season and team reminded me quite a bit of one from way back in 1999.  Tail end of a pretty good stretch of years, struggled through non-conference (for a different reason then), found its roles about midway through the year.   That Hope team went 3-4 in the first half of the MIAA but won its last 7 games to hold onto a share of the league with Calvin, their 5th in a row.    I think you might find these standings pretty familiar http://miaa.org/sports/mbkb/all-time/mbkb98

19 years was long time ago but that season really stuck out to me as being similar.

The jury is still out on Mitchell.

This isn't necessarily directed at you, just a general comment, people are certainly entitled to their opinion or takes but.....

I'm not sure what people's expectations of Hope or Calvin are anymore, but they seem to be that Hope and Calvin should be able to run roughshod over the league with impunity the way they were perceived to have for a long 30 plus year stretch.  Those days are over.  All it takes is an injury or two, or a recruiting class miss and you will struggle to finish in the top half of this league now.

Fwiw
Mitchell is 81-29  .736 win % overall,  46-10  .821 win % in conference with 2 outright championships and a co-championship.

Coach Ernst with some uhhh... interesting comments on Twitter

A lot of leagues will suspend coaches for insinuating such a thing publicly.
